Isaiah Evans

I think it’s still way too early in the season to say KK is a better playmaker than Evans. Well, I guess we could say that is true in games played so far but both are freshman and while Kon came out hot, Evans could just be getting started.
Sure, anything is possible, but Kon came in with a reputation as a playmaker (someone you can run offense through and can facilitate for himself and others) and has lived up to the reputation through a tough early schedule.

Evans came in without that profile, as a more pure scorer, and that’s what he’s been. He’s got two assists in 61 minutes of game time.

Even if Evans earns a lot more minutes - I hope he does - I expect his offensive role to be scorer.

Oh I didn’t know Kon had that rep. I guess I don’t pay much attention to recruiting anymore!

As pointed out on one of the DBR pods, K2 is shooting and scoring better than McCain did at this point in his freshman year. And McCain didn't have defenses keyed in on stopping him. It takes some time to adjust. I'm in the camp who loves how he didn't force his shot last night and helped to get those looks for Evans.

What a game for Isaiah. The only downside is that every NBA GM was reminded of his elite shooting talent. I was feeling good about him returning next year - but he's got that longterm star potential which could earn him a first round pick.

Evans vs Gillis? In the short term I expect we continue to see both. Gillis is a better defender and has been a good shooter his entire career. This is just a slump. But at some point he has to break out...
Me too. Speaks to his high basketball IQ that was touted in the summer.

After that Kansas game, I expected K2 to drive the ball a lot more last night. But he and Cooper both seemed very focused on just keeping the ball moving and avoiding turnovers. Only 4 TOs against a great Auburn defense is probably the stat of the night. That or the fast break points.

We did a great job of pushing the ball and getting easy looks in transition. Cooper ripping and running after a defensive rebound was a huge part of it.

My son-in-law keeps up with high school sports, especially basketball. He told me that he thought Evans would have played more this season. He saw him play multiple times in high school. He said Isaiah is a great shooter/scorer and his defense was decent (high school play). However, he's not a great assist man at this point in his career and Coach Scheyer has probably been working on those two things. For a team that needs instant offense he's a perfect fit.

GoDuke!

Before the season, some folks here worried that Evans needed the ball to score, rather than being a good catch and shoot shooter. I think he's answered that question.

I think Kon will figure out to get his shot off. They have time to show him film and offer actions to get him a good option to take a good shot.
Isaiah turns 18. I won’t say my age. I was an undergraduate with 3 coaches
Bucky Waters who was in a photo with Coach K and Elton Brand last night.
Neil McGeachy and Bill Foster.
Willie Hodge George Moses Paul Fox Dave O’Connell Terry Chili were in my class. Tate Armstrong a Junior was the top player. Moses had been in military prior to Duke. May have been the oldest Duke player ever
25 or 26.
We're classmates! I always tell people that "I had the worst 4 years in Duke's basketball history, Bucky's last year, McGeachy's only year and Bill Foster's first two years. But there was light at the end of the tunnel as Jim Spanarkel was a freshman my senior year!"

I reject your contention. I was 71-75. Spanarkel was still in HS my senior year. I missed the Foster years.

And yet, the ACC was amazing, I saw absolutely electrifying players come into Cameron (renamed my freshman year), and Duke played well at home. And except for Maryland, State and the Cheaters (they weren't even cheating yet!) I could walk in at tipoff and get a good seat. So I'm not going to complain.

Those who did not get to see Tate Armstrong play missed a great player. If not for his injury, Duke would've been good his senior year. He played on the US Olympic team that season. Dean Smith the Olympic team coach selected him. With all his faults, Dean recognized great players.

GoDuke!

Kon has def made me appreciate that high school highlights aren't perfect predictors of how you'll perform in college, lol.

But I agree with you on Evans, his reputation in high school was more as a 3-level scorer, but also as a secondary facilitator. On the rare occasion where he touches the ball and doesn't shoot, I see some playmaking potential.

I was pretty fortunate in my era (81-85) to see some great players (Jordan, Worthy, Sampson, Bias, etc.) from close up. But would've loved to see David Thompson and John Lucas play in Cameron. Two transcendent talents (and genuinely good people) whose pro careers were derailed by cocaine.

Well, everyone needs the ball to score. It's tough to put the ball in the basket if you don't have the ball in the first place. ;)

Joking aside, I think it's too early to say any questions have been answered. The trend is looking good though.

The man of the hour is on The Brotherhood pod, and it's a great one. It's so cool seeing how much he enjoyed and appreciated his performance against Auburn.

I was a year or two ahead of you. I had Bubas and Bucky (a night and day comparison - although Bucky may have been better at self promotion - I think he arranged a presentation every year at every chapter and commons room on campus). But -
Bucky was NOT a good - or at least successful - coach

As I remember, the recruits my year were Glen Smiley, John Posen, Roy Kuhlmeir and Tim Teer (I may be missing one).
None made a great impact on Duke basketball (partly due to injuries), but I remember them all as good guys - and they were consistently present in classes that I shared with them - which may or may not still be true.

David Thompson 1974 was electrifying as was Gary Melchionni 39 points against Maryland. Lefty Driesell and Jim Valvano were my favorite non Duke head coaches

Greatest game in NCAA for me Maryland NC State 104-103 and ACC tournament David Thompson for the win. They were chatting about locked in on ACC. Happy birthday Isaiah

In watching Evans against Auburn, I got the distinct impression that he was taller and longer than the other teammates listed at the same height. He is very athletic and quick and gets his shot off quickly. His drawbacks may be he is not yet able to handle the physicality of the game and lacks experience. With his attributes, I see him as getting drafted in the first round, especially if he continues to shoot 3's efficiently. He is also an attracted draft choice since he is young. I see Flagg, Maluach, Kneuppel, Proctor and now Evans as likely NBA draft choice.
