2024 U.S. Presidential election

Wild the degree to which the Biden Administration abandoned Obama's #1 rule of foreign policy in the service of abetting and, if this Politico report is to be believed, outright encouraging the series of escalations that have led us to this point. And now Harris is the one caught holding the bag politically, but she's painted herself into a corner by refusing to give any daylight between herself and Joe.

Edit to note that the wankerizer apparently won't let me link to articles discussing Obama's rule, presumably because the URL reflects the policy: "Don't do stupid sh--"
Yes, folks like Anthony Blinken and Brett McGurk have pretty clearly badly miscalculated in their handling of Israel - unless they too wanted a massive war to breakout weeks before the election.

In McGurk's case, at least, this seems to be what he's after. Amazing he keeps finding work.

Maybe it's just me, but this phrasing is really grating to me. Obama didn't "rule". We live in a constitutional republic. There is no "ruler". There is a chief executive, who must work with the legislature via the courts to accomplish governance. There are no monarchic fiats in America. Not yet, anyway.

Sorry for the aside, but I just find that phrasing really troubling.

"Obama's rule" not in the sense of "Obama's unquestioned domain over foreign policy" but "Obama's guiding principle" or "Obama's one weird trick for avoiding drawing the US into an international boondoggle."

Nevermind. Trump is already doing it.

And Israel will now strike back at Iran with everything they have. There will be nothing proportional about their response as Biden mumbles "ceasefire now" from the Oval Office. This will be a massive attack and escalation by Israel because who's going to stop them? It's all so predictable.
Israel ALWAYS responds disproportionately.

Likewise, Putin has made recent legal moves to give himself more leeway to use nuclear weapons. I will not be shocked if he uses a battlefield nuke on Ukraine ahead of Nov 5. Trump's friends setting the world on fire to pave the way for his re-election...

I wish I had faith in the US response to such an event. Not with the current crew, not with Trump in charge. Harris as an unknown at least offers promise if she gets rid of all the Biden folks.

These politics are very depressing. Thankfully there is some great baseball to watch instead. All 3 playoff games today have been very exciting. Baseball is one thing I (a Bernie Sanders liberal) can enjoy with my 93-year-old Dad (a MAGA Republican). Baseball is life!!!

I wonā€™t get into it much, but responding disproportionately is a key element of their deterrence. Whether one believes that is effective or necessary? YMMV
Yes, that's true. It normally is a deterrent. But in this situation they continue to defy Biden's calls for a ceasefire, first in Gaza and then in Lebanon.

They have been dropping hundreds of bombs on targets all around Beirut - not just in Southern Lebanon. They expected Iran to retaliate. They welcomed it. Because now it gives them an excuse for what they are about to do, and have wanted to do - an all out attack on Iran. And the US is too weak politically to stop them.

people could look at Netanyahu and say ā€œhmm, I guess thatā€™s what happens when you keep a leader who is under criminal indictments and would probably go to jail when out of officeā€. Unfortunately, most wonā€™t get the parallel.

Yes, in Putin, Netanyahu and Trump we have a trio of criminals who are completely absorbed by their own self-interests. This is a very dangerous time.

If Biden were strong, he would go on TV and forcibly say, "I have called Bibi and told him that we must de-escalate this situation now. I expect there will be a proportional response to Iran's attack and then cooler heads will prevail as we put in place a ceasefire immediately with Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, Iran. Anything more than a proportional response from Israel, anything escalatory from Netanyahu, will not be supported by the United States of America. I will not allow us to get dragged into WW3."

Not weird at all:

Said Trump: ā€œI will shut down all entries through Kamalaā€™s migrant phone app. Sheā€™s got a phone app. Itā€™s meant for the cartel heads. The cartel heads call the app, and they tell them where to drop the illegal migrantsā€¦ Itā€™s not even believable.ā€

Back to not quite yard signs...

I was driving home this evening (suburban Atlanta), and I saw a giant Trump billboard.

Trump
A Champion for Equal Rights
Endorsed by Kanye West

  1. Does anyone other than Kanye think this ad was a good idea?
  2. Is the whole point of these ads just to grift off the hundreds of millions of dollars the campaign is bringing in?
  3. Is it possible that the Harris campaign is running ads that appear to be pro Trump?

I am really struggling to make sense of this one. Every explanation I come up with is conspiracy theory level bonkers.
