Imagine raising a transgender daughter. She's now at risk of losing her legal status.

I'm not handling this well. All we can really do is just survive the next four years (or maybe two, if the Democrats storm back and take Congress in 2026), but too many people aren't going to be able to do that.
My thoughts go out to you and your child. As well as anyone else in a marginalized or threatened situation.

I wish we as a population cared more about our fellow Americans and less about scoring points on the other team.

We've had some folks violating the rules on ONLY EXPERIENCED POSTERS being allowed to post in this thread. you must have 500 posts in threads that are not political threads to be allowed to post here. I have been lenient thus far but going forward, folks who have not met this requirement will see their posts deleted and may get infractions.

I have also seen a lot of posts lately that seem aimed at the policy plans of the Trump administration. These are inherently out of bounds. Please confine your conversation to analysis of what happened in the election and not to policy debates. Clean it up, folks!

I also want the community to know that we will be closing this thread fairly soon and the DBR will return to a politics-free zone.

Jason, I'm going to humbly request that you don't do that.

People are hurting. Badly. They're terrified.

This thread is helping people connect. We need that.

And I'd argue that it isn't hurting anyone.

So can you reconsider?

Alternately -- could we have a thread that will allow us the mutual support we're finding here?

My thoughts go out to you as well. The results of this election feel personal for many, as it should. I know my family is largely immune from marginalized situations. I can't imagine the path you are trying to navigate.

I've got two daughters in college that are coming home for the weekend. The celebration coming from the frat bros and that ilk over a rapist and convicted felon becoming president after campaigning on bringing pain to people is too much to endure right now. They need the escape. The electorate made it clear what this country's standards are.
Horrific. I have a son in school who reports the same. Left his hs friend chat group recently to avoid the nonsense. Aggrieved, young, white males are a troubling demographic.

I agree. But if the mods feel like this needs to be closed, I'm all for a closed group conversation on this. I agree that there is a lot of value in this continuing the connection and coping. I think the conversation provided here is much more helpful than anything found in any social media forum.

I’m in for a closed group conversation if that’s the best way.

Another angle (and there are so many ingredients that went into the Trump reelection stew) that I haven't thought about much is just where American political culture is at in this moment. By that I mean it seems like a majority of the Electorate want some form of drama or entertainment in their politicians. Here's an example: I knew early on that DeSantis would never unseat Trump because the refrain coming from many conservatives I live beside was that while they like his policies, he just sounded like a regular politician. I feel the same dynamic worked against Harris. She is just a regular, old-school politician (and that's not a slam - just an observation). Trump's one superpower is that he's not viewed as a regular politician and I think that gets him some significant percentage of votes.

It's not THE ingredient in the stew, but it's one that helps him for sure.

I agree. When January 6 was happening it was a spectacle on TV. And then it was over and people felt like it didn't affect them.

Me too. I think this has been respectful (mostly) and very constructive. It's been helpful for me to decompress and better understand what happened in a more constructive manner.

I'm not sure that's true outside of Trump. And I'm not sure I'd call Harris like a regular, old-school politician. But "drama" candidates didn't appear to do well outside of Trump, who ran well ahead of pretty much all of the folks in his party, regardless of their level of associated drama.

He's a TV trained showman. (And I don't mean that negatively, FWIW.)

But now that GOP voters are conditioned for this kind of candidate, what do they do in 2028? JD Vance is a lot of things, but he's not a showman like Trump is, in my opinion.

In comparison to Trump, Harris projected a normal, sane candidacy. There is a significant portion of the electorate who, for whatever reason, don't want "regular" politicians (especially when it comes to the POTUS) any more.

Again, I'm not sure that's really true, outside of Trump.

Not sure the best way to gather this. If mods are ok with it and if anyone is down for a separate closed group conversation just throw a like (y) here and I can get something started later this week once this thread is closed.

So far I've got Chicago 1995, King of Defense, and acdevil that have expressed interest in earlier response.

With respect, there are many women and men who disagree. I would not dare tell my wife, daughters or sisters this. Our lives changed for the worse after Dobbs and there is no sugar-coating that.
Since you brought up abortion, I'll be careful not to get into trouble with Jason and just say, the unborn will be happy as well. OPK, if this is out of bounds please delete. We discussed this about a month ago.

I suspect (or expect) that Josh Shapiro has begun his 2028 campaign. It will be interesting to see if the Dems trend left in the next cycle, or get behind a true moderate (not just a recently turned moderate). There will be a battle for the soul of the Democratic Party for sure.
It will be a battle. AOC is now old enough to run.

I like Bernie ok but he’s separating himself from reality here. We say the Dems have messaging issues and here he is undermining them. Which party has pushed for the child tax credit? Which party has established worker protections? Which party has strengthened labor unions? Which party has openly opposed right to work laws? Which party has overseen an increase in manufacturing jobs over the last 4 years?

Meanwhile, here is the list of unfulfilled plans from Trump’s first term. This is what the working class voted back in.

Ok, but maybe we do have messaging issues. We have all those things going for us, but we can't seem to get that across to the American public.
