2024-25 Schedule Intel

In terms of division 2 or low-major teams, the likes of which we would typically play in an exhibition, I'm thinking of UCF (Johnny Dawkins). I also remember during the covid season we were scheduled to play Howard (Kenny Blakeney) so maybe that's it.

EDIT: just saw the most recent posts. Liberty would be an interesting opponent. Would Seth really come back for that? He only spent one season there.
From what I understand, a D1 team can only play an "open" exhibition against a non-D1 team. A team like UCF or Liberty would require a secret scrimmage that is closed to the public or a charity game. If it is a charity game, it most likely wouldn't be held at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

But it COULD be held in Cameron. D1 teams can and have hosted charity games against other D1 teams on their home floor. Illinois, for example, hosted Kansas for a charity exhibition game last October at the State Farm Center in Champaign (capacity 15,500). Dayton hosted Ohio State last year in UD Arena (capacity 13,400) and just announced a similar game against Xavier this year.

I don't know if Duke is playing Liberty (JasonEvans should neither confirm nor deny), but it fits. Ritchie McKay is in his second stint as the Flames' head coach; he recruited and coached Seth Curry the first time. In between he was an assistant for Tony Bennett at UVA, so he knows Cameron. Seth, for his part, just re-signed with the Hornets, so he should be pretty close by in October.

If it isn't Liberty, then the more obvious answers involve...

1. Recent transfers: current players formerly of Duke now on teams that are not on Duke's regular season schedule. Mississippi, Texas A&M, Missouri, Ohio State.

2. Familiar coaches: former Blue Devils who lead their own programs now and are not on Duke's regular season schedule. UCF, Howard, Northwestern, Arizona State, Niagara, Harvard.

I have doubts that the coaching staff would want to play a game against a team just because they have a recent transfer. That doesn't strike me as a positive experience for anyone with the possible exception of Jeremy Roach and Baylor.

Familiar coaches makes more sense to me. Nolan Smith just joined Johnny Dawkins's coaching staff at UCF.

But I wonder if the coaching staff wants to make a bigger splash and do something a little different. That's why my mind went to the G-League and Wojo's new gig as the coach of the SLC Stars (featuring possibly one or both of Kyle Filipowski and Armando Bacot?).

Nolan-to-UCF was speculated by one social media insider back in May, and while it spread quite nicely, it's still not true. You can find Coach Dawkins and his staff here. Adam Hood and Carlos Dotson were hired a few days after that rumor.

In my earlier list of charity exhibition games, I forgot to mention Wake Forest, who hosted and beat Alabama in Winston-Salem in the last preseason. It's significant because the Demon Deacon fans waited until AFTER the buzzer to try to attack Grant Nelson, but alas, he got away. Lesson learned: storm the court BEFORE the buzzer, and Kyle Filipowski doesn't stand a chance.

I did not mean to imply we were scrimmaging Liberty. I don't see that as something that would be unusually exciting for Duke fans.

I think Duke may have a verrrry interesting exhibition game this year. I'll let the team announce it but when you hear about it, folks are gonna go "Whoa!! I want to see _____ back in Cameron."
Going back to the original post, this doesn’t sound like an NBA exhibition game. That wouldn’t be a Duke game or verrry interesting. A game against Harvard or Howard or Northwestern or any of the other schools coached by a Duke alum doesn’t sound verrry interesting to me nor would I be all that excited about seeing that former player back. Happy but not excited.

I’ll guess Tennessee. That would be a verrry interesting game and we’d see Rick Barnes back in Cameron. I’ll probably be proven wrong, however.

I fear it will be Michigan State and Tom Izzo. We’ve seen them too much.

Wait. I can do this.

Duke is playing the Lakers. And fans are gonna say "Whoa!! I want to see JJ back in Cameron!"
This would be insane. But I can't see the Lakers traveling to Durham NC.

Unless...unless... JJ convinces the world's greatest star who claims he would've gone to Duke that he needs to play in Cameron once before he retires. 😳

Lakers 91 - Devils 88. Bronny hits the winning 3 pointer with 4 seconds on the clock.

Back in the day, the US National Team would play exhibition games in Cameron. TeamUSA for an encore - call it Cooper's Revenge!

I recall Laettner playing a game with the T-Wolves a few years after he graduated - I recall him having long hair and a headband. Guessing fall of 1993 but wouldn't swear to it.

I appreciate Jason's work here but I'm generally not a fan of the "I know something really cool but I can only tell you part of it" posts. Either tell us or don't. Don't go halfway. You're well connected to the program. Mazel Tov. We appreciate when you share things. But half sharing isn't cool.

If I cared enough I could probably find out in 30 seconds but I don't need to call in that favor. And I'm sure there are plenty of others like me. Back in the glory days of Facebook we called it "vague-booking" - posting "I've got big news to share" - it was considered a major faux pas.

Though some of the replies have been entertaining.

When I saw the words liberty and curry, I wondered if we were scrimmaging the Hornets. But I’ll assume that’s unlikely, and guess that we’ll be seeing Arizona State.

Is it too crazy, or outside the box, to guess that the exhibition would be against a women's (WNBA) team with a former Duke women's player? E.g., the Aces?

Just brainstorming...

That would be a yawn fest. The ladies would be lucky to score 20 points.

So, if the WNBA all-stars were playing a high school boys team like PVI, how many points would it take for you to make a wager on the women to cover? I think they might be able to cover a 25 point margin in a 32 minute high school game.

Maybe.

I would pay money to watch that game. PVI would have a big height and athleticism advantage. But the women would school them on all fundamentals including shooting. Where the boys would likely have a decisive advantage is with rebounding. But I think the game would be a lot closer than 25 points.
