Sort of... it's been pretty well documented that teams with those types of bigs have tended to underperform in the tourney. Dickinson has had those troubles himself, and before breaking through last year with a truly transcendent performance, Edey's squads also struggled in the tourney. If we play one of those teams in the tourney I'd argue it's because another element of their squad is really, really good that will likely be more of a concern than, "Can 6-foot-9 Maliq Brown hold his own for 15 minutes against a bigger center?"
When we have a game where we are not the #1 adjusted defense in the country, then maybe we can start worrying about our two bigs.Eight of the past 12 FF teams had what many would characterize as bruiser bigs, so I'm not sure where the underperformance is.
I agree that Maliq is okay as a 15-mpg backup center, but I read post #81 as implying that Duke would be okay with Maliq as a starter. My opinion of Maliq at the five is well known, so there is no need to reiterate it. Maine scored 30 of their 62 points in the paint.
Amen. Also, we do have a huge, talented guy headed for the draft lottery. Discussion assumes Man-Man gets in foul trouble and the opposing team's lumbering oafs don't.When we have a game where we are not the #1 adjusted defense in the country, then maybe we can start worrying about our two bigs.
It's never too early to start worrying. When we have a game where we are not the #1 adjusted defense in the country, then maybe we can start worrying about our two bigs.
Great, now I have to worry that I started worrying too late! It's never too early to start worrying.
It's what we do best. (For the record, I am not concerned about Man Man)
And now I have to worry that you only just started worrying. Thanks AGD.Great, now I have to worry that I started worrying too late!
Kinda like how the sooner you start procrastinating, the more time you have to catch up?Great, now I have to worry that I started worrying too late!
I've felt this way since day one.
I think Jon is trying to free up Tyrese a bit, in order to give him the chance to lock up the other team's best guard, and not get gassed, but so far it's not working. Caleb is a better catch and shoot guy, good driver, not a great distributer. Tyrese has been a point guard for Duke for two years. I think this is some unnecessary tinkering by Jon. Foster slows himself down when overdribbling sometimes. Particularly when he goes between the legs. Tyrese is such an aggressive north-south guy. It's funny, but I am most worried about guard play this year, and this is where we have the most experience.
Kon is great. Reminds me of an Indiana-style guy. I can imagine him playing for Bob Knight. He's got that meat and potatoes game. Fundamentals are solid. Almost flashy, but not quite. He gets a four point play and barely celebrated. Reminds me a bit of Mason Plumlee, who also had that "just go to work" midwestern attitude.
Cooper is the real deal. I do worry a bit, about the lack of a guy who's gonna really demoralize the other team. Coop and Kon seem fine to just play the game without much bravado. Sometimes you need a little arrogance on the road in the ACC. Mark and Flip might have had too much of that last season. Mark cost us the game at Tech. It's a fine line.
If Wojo had had more height, talent, athleticism and strength, he would be K2. Kon seems to play with that same focus and enthusiasm.
Patrick Ngongba would beg to differ.I missed Illinois, who starts a 7'1" guy. If nothing else, Duke will have plenty of practice contending with teams that have serious size in the paint.
Duke has excellent positional size and depth everywhere other than the 5 (and of course Man Man is big, but he's the only one on the roster). If you had to pick one or the other, I'd rather be in Duke's position.
Two amusing things from the game:
1. Chris Spatola describing Kon as having a “keg stand body.”
2. Khaman’s Michael Jackson glove.
Oh him!Patrick Ngongba would beg to differ.
I took it to mean that he has the body of someone who might, on occasion, drink beer to excess. But, your interpretation makes sense to me too.I actually heard "kick- stand" which puzzled me, but I figured meant hard to knock over.
I had actually have never heard of "keg stand" (I am somewhat of a nerd), so I googled it"
"A keg stand is a drinking activity where a participant performs a handstand on a keg of beer while attempting to drink as much as possible or for as long as possible. The participant's legs are held up by other people, who also hold the keg tap in the participant's mouth."
I think "kick stand" is more likely.
I think Flip was right there, too, but only played two seasons for usI saw Jeremy Roach get his shot swatted twice before I turned off the Baylor/Gonzaga non-contest. I maintain Roach probably holds the Duke record for getting his own shot blocked. It says something positive about his fearlessness going to the paint, but he's just a little too small to justify that confidence.
DeMarcus Nelson says hello too.I think Flip was right there, too, but only played two seasons for us
One man's excess is another man from Milwaukee's breakfast.I took it to mean that he has the body of someone who might, on occasion, drink beer to excess. But, your interpretation makes sense to me too.
Especially if it’s from Culvers - well, preferably Kopps….One man's excess is another man from Milwaukee's breakfast.
Patrick Ngongba would beg to differ.
valid concern, although he's out of the boot and mobile, so if he can play i assume he will. Just not real soon i would think.I'm wondering if he's going to play this year. Getting a DNP in the opener (which will be one of the easiest games on our schedule) doesn't bode well for his PT this year. If he is a healthy scratch against Army, that won't be a good sign.
