MBB: Duke 87, unc 70 Post-game thread

I rewatched the 1H and was reminded that Maluach had a GREAT first half. 3-4 for 6 points and super effective on the offensive boards. He grabbed a few and also had tip outs that extended possessions.

On defense we switched everything and he was often on Cadeau or Davis, but there wasn't a single play the entire half that a UNC guard made him pay. That's amazing.

I think because we are switching 1-5, he's often out of position to get defensive rebounds. Apparently that's a trade off Jon is willing to make.

I know Khaman faded out in the 2H. I don't plan on watching it. But he was very sharp in the first 20 min.

I’m betting we see a ton of zone in the next matchup. That really threw off all the momentum. But it didn’t matter as the game was over long before that.

And on offense I’m sure we’ll see the cheats look to score much earlier in possessions.

I was thinking the same about DV — thought it would be cool if he showed up to the booth and, “surprise!” That being said, there’s a fair amount of other fans on this board that get a little cranky with his commentary that gets off topic — but that’s usually when Duke is pulling away. This one would have been great to have DV call — he would have been praising Coach K and Coach S and lamenting UNCs downfall the entire second half. Hope he makes it back to Cameron very soon. The guy is a good soul and called so many memorable games at Duke — and the ACC overall rose to prowess in the media with his enthusiasm behind the league as ESPN grew its dominance coverage college basketball which was a small sport (relative to NFL MLB NBA and College Football). DV really should get more credit for drawing attention to the sport. As for Bilas, I’m used to his approach. Sometimes it feels like he repurposes the same story thru-lines from the beginning to end of the season. But he’s consistent (which is great in media) and well prepared. And he gets credit for advocating for the college athlete and was way ahead in NIL (and countering the leverage of the NCAA monopoly). Alexander goes from analysis to — remember that time at band camp — from zero to sixty in two seconds — completely forgetting there’s a game at hand. It would be nice to get a game experience where we predominantly hear the fans, the squeaking of the sneaks, the whistle, ball bouncing, cheerleaders and the band playing with minimal commentating — like old school MLB. But in the day in age when two bros essentialy run a zoom call and kid each other incessantly during a NFL game — and it gets big ratings — I will have to hold my breath. I think the workaround might be to have a simulcast of a Kardashian quietly live tweeting on her couch, because she would have not interest in verbally commenting about the game. The flip side for entertainment would be her figuring out which future players career she’d want to destroy. That would bring in the younger female demographic for a win-win.
It wouldn’t be very hard for ESPN to do the silent simulcast. They can continue to have Bilas and Schulman do the main broadcast, but do an exact clone of that stream with mics of Schulman and Bilas muted. I mean, they used to do a separate stream with the rim cams and no announcers for the whole game. Because they could stream it on the ESPN app, it wouldn’t have to take up their broadcasting streams on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or ESPN News.

We’ve almost been conditioned to think that we need commentators and color analysts, but why? I would love to just watch the game, listening to the players play and the sneakers squeaking on the floor and the crowd noise.

I wear hearing aids and the crowd noises tend to drow the announcers. I would prefer the dampening of the background in order that the announcers voices were clearer through the hearing aids.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that back in the day, although we had announcers working the games, they didn't talk as much as they do now. Maybe i'm misremembering, but it seems like they let the game play out a bit more, and made a lot fewer comments.

If that isn't true, it should be. I would lobe a broadcast where very little is said, but where announcers are there to clarify when it's not entirely clear what is going on, like when the refs are at the monitor. And maybe they could call out how many fouls have been committed by a player when a foul is called, things like that, but otherwise keep their mouths shut. That would be my idea of a perfect broadcast.

Can you imagine it? Just listening to the ball, the sneakers, and the crowd noise; then, when a whistle is blown, an announcer says, 'a foul was called on Proctor; his second.' And then just shuts up again.

A guy can dream, can't he?

We have generally been great against the zone looks we've dealt with this season. Mainly because Cooper is a nightmare for zones when we place him in between the lines with his length and ability to find shooters or rise up for a floater/midrange pullup. I was suprised it disrupted us against Carolina, and if the Heels go to it for an extended period of time in the Dean Dome I don't see it going well for them.

And the stadium announcers just to get the same explanations as the crowd. Of course, they won't do this because such a high percentage would flock to this feed!

I agree. Zone thrown in as a gimmick can disrupt us for a short time because sometimes it's hard to recognize what's happening in real time. Once we identify the defense, we should know how to exploit it. I'd have to watch the last 8 minutes again, but we missed a bunch of looks that we were hitting earlier. The zone disrupted us a little, but we still got shots. Just need to hit them.

]Coach Davis: "Our unforced turnovers are something that we've got a problem with. It’s just turning the ball over. We've talked at great length about how important it is to take care of the ball in two ways. One, obviously unforced turnovers and shot selection. And our live ball turnovers are turning into pick-six plays for the opponent. Giving teams – just for example, tonight, Duke gets 19 points off of 14 turnovers – against good teams, that's just not going to work, and so just got to do a better job of taking care of the basketball... that was the one key that got us in a hole early at the beginning of the game."

"Well, the counter [to Duke's length] was how we played in the second half. We created gaps to be able to get into the lane. We played off of two feet. We had tremendous spacing, ball and player movement. There's a reason – what did we shoot in the second half? 64% against the same defense. That combination of ball and player movement was not consistent in the first half. If you don't have that against them, it’s very difficult to score because of their length. It's real from one to five. The gaps are small, and you have to move those gaps to make them bigger. We were able to do that in the second half, but unfortunately, we were just behind too much."

I love it how Hubert was forced to pick between praising Duke’s defense and calling out his players for failing the execute, and he chose to throw his players under the bus citing “unforced turnovers”. It’s the Carolina Way.

But, they could monetize this the same as the main broadcast. Same commercials. Same everything. If viewers flocked from one ESPN feed to another ESPN feed, the bigwigs at Disney should be agnostic about that.

The commentators, of course, would lose some salary negotiation leverage, but that’s just a reflection of what the viewers want and don’t want.

Oh no you don't...March on over there and stare into the Stupid Abyss. It's well worth the innoculations and biohazard gear 😉
The trick is knowing when to leave.

Depart before things over there start to make sense to you. If you are beginning to understand it then it's already too late.

You are not misremembering. It's called bloviation inflation.

You actually see this in women's games pretty often - especially if it's a lopsided game. Towards the end, the announcers will just say less instead of filling the space with unrelated prattle. It's really lovely. The announcers over there just don't seem to need to hear themselves talk nearly as much... I wonder what the difference is 🤔😂

Since they don't mic the timeout huddles and I don't know the hand signals, I don't know if the margin loss incepted simultaneously with the call for clock management or not. If it did, then I am OK with the team's performance during that period. I can well imagine going into a game with peak adrenaline flowing and then start playing with the pace and intensity that comes from that. Then, if the coach says, "slow it down", you don't just slow down, you lose rythmn and intensity. I'm not a fan of it. I suppose if you are a gracious victor, you do stuff like that. But, the Cheats don't warrant the consideration, unless you and Hubert happen to attend the same church.

Be that as it may, I am moving on to 'Cuse. They still play a lot of zone?.....here's our chance to get more practice playing against it.

I would love a few examples of the “best of IC “
Comments…
It's like showing up at an old time smorgasbord....too many wonderful options to choose from. As others have mentioned, some form of reality is threatening to settle in. They are no longer a pre-eminent program, and Hubert can't return them to glory.
Along those lines, throw in some gratuitous "let's go get Brad Stevens" posts.
Perhaps most painful for them is the widespread acknowledgement that Duke is really good this year and is running recruiting circles around them
Even what passes for normal behavior over there, e.g. the assertion that Flagg is a punk on the court with way too many antics, gets roundly rejected. When I find myself feeling some sympathy for them, I quickly leave because that's just not a healthy feeling.
