MBB: Duke 78, Georgia Tech 70 Postgame Thread

You could, but if you're going to head back to Duke and have the images downloaded to be looked at by Duke MSK radiologists, you might as well just get the imaging done there and use the protocol the radiologists are used to. I'm sure there are also excellent radiologists in Charlotte, of course, but they'd want an official interpretation done by the people they know and trust anyway.
Maybe there is a market for software that can provide a. Protocol that permits sharing. I realize there would have to be releases, etc, but that just a procedural detail.

We can still beat UNC without Cooper and Maliq—we just have much less wiggle room in how we do it.

In Chapel Hill we were able to pivot strategies midway through the game because of the flexibility Maliq provides, combined with Cooper's transcendence. Without them, we still have the guys to shut down RJ Davis and make someone else beat us. Doing that will just involve taking more risks (not switching with Man-Man, some more aggressive hedges, daring guys like Withers to make shots), hence less wiggle room. But we can still execute the game plan to beat UNC better than a lot of the teams that have beaten UNC this year. If Lubin gets a double double and Withers and Trimble make a ton of 3s and we lose, so be it. But we can make it so that that has to happen for them to win even without Coop and Maliq.

Oh, and BTW, I have to imagine every one on the court wearing a Duke jersey will be plenty stoked to get to put their stamp on the rivalry in said scenario.
I think we can, but we need to address the issues we saw in the first half of this past Saturday's game. Their quickness really bothered us, especially with ManMan on the floor. RJ would either hit the step-back 3 or they would dribble into the lane when Maluach was switched onto RJ. Maliq completely neutralized this in the second half. Some small ball with Mason at the 5 could be worth experimenting, especially if Cooper can't go. That means Slim will play the 4, which could free him to find space on offense. Guard the perimeter, and challenge them to beat us inside.

I think it is EXTREMELY unlikely we see Maliq again this season; no matter how far we advance.

A major dent in our defensive versatility and halfcourt offense.
Geez, you’re really bringing me down, man. 😞
I like to always try to be optimistic and hold onto any glimmer of hope.

Personally, I think Maliq will play in the big tournament and play well.

Here's an article that covers the basics. The guy who came up with RICE originally has actually led some of the research. The gist of it is restricting blood flow slows down the healing process and the restriction lasts a lot longer than the time you actually have ice on the injury.
This was super interesting, and I'm not surprised that our staff might be up on the latest thinking here. It always seemed crazy to me that there was so much focus on preventing your body from responding naturally.

Time for real talk for a couple of minutes, so no DBR reverse-jinx, pessimistic SD for this post.

We can absolutely beat UNC tomorrow. In fact if I had to bet my money would be on us tomorrow. Even without Coop and Brown we are the better team. Heck, I think we are still the favorites to win the ACC Tournament. So I'm looking forward to a nice weekend ahead.

The only thing I don't like about it being UNC is that I genuinely do think it's hard to beat the same team twice inside of a week. And if UNC does pull off the upset I'll be ticked that they got to play us in a depleted, vulnerable state. Plus, I imagine if they win they punch their ticket to the Big Dance. And that would suck. But here's to hoping our guys all come out strong tomorrow and complete the best Trifecta in all of sports - Duke>UNC.

Go Duke!!

I similarly wonder whether we would consider going true small ball for stretches with Mason at the 5. It has limited use cases, but unc might be one of those. We could also see some zone usage. I also think some screen defense concepts other than switching (blitz, hedge, ice, etc) will be seen more than the last match up. The coaching staff has their work cut out for them.

A week or two ago I posted that if Cooper wasn't on this team, Kon might average 20/5/5 and be ACC POY. 28/5/8 today.

I'm not convinced Maliq won't be back. Remember he'd been telling Jon that he could play for 2 weeks. If it's just a pain issue, and there's no risk of further damage, I bet he returns. He probably needs surgery in the offseason regardless.
Agree with this

I wonder why they didn't do the RICE treatment. No ice, and not raised.
Excellent point. on a swollen sprained ankle that’s what you do from beginning. Perhaps it was done during halftime, but there’s no reason it couldn’t have been done while he was on the bench
As the press conference, John said that it was already swollen

Absolute disaster of a win, losing 2 important players to injury is never good. Started terrible, and then once Isaiah made a couple 3s we were able to relax and really choked GT for a while. They started hitting shots again and we basically just traded baskets for the last 8 minutes or so. Not terribly impressive defense against a team that doesn't shoot very well. Missing 2 of our defensive stalwarts was certainly a part of that, but GT was lighting us up before those 2 went down.
Kon was masterful as the PG, and he and Sion are all we need at PG. I never want to see Caleb as the PG again, nor do i think he can really handle playing against regular rotation players from other teams.
I was impressed with Big P/Oat, he's got great hands and good touch around the rim. Jon will need to re-order the defense to deal withe lack of Cooper and Maliq. I really don't think Khaman nor Patrick are good options out at the 3pt line in a switch everything defense. Khaman has gotten burned repeatedly in the last few games in that action and really doesn't look good doing it. It's never been Big Pat's thing.
I just hope we shoot better tomorrow, and that our guards remember how up in our grill they were last time and remember to value the ball better.

Wasn't able to watch, saw Duke had 14 points even with Flagg with 4 or so minutes left in the first. What happened up until that point?
