MBB: Duke 78, Georgia Tech 70 Postgame Thread

Some game stats for our guys.

Kon 28 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and just 1 turnover. 9+ plus-minus
Man-Man 14 points, 9 rebounds. 5+plus-minus
Isaiah 14 points, 2 rebounds. +8 plus-minus
Tyrese 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 turnover, +13 plus-minus
Sion 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers. +6 plus-minus
Patrick 7 points, 2 rebounds. +10 plus-minus
Mason 0 points, 4 rebounds. +11 plus-minus

Not so good plus minus
Cooper -7
Maliq -8
Caleb -7

GoDuke and Wake beat the Cheats.
Shows how useful the plus/minus is.
Once two of the minuses (Cooper and Maliq) were out of the game we played much better.

1. Or am I missing something?

2. Or is plus/minus for one game backward looking, not forward?

3. Or am I just twiddling my thumbs and mumbling to myself.

Probably number 3. 🤷‍♂️

We don’t beat UNC without Flagg and Maliq. We wouldn’t have won at UNC without Maliq. Without both… I can’t buy it.
We can still beat UNC without Cooper and Maliq—we just have much less wiggle room in how we do it.

In Chapel Hill we were able to pivot strategies midway through the game because of the flexibility Maliq provides, combined with Cooper's transcendence. Without them, we still have the guys to shut down RJ Davis and make someone else beat us. Doing that will just involve taking more risks (not switching with Man-Man, some more aggressive hedges, daring guys like Withers to make shots), hence less wiggle room. But we can still execute the game plan to beat UNC better than a lot of the teams that have beaten UNC this year. If Lubin gets a double double and Withers and Trimble make a ton of 3s and we lose, so be it. But we can make it so that that has to happen for them to win even without Coop and Maliq.

Oh, and BTW, I have to imagine every one on the court wearing a Duke jersey will be plenty stoked to get to put their stamp on the rivalry in said scenario.

5 thoughts…

1. Flagg and Brown go out in the 1st half. Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! That’s all I have to say about that.

2. The injuries really phased Duke in the 1st. A couple of 3’s by Evans helped keep it close, and Ngongba played well. But Duke looked out of sync. Then the team rallied well at the end of the 1st and in the 2nd. It was definitely a team effort, with Kneuppel leading the way. And he did his best Marty Clark impression from the line at the end, which led to Duke sending the Yellowjackets home. GaTech is going to be a better team next year, assuming they don’t have transfer portal woes. They had heart. But in the end, talent won out.

3. It’s not new news, but the Kneuppel to Maluach pick and roll really works well. It seems like the big man can somehow put his hands on Kneppel’s passes better than from other Devils.

4. Very thankful Duke is 10 deep. Even if Flagg and Brown don’t play another minute in the ACCT, Duke can still win it. I’m sure the rest of the team can rally for their injured teammates, as well as wanting to prove that Duke is not just Cooper Flagg…. The time that Ngongba and Evans have had this season provides height and scoring off the bench. And Foster is at least serviceable off the bench, with very high upside. I’ve been saying that Foster needed to stay ready. Now is his time.

5. Duke is still a very strong team even without Flagg and Brown. They should at least be able to get to the ACCT final. And though it would e a much harder final, Duke can still win it all. I do wish Lucas was still with the team, though, to devise a revised defense. Tomorrow’s game will be interesting, to say the least. I want Wake to beat UNC and squash Carolina tourney hopes, but I wouldn’t mind playing the Heels tomorrow, either.

Even if Jai was still with the team you don't design a new scheme and implement it in about 24 hours with no practice. This team has already shown multiple defensive looks - switch everything, hedge, drop coverage, zone. They don't need a new defense, just a high level of execution from those who haven't been heavily relied on so far.

Yep. Some small defensive adjustments can be made on a game-by-game basis, but at this point, the guys need to fall back on their training and trust their newly built habits and muscle memory.

We don’t beat UNC without Flagg and Maliq.
Do some of you people even read what you post?

It's impossible... We can't win... Boo hoo hoo...

Like, were you a fan when Coach K was the head coach? Can you imagine him (or Jon for that matter, or any of our players) saying something like this?

Do you remember the UNLV game? The final regular season game in Chapel Hill in 2001? etc etc

I really hope that unc wins their game, so that we can beat them while down two rotation players, and a whole host of posters on this board have the chance to think about what Duke basketball means, the standard of excellence that every player is going to bring to the court, and the (missed, blown) opportunity to give your team some support in the darker hours.

I doubt it. All the X, X-rayy, sonograms and MRIs are digital. They can evaluate from a distance if necessary.
I'm just going through the thread so I apologize if this was subsequently covered, but unfortunately, many hospitals do not communicate with each other in regards to their imaging. I am a radiologist in the Duke system and frequently can't see images from another hospital. Some hospitals can direct transfer the images into the medical record with a signed release, while others can't and require a physical CD of the exam to be downloaded into the Duke pacs system locally. It's really unfortunate.

I'm in the camp that if there is the least little concern, don't play Flagg for the rest of the ACC tournament--which is now only played for the TV money and is otherwise meaningless for a team like Duke which does not have to win/finish high to have a chance of making the NCAA tournament. I am a physician and can tell you all it is not recommended to sprint, leap many inches into the air and plant and pivot on a freshly sprained ankle, even if you think you "can." A sprain can be a very significant injury and your ligaments actually never really return to baseline. Romping around on a sprained ankle too early delays healing and causes further injury. Flagg is not going to get "rusty" resting for two games at this point in the season.
I think we've seen the last of Malik Brown this season. He shouldn't risk his whole career and it seems his injury is a serious one. (coming back in a risky situation can also be used in this day of social media and hot takes for negative recruiting--"See how they ruined that guy? They don't care about their players. Do you want that to happen to you, Timmy?") I think he has another year of eligibility? If so hope he spends it at Duke.

Yeah, can confirm. Getting images from one facility to another can be very frustrating for all concerned.

Cooper's freshman teammates played great.

Yep. Even without Maliq and Cooper, we should be favored over UNC. Our main challenge is adjusting in a hurry. But we already started the adjustment against GT.

Wouldn’t you just pick up the images on a thumb drive or whatever before leaving?

I've noticed that over the season. Kneuppel seems to be the best at setting Maluach up. The rest of the team don't seem to have the timing down as good as he does.

That's mostly because he is best at going inside at set plays and finishes super well so they have to respect him. He usually has a smaller player guarding him so they have to pick their poison. If their big comes for help, he can prob. If not, Kon finishes.
