MBB: Duke 72, Incarnate Word 46 - Post Game Thread

It was the day before finals, and we were playing a team that had no chance of truly challenging us. I'm gonna give the students a pass on this one.
The students did a decent job of filling their side of the bleachers. Upstairs was 90% full too. All were a little late in arriving.

That was an interesting game. If the halves had been reversed, we wouldn’t be fretting so much.

First half, the defense was fine, but not great, and the offense, well, the less said the better, except for Khaman.

Second half, the defense really turned it up. How many shot clock violations did UIW have, or crazy forced threes late in the clock? Duke seemed to be switching almost everything and even with Khaman matched up with their point guard, it worked. Probably helped that UIW had some non-shooters on the floor.

Duke seemed to get into its offense quicker at the beginning of the second half, and that improved the flow remarkably.

Scheyer’s post-game presser is worth watching, as usual. Not all of it is in the Duke transcript. He was asked to compare Cooper and Flip, and talked about how you can’t switch them, but Flip did his damage on switches in the post, whereas Cooper does it all over the floor. He also talked about getting Cooper some easier shots, which obviously they need to do. He said nice things about Patrick, something to the effect that Patrick is a natural and has great hands, notwithstanding the two dropped passes when he first came in. Scheyer said he’s never seen Patrick miss a pass before. He was asked about Isaiah and once again said what a great attitude Isaiah has. Mentioned that Isaiah asked to guard Spencer in practice, which no one ever volunteers to do!

Good....Man-Man having his best game, even if it was a poor team. Isaiah continuing to show he's our best 3-point shooter. Kon 2-4 on his 3s. Bad...poor start and poor first half offensively.
Hoping Maliq returns to the court for the next game.

GoDuke!

Not a great offensive showing from the team in the first half. The defense did what it was supposed to do (after a bit of a slow start the first few possessions on that end). But it took until the second half for the offense to get going. Second half offense was as expected going in. But yikes was that first half a speed bump. Hopefully it was just a matter of sleepwalking through a weak opponent at exams time.

It was very nice to see Maluach take advantage of a favorable matchup, and for Evans to give the offense some life in the second half. And of course the defense continued to do its thing, dominating an overmatched opponent. The offense remains a work in progress though.

Get through exams, maybe they get a bit of a break over the weekend, and hopefully they get going next Wednesday!

In a short turnaround game before exams, Duke won, the defense was stout, and Man Man played great. I'm happy.

I think the offense would be greatly aided by taking fewer threes and getting into the paint with an eye toward the rim. Good things seem to happen when Duke gets in the paint with the goal of putting the ball through the hoop. Enough of this drive and brick.

I hope they get going next Tuesday!

My guess is that Jon was looking to integrate Maluach into the offense and thought this was a good game to concentrate on that. It wasn’t fun to watch, but I believe Jon has a plan.

Can someoene explain the background about the baby. What is the point?
Some sort of superstition?
I think it was inspired by Dick Vitale’s “Oh Baby!” call… in my time in Cameron we would do an “Oh! Baby!” chant and point to the baby once or twice a game.

1. Did people really expect Duke to roll though UIW like a buzzsaw? I personally expected something off, just not sure how it would be off. And in the 1H, offense was off. Hard for anyone to get up for this game. The players should be up, sure, but reality says differently. The good thing IMO was that defense still showed up. That's all that mattered really for this game. It was good bet that talent was eventually going to take over offensively. And it did.

2. Nice game from the big man. It likely helped his confidence moving forward. I think he's on an upward progression. And I for one don't have a problem with him starting. Let the opponents see how big he is at the tap. Yes, I agree with the general consensus that Brown is a crunch time player. Which means it doesn't really matter who starts, it matters who finishes. Maybe at some point it will be a Maluach-Brown offense/defense substitution possibility (with not much of a drop off either way). Or a toss up. That would be a nice problem to have.

3. Good to see Evans keep shooting hot. He still needs work on the defensive side, as I noticed a few errors watching him. Glad to read he's taking that seriously.

4. Hope Brown's toe heals well. Anyone with a toe injury knows you can work through it, but it hurts. Good to give him the time to get it better.

5. This will be my first game not picking Flagg for MOTM. I liked that Scheyer used the bench early. No need to risk injuries, plus the bench guys get some PT. I really do want to see Borden in one of these games, him being a senior and all. Plus he seems like a good guy.

Main question is whether we actually are a good three point shooting team. If we aren't, teams are going to start sagging and making our dribble penetration and pick and roll even harder to come by.
I hope teams sag. We have multitudinous snipers who just haven't quite gotten their rifles sighted yet.

Haven't heard it (from TV) this year. Or anything except "Let's go Duke" and "Let's go Devils". Need more creativity instead of just depending on weird costumes that do nothing to give us a home court advantage.

We need to get over the bad starts.
I obviously have no idea if this is true or not, but it seemed to me that Sion James was making a strong effort at the start of the game to NOT have a bad start again. This, in my opinion, is part of what led to his head-scratching fouls (two in the first minute of play) that seemed out of character for him based on his play in the preceding games this season.

Another theory on our slow starts is that the Duke bullseye on our jersey has never been bigger. #1 defense. #1 player in the draft. Three freshmen lottery picks.

These teams are coming in highly highly motivated to prove something and lock us down on D. And they are having some success. But it's not sustainable over 40 minutes.

Our team has to adjust to this reality and match the intensity from the opening tip. I'm a fan of letting James + Brown set the tone.

I think the answer to our slow starts begins with our starting lineup.
