MBB: Duke 106, Stanford 70 - Postgame thread

Impressive performance. Proctor and Cooper continue to play at a really high level. Glad they are looking for Khaman on lobs again; they had gotten away from that recently. Blakes really struggled. I had hoped he would have a good game in his return to Cameron. Kind of a minor point but it would be nice to get a little more scoring off the bench, aside from garbage time. Foster finally looked to be playing carefree and just having fun. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come for him.

Scheyer in the postgame: You hope you can build a team like this all the time, where you have complete buy-in and unselfishness, but also care about your individual success. Hopefully they combine and players understand their best chance of success is team success. And it helps when your best player doesn’t care about his own stats at all. If he doesn’t care, how can you care? As a coach, you can’t make your team do certain things. The players have to have it within. And our leadership, from Tyrese to Sion to Cooper to Mason and our vets, down to the freshmen, they have it.

Everybody who played for Duke scored. Neal Begovich scored his first points of the year! Ed.- sorry, didn't see that Cam Sheffield played but didn't score...
Caleb Foster scored 10!!! He looked aggressive, and other than 1 rather poor finish in traffic looked like a decent player. I think Jon consciously did not play him in the normal substitution pattern so that he could play with no pressure. CF has really struggled during game-pressure situations this year, and allowing him to play free 'n easy was important.
All around dominant win for Duke.
I feel bad for Jaylen. He struggled hard, but at least he scored a bucket. In fact, most of his shots were bad shots.

Was it just me, or did this game take a really long time to play? I could believe it when I looked up and we had 95 points and there were still more than three minutes of game time at about 10 min. after 6:00.

What was the chant directed several times towards Raynaud? Sounded like Alabama or something like that from our seats

How many dunks for Khaman? Seemed like a lot.
I said to Khaman in the locker room that he shot 8-9, with the only miss being a 3, and the rest feeling like they were all dunks. He humbly responded, “I’m 7’2”, I’m supposed to dunk everything.”

I also showed Neal Begovich some photos I took of his teammates cheering for him on the sideline, and he said this is a memory he’ll cherish for a long time. He praised the team being so connected. It’s definitely something you hear again and again from the guys and coaches.

I was wondering what was the adjustment? Were we double teaming him? I noticed Cooper doubling him at one point. It was really impressive what ever we did!
What I saw was early in the game Duke was focusing on ball denial but then lost focus and Reynaud scored 7 straight points. In the second half, we kept focus on ball denial and Cooper came over repeatedly to double team and go for the block. Reynaud also missed shots in the second half he made in the first. Scheyer had ideas and the team mostly executed.

Our offensive efficiency was 160.2. That's the second best offensive outing for a Duke team in the KenPom era (1997-present). In ACC play, Duke is shooting 60% from 2, 39% from 3, and 80% from the line. Earlier this year we talked about having to win games with our defense. The offense might legitimately be ahead of the defense at this point.

If you told me Stanford would shoot 12/29 from 3, I would have said "uh oh, this is going to be too close for comfort ala the State game." We won by 36. After the blip against Clemson, we've held consecutive opponents to below 40% from 2.

Cooper is shooting 47% from 3 in ACC play.

This team is special.

Our starters in particular seemed to have an effective game plan on offense and were getting and makiing quality shots at a winning clip. Stanford had no answer on defense and we totally rolled over them

Tyrese had another very strong game continuing the tremendous uptick in his offensive production and efficiency.

Cooper had another great game with scoring, assists and defense

Khamran executed the pick and roll for numerous dunks. He elevated his overall game but still can get more aggressive and better.

Kon makes plays all over the floor not just scoring.

Sion isplaying PG at a high level and fits well with the other starters

Special mention to Caleb who exploded for 10 points in 5 minutes of PT. Looked like a different player tonight.

This team is really spoiling me with the weapons we have. I can't remember a Duke team with this many good outside shooters.

Here are the 3-point stats for most of our guys:
Sion=40%, Cooper= 37%, Tyrese= 40%, Kon= 38%, Mason=37%, Isaiah= 43%.
Here are FT stats:
Sion= 80%, Cooper= 81%, Tyrese= 74%. Kon=88%, Mason= 83%, Isaiah= 87%, Khaman= 73%.

Not so good season percentages: Caleb 28% on 3s, 62% FTs. Maliq 12% on 3s, 38% on FTs. Both brought their 3-point averages up today. Caleb made 2 and Maliq made 1.

GoDuke!
