MBB: Duke 100, Army 58 Post Game Thread

Good victory. I would like to see more playmaking from Proctor Foster and James. There has to be a sports medicine solution to Cooper’s cramping. Just accurate shooting was a little off tonight. They all need to practice free throws. Defense was consistent. Key to keep winning
You would think Gatorade is hard at work for something...
The Cooper Flagg Formula!
Like Coopade or Flaggade or something :)

Just have Coop drink more before and during games. A lot more. Down 64 ounces before the game. 4 ounces every time he sits. Cameron is hot, and he sweats.
To be clear, he explicitly said Cooper was doing everything he should be doing with respect to hydration and nutrition. He was saying the staff needed to come up with a plan to help Cooper.

He who? Clearly, Coop is not drinking enough.

Duke 100, Army 58 (recap, box score, highlights, condensed game, full replay, presser)

After opening the night shooting 1-for-11 from 3-point land, the Blue Devils made 16 of their final 27 shots behind the arc (59.3%). Duke distributed 19 assists on 35 made baskets and collected eight steals, while forcing 13 Army turnovers. The Blue Devils outrebounded the Black Knights, 50-32, including a 35-16 advantage on the glass in the opening stanza...

Kon Knueppel shot 5-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, for 15 points to top Duke's six double-digit scorers. Tyrese Proctor caught fire in the second half from distance, draining four triples en route to 14 points - all after intermission.

Cooper Flagg tallied his first collegiate double-double, reaching the benchmark in the first half with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Flagg stuffed the stat sheet with totals of 13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and two steals, while shooting 50% from the field (5-of-10).

Khaman Maluach also secured 10 rebounds in the first half and finished with 14 rebounds and 11 points for his first collegiate double-double... Sion James and Caleb Foster rounded out Duke's double-figure scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Duke MBB has posted their Every Bucket video:

The Devils Den has locker room interviews with Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, and Tyrese Proctor.

Jon. I was clarifying my earlier post about Jon’s postgame press conference, which you had replied to.

If anyone is interested, they should listen to Jon’s press conference, since he answers several questions about Cooper’s cramping issues.

An obvious headline is, "Another dominant performance against an overmatched opponent." And, at the risk of drawing too much from nothing but overmatched opponents, I think it is safe to say this is the hardest I have seen a Duke team play in years. I point that out because effort is opponent neutral, and against lesser foes it often wanes. These guys seem like they are really embracing the all out effort required to be great and that is very exciting.

That effort fuels the defense which doesn't look pretty so far because the guys are getting used to the myriad line-ups on the floor and are also really pressuring the ball all over the court. BUT, just because it doesn't look pretty doesn't mean it isn't it effective. Combining the effort with our length and the seamingly high defensive instincts and acumen of all these guys is producing a really nasty group to try and attack. Per the effort, we seem to take a real pride on that end and come at you in waves.

On offense, I love that we have gone faster and have embraced the 3 at a rate unprecedented with recent Duke teams. We shot 38 3s tonight. That's not only nearly a 3 a minute, but also 53% of of overall shots. Yes, Chris Spatola again said CFos is our point guard but Cooper is handling the ball, a lot, and his decision making will the ball in his hands is really mature. While his handle needs to tighten up, he reads the defense and understands his gravity, makes great passes as the double arrives, is shooting with confidence, is drawing fouls at a very high rate, and attacks the glass with abandon. How about the way Kon attacks the glass? How about how it seems like he's quiet on offense but he's still our leading scorer and knocking down four 3s? How about Proctor turning into a 3 pointer hunter playing off the gravity of Kon and Cooper, and CFos doing the same but mixing in 3s and drives, which is also something Sion is doing and he nearly caught a historic body on that drive. The unselfishness of this team on offense is awesome, as are the points we generate off our defense and by pushing the ball. Man Man with a 14 and 10.

It's time to see what this team really is against some big boys. We are ready. Bring on the Wildcats!!!!

This Man Man quote warms the heart:

When asked what it’s like to be on a team with so much talent:“It feels great because the players not only are good players but they’re good people, too. They have great personalities andthat’s what makes it the best thing. They make my job easier and I enjoy playing with them and their personalities. They’re greatpeople and that’s the best part about it.

I'm gonna zag from the people who are wanting the guards to do more playmaking. I think what we are seeing is the gameplan. Scheyer wants Cooper and Kon to be the playmakers. Those 2 guys are the best shot creators on the team, and Proctor is clearly benefitting from less ball handling responsibility. Being the main ball handler takes a lot of energy, and he's clearly scoring more efficiently than he was last year with the looks he is able to get now being off the ball.

I think this actually helps his draft stock immensely. I know 30 NBA teams who would be interested in a 6'5" guard who can play off ball, defend, and hits 50% of his 3s (he's 7 for 14 through 2 games).

I always like your analysis Kaze. I agree on Cooper and Kon. They are the two guys on the roster who are 3-level scorers AND who drive with a balanced eye toward scoring and passing.

But I have also been really impressed with Foster's drives this season. And tonight he had a nice bounce pass off the drive to I believe Man for an easy score. I think Foster could end up slotting alongside Cooper and Kon as a third primary playmaker if he shows that he can make smart passes off the bounce and not just drive hard to the rim.

All three of these guys are ahead of Proctor and James IMO. I'd say we have 2.5 primary playmakers right now which is more than enough to be an elite offense.

And yes, I'm liking the role for Proctor as a 3&D guy who can selectively drive the ball but does not have the burden of running the offense. This also lets him really dial in on the defensive end.

Well, it's not like Tyrese lost his dribbling and passing ability, I'd still say we have 4 playmakers in the starting lineup, with Sion as a 5th off the bench. I think the coaches just concluded that Tyrese's ability to score is more helpful to the team than having him focus his energy into creating for others. But it's a pretty awesome luxury to have 2 point guards as your 3rd and 4th playmakers.

Tyrese looks more confident that ever. I've not seen him be this aggressive hunting his own shot before, and it's going pretty well. We're averaging 98 points a game.

Yeah I agree. But the way the offense is shaping up, I'd still call Proctor more of a secondary playmaker than a primary playmaker. But you are right that we have 5 guys that can create offense.

I’ve been kind of thinking the opposite about Foster so far. I want him to look to pass a little more off the drive.

Loved this quote from the Army coach: "I felt our only chance was to try to kind of keep them off balance, mix between man and some other looks and do that. Our guys did fine. I'll be honest, sometimes I don't think our guys knew what defense we were in, let alone whether Duke knew what defense we were in. But maybe that helped us stay above water for a little bit."

Through two games, according to T-rank's stats, Duke has taken 67 two point shots and 67 three point shots. They've made 42 two pointers, for 84 points, and 28 three pointers, also for 84 points.

The bad news is that our opponents are making 92.6% of their free throws. Need to tighten that up.

Just have Coop drink more before and during games.
Hate to call you out but it's not that simple and I'm quite certain Duke's Sports Medicine department understands that he should drink water. This is like when LeBron was cramping during the NBA finals and fans filled up the message boards saying he should eat a banana. As if a world class athlete with a professional team of trainers and doctors had never thought of that.
