JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching saga

Lindsey was G-League coach of the year...

Coaching your son's 9 and under (?) team to the championship isn't equivalent to G-League coach of the year? I'm shocked! Shocked, I say!

Just trying to inject some levity. Hopefully you read that in my first post, too.

I love listening to JJ's podcast. I don't know many (any!) former NBA folks, but I'm impressed with his knowledge of the game. He's a "sicko", to use his own terminology. Will he be a good coach one day? Who knows! But I bet he's smart enough to surround himself with people with complementary knowledge.

can't imagine wanting to leave a good job to take a job that demands a ridiculous amount of time and takes you away from your young family for long stretches, but if that's what appeals to him, I bet he can do it.

Maybe he loves basketball.

Maybe he loves competition and the feeling of beating your competitor.

Might be tough to do that much in Charlotte

I respect JJ's bball knowledge and X's and O's prowess. He has that in his bag, but there's a LOT more stuff that goes into coaching, and without experience, I can't see anyone succeeding at that level right away. He does have a lot of respect with NBA players, so that's a big plus for his ability to relate and manage relationships.

I feel almost certain he would take the job if he got the offer though. Best of luck to him.

No offense to JJ, a favorite Dukie of mine, but if CLT offers him the job it will be an incredibly weak hire right when they supposedly are trying to right the ship, which has not been sinking, but been long sunk on the ocean floor for years.
And it will likely set up JJ for failure, which is something I really don't want to see him experience.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you said here, he's most likely not going to be offered the position. All I'm saying is, based on what I know about him, he would take it.

Charlotte would be a horrible fit for him or any other hated Duke player. The UNCheat banking community owns most of the season tickets and they’ll trash him after every loss. Not even sure it would be wise to move the family there and subject his kids to all that.

Surely there are grown-ups in banking in Charlotte? And, aren't there three Duke guys on the roster?

The thread title made me think about both Good Times and The Jeffersons. A win-win imo.

Redick’s podcast with Lebron shows he has a DEEP basketball knowledge. Whether or not that translates into a successful coach, I can’t say. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a must watch.

All he has to do is win, baby, win and they'll be eating out of his hand. Charlotte and teal though, ugh.

Doubt it. Most people in Charlotte are pretty checked-out on the Hornets to begin with. If JJ came here and lost, they’d just stay checked out.

But we are starved for success- if he came here and the team improved, he’d be embraced.

Steve Kerr says hi.

Yeah, he was a GM at PHX before taking his first coaching job with GSW, but he still says hi.

I said "Might be tough to do that in Charlotte"

It's possible if you have 3 hall of famers and a top 10 all-time player on your roster. How are we feeling about the first ballot chances of LaMelo, Miller, and Mark Williams?

It seems a little odd that we don't think JJ could coach an NBA team. He's smart, knows basketball, has the respect of current NBA players (average players and the stars), will be able to beat anyone on his own team at HORSE for the next decade, has an insanely obsessional work ethic, and loves the nitty gritty. He's played for 6 NBA teams, so he has taken notes from many NBA coaches and from K. He knows a whole lot about X's and O's and about motivation.

Who knows whether wealth might undercut his motivation, but I don't see a lot of players or coaches voluntarily walking away from basketball after they've socked away 8 figures in the bank.

I'm assuming he'd have more trouble being an NBA assistant (he's more of a boss type) or a college HC, which involves 12 months/year and a good bit of making nice with teenagers.

The NBA grind would be intense, but so is a media empire, and I bet he could take off the whole summer, hang with his kids and play a lot of golf.

I don't think an anti-Duke bias would be a variable in his decision. The dude tolerated hatred as a teenager; he can handle whatever they throw at him.

Yes. I'm a pretty knowledgeable basketball fan and their discussion leaves me in the dust.
