Jay Bilas talk to basketball team

If there was even a hint that Jay was allowing his personal biases to mix in with his analysis, do you think he would be ESPN's top college hoops analyst and in line to maybe get JJ's old NBA gig as well?
I realize this isn’t the crux of your post and you may be right about Jay as it appears you know him better than I. But you ended your post with a Q so I’ll answer it.

My answer to this question is Yes. ESPN seems to have little problem with folks showing their biases on occasion and sometimes more often than that.

Stephen A’s cowboys rants (which are hilarious to me as a Niner fan) would be my exhibit A.

Fans have biases and I assume ESPN thinks it’s ok to have their anchors show a little bias if they want to…it adds life to the shows. It’s sports news not news news.

If Jay Bilas chooses to hold himself to a higher journalistic standard that Stephen A, I'm absolutely not holding that against him.

And yeah. I love when he dunks on the Cowboys.

Agreed, it was outstanding. Echoing another poster, a lot of graduation speeches would better if they were delivered at Freshman convocation, rather than when it's too late to change your major or career plans. This speech does have the virtue of being given to those starting their time at Duke.

I'm inclined to think highly of Jay, save for one matter: I have never understood why he went to the mat for UNC's cheating. It seems like he despises the NCAA so much, that in his mind anything else should be preferred, even if it's wildly unethical and immoral, and following their example would lead to chaos.

Wait ... this is starting to sound like the US Presidential election thread. I'm afraid you'll be able to discern the team I root for based on the content of my post! Oh dear ....

To your point, for many years (including my freshman year) Duke had Maya Angelou speak at freshman convocation. It was really great - she was an excellent speaker and really made you felt like you had hit the big time and had incredible opportunities in front of you to take advantage of.
