What did you think Caleb did well last night?I have been tough on Caleb this season so far, but I thought he played pretty well last night. The -13 probably is a result of their early hot shooting and then not playing much after that.

3rd highest box plus/minus on the team and he made a couple of really nice defensive plays. This was not on Caleb. Gillis actually had the worst BPM. But the main thing is, our freshmen didn't play as well as they needed to to win this game.

What did you think Caleb did well?Individual +/- doesn't tell us a whole lot.
I agree with kAzE. I thought Caleb played pretty well last night. BPM and Net both favored Caleb last night.
What did you think Caleb did well?
Caleb was Duke's best guard at getting into the paint and to the rim. He had two blocks, two defensive rebounds, and a steal in 15 minutes. Caleb's defense was not great, but there were other players out there who were just as bad, if not worse. What did you think Caleb did well?
I did think Gillis was trigger happy last night. Also a questionable decision to lob Kon on a fast break lol.He single handedly stopped a 2 on 1 fast break with a block. He had another block and a steal. He attacked the basket a couple of times successfully. He hit a 3 pointer. He's a role player, what else are you expecting from him? I thought he played okay, not great, but he did okay with the opportunities he was given on offense and played pretty well on defense.
Gillis had the 2nd highest usage rate on the team. That is not what we need from Mason Gillis.
For the season, Gillis is shooting 39.3% FG and 28.6% 3-ptI did think Gillis was trigger happy last night. Also a questionable decision to lob Kon on a fast break lol.
How is he going to get reps sitting on the bench. He should be getting some of Foster's minutes not Kon's.Isaiah would be a deer in the headlights in these physical games without the reps these other guys are getting. Jon knows it. No knock against Isaiah.
This says it all.He [Caleb]'s a role player, what else are you expecting from him?
This says it all.
Heading into the season, I was hopeful Caleb would blossom into at least a Roach-calibre scoring/combo guard, someone who can generate offense and get end of shot clock shots.
Divorced from that expectation, Caleb played fine. He did some good things and made few mistakes. But we can't count on him to consistently get a bucket when we need one or make plays for others; he's just not there yet.
Right, I didn't mean to imply that's the most we'll get from Caleb this season. That's where he is now, and while he probably won't be a third, go-to offensive weapon this season, I hope he'll have his moments.Fair. But I think we can expect a little bit more from him. He's still a young player who I would expect to improve over the course of this season. Don't forget, his freshman season got cut short, so he's still relatively inexperienced.
But overall, in order for this team to reach the next level, Coop and Kon have to learn from their mistakes and play like they are 2 of best players in the country, which they absolutely can be.
This right here is what they shouldn't be relying on to reach the next level. Mark my words, It will be the downfall of this season if this is the case. I also will start looking at Jon differently as a coach if Kon and Foster don't do enough for us to win again vs Auburn and Isaiah doesn't get play after that. I've read all kind of excuses in this thread, but if Evans is making his wide open 3's we'll be 3-0 against ranked opponentsFair. But I think we can expect a little bit more from him. Lets stop looking at this from an offensive perspective. Given what we've seen from Evans, do you think he would have given us more defensive presence against the KU guards and wings? Cause I don't. And that isnt a knock on Evans as a player, but I believe defense is what is keeping him from seeing more minutes.
To be an impact player. He's one of two starting guards. He needs to do more.He single handedly stopped a 2 on 1 fast break with a block. He had another block and a steal. Well, make your own decisions. I'm delighted with Jon Scheyer as our coach and will continue to feel the same way, even if they lose to Auburn. This right here is what they shouldn't be relying on to reach the next level. By what measure? Our defense was excellent against Kentucky. For Kansas, Harris (point guard) was by far the most effective offensive player. Storr, who Kon often guarded, had an OK game with 11 points, but I wouldn't call it a field day, nor can I think of a play that Evans would have guarded any better. How many defensive lapses have we seen with Kon? Kentucky and Kansas wings had a field day against us.
This is just a poor take. Kon plays the second most minutes on the #1 defensive team in the country. He is not a bad defender. I've watched our guards, including Sion, get beaten off the dribble as much as Kon. But overall our defense is excellent - not much to complain about.Yes because I believe Evans is a longer and better defender than Kon.

Obviously it would be unfair to place all the blame on Kon alone, but he hasn't exactly been the strong link in our defence. Plenty of freshman lapses and slow close outs.
