Hurricane Helene

Yesterday was a rough one in our house. Mrs.Mountain.Devil got in a big fight with the place she has been working for six years (food and clothing bank) over whose needs they seem to be specifically avoiding. She walked out and I don't think she's going back again.

I decided it would be a good idea to go look at the remains of my old business (again for clarity I am not suffering the financial loss - I sold a few years ago after running it for ten years). It was a mistake to do so by myself while feeling pretty raw.

I took a lot of pics. I might post later.

Hoping the Universe is kinder to both of us today.

Twenty years ago my wife stopped volunteering at the local chapter of a national charity because of her disgust at how they were handling call-in victims of Katrina. To this day she refuses to donate to them. It can sometimes be so unfortunately true that familiarity breeds contempt. My condolences to Mrs. M.D.

Keep the faith brother. We believe in you. I mean, even I do. And I'm not that nice a person. So clearly you're doing something right. Also I met your lovely wife. She's great. She kinda settled, but you and I have both benefitted from that through the years.

I'm so sorry for your rough day. Even though you don't own the business anymore, you invested so much into it that seeing the aftermath had to be awful. Prayers for the two of you as you work your way through this difficult time.

If there is a charity helping those that Mrs. MD was championing, let us know. Maybe some support could be sent that way.

Thanks so much for asking.

The most direct assistance I've seen for the Latinx community my wife has been trying to find supplies to is Poder Emma. This is their website, but it doesn't reflect their work over the last few weeks. You can see their Instagram here. They are a really inspiring group.

In the Asheville area there are many pockets of Spanish-speaking communities. Many are very low income and economically depressed. These people are anxious about reaching out for help, because many are undocumented. It's an incredibly bad perfect storm for people to be incredibly exposed to the elements that are going to become less and less hospitable over the coming weeks.

Thanks for your concern and your consideration.

I mentioned in another post that our church has 2 trucks with supplies going to the devastated areas each week. We had a special offering for cash to go those areas for people that don't have money for food or to pay bills. The donations totaled $30,000. Our Pastor asked the congregation if it was ok for another $20,000 out of our treasury (total $50K). Of course it was a unanimous vote. Our Pastor then contacted Pastors of like faith to make sure the money and supplies were going to all the communities. In other words, all types of people/nationalities. Our church has a bus ministry that goes into all the neighborhoods, we also have a Spanish Church.

I'm so glad that you and your family are doing well. You were in my prayers.

If not too personal or invasive, I'd love to hear more about whose needs are being ignored by that food and clothing bank. That's a bit distressing to hear as a possibility with so many in need in your area.

ETA: I see you provided some more info. That is truly distressing and maddening. As someone with a Latina wife , we are very connected to the Latin community and have empathy to their plight, especially in the current political climate. I donated, but was tempted to shout out the DBR community or Mrs. Mtn Devil in my "donor note"

Oh, it's just stupid beureaucracy. There's a very stark trailer park about 1 mile from the food bank. My wife wasn't allowed to take a massive overflow of blankets, jackets, coats etc for some idiot logistical reasons on a night that it was supposed to get below freezing.

My wife is a wonderful woman, and has a well for righteous anger that can burn like a thousand suns. Letting those supplies sit outside for days instead of getting them to people who it would make a HUGE difference for destroyed a six year working relationship with that organization.

We were able to put that community on the radar lf the aforementioned Poder Emma group. I understand they've been able to help.

Hopefully bureaucracy and not veiled bigotry.

Oh, I'll tell anyone I'm a lucky man.

When we first met, I was a butcher in Seattle. When she would come visit, I'd get a holler from the counter "hey [last name] your disproportionately good looking girlfriend is here."

They meant it as a burn. It didn't feel that way.
