Hurricane Helene

Oh. My point was there's not much you can do against a hurricane, she's gonna do what she's gonna do on a wide scale. Tornadoes may be stronger but they're fast, wind only, and relatively pinpoints. Sea walls are an abomination, they're destroying our beaches. I've hated them since before I saw my first one, I took Orrin Pilkey's class in 1983 and things have only gotten much worse with sea level rise. And there's not an army of pumps that can keep up with the ocean. There's really nothing to do but ride it out and re-build. And watch your insurance premiums go up whether you were affected by the storm or not. Plus I don't remember a hurricane impact nearly like this so far inland, but I could be mistaken. Welcome to the new world of climate change.
Good to see a Pilkey reference here!

My power is back on, but not my internet. This one's going through with my phone acting as a hot spot.

Here’s a titbit from long ago.

While cleaning out my refrigerator due to the power outage I noticed a blue soda can in the back. From reading the label it seems to date around 1991.

I'm not gonna throw that one out. :)

My mother lives in Sarasota, I think they had the worst flood damage from Helene more than any other previous hurricane, but most of her house fine and everyone is safe.
I've seen some videos of Chimney Rock and Black Mountain and its sobering to say the least. Chimney Rock is just gone. I have no idea what those people are going to do. Might be good to have a list of some reputable charities and action groups to donate to.

Good but tragic story on Swannanoa. Gift link: https://wapo.st/3XOffyS

Joe Dancy and Jenna Shaw described a scene from early Friday in Swannanoa that would seem almost hard to believe, if so many others here did not have similar tales of narrow, harrowing escape in the face of an unprecedented catastrophe.
Before dawn, they said, they awoke to walk their dog and saw water creeping up the yard. In less than an hour, as the water rose more than 4 feet, they scrambled to flee with their dog and three cats. At one point, realizing they were running out of time, Dancy screamed down the street to where he could see a member of the National Guard. The soldier tried to reach them but couldn’t in the fast-moving current.
“It was so fast,” said Shaw, 29, who was floating on the couple’s bed at one point. “We called 911, and it wouldn’t go through.”

Well, my two-week vacation in Florida is officially nixed. But, I can't complain (well, maybe a little, selfishly) when there are so many suffering. Madeira Beach's electrical grid is fried and they have to completely rebuild it. It is a mess down there. Every building is damaged, and anything one-story is pretty much destroyed.

As for NC, it just breaks my heart. I came across a bag from CW Moose Trading Company in Black Mountain. Bought a tshirt there almost three years ago when I was last up there. Going to hold onto it for posterity.

How Duke football is helping those affected by Hurricane Helene

Diaz said Duke Athletics will partner with Two Men and a Truck to help people affected by Hurricane Helene. They will collect non-perishable foods and necessities at the Duke Athletics Ticket Office.

“We’ll be offering discounts to football games, men and women’s basketball games to encourage donations,” Diaz said.

Another ACC football/Helene relief story:

"We just came up with the idea of filling up a box truck and getting supplies out there," Vann said. "It might not do much, but it's something that we felt like we could do."

Vann and his mother will be collecting donations at the school's indoor practice facility from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Vann said they're looking for donations of bottled water or electrolyte drinks, premixed baby formula, baby wipes and other hygiene products, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and hand sanitizer, diapers, shampoo, flight lights, lanterns and batteries, as well as blankets and sleeping bags and canned foods.

You know, if stand-up Wolfpack guy Devin Vann ever follows his mother into the family business, I have a suggestion on what to name his moving company. You guessed it: 9F Movers.

I sure hope Mtn.Devil is okay.
I just got out town Sunday (no power or water then, and cell service had only just returned that morning). I have not communicated with Mtn.Devil irl, but I know his former business, 2nd Gear outfitters, was completely wiped out by the French Broad flooding. From our conversations via DBR he lives in north Asheville, which I don't believe experienced flooding like Biltmore Village or around the French Broad...but I only say that b/c I have not seen any pics or heard any 1st hand reports of catastrophic flooding up there. I believe he has mentioned on the board that his wife has some health conditions. I sincerely hope they are ok!

People were going towards mars hill that i know from the flooding .haven't heard from them either. At the office my daughter works at a neurologist from Asheville was supposed to start Monday. As for now they are unaccounted for .Hopefully they are OK.
Everyone's worried about thier wellbeing.

I just heard from a (Davidson) college classmate who lives in the mountains near Mars Hill. He was calling from Knoxville.

He was in the basement of his house on Friday morning when several trees fell. A couple smashed his car and a few more smashed his house. He managed to flag down a ride the next morning from people who had come in to help one of his neighbors. That was lucky; there’s almost no traffic on his gravel road. The rescuers were going to Knoxville so that’s where he is now in a motel by the airport.

I'll just say there are some things in the home page article about this issue that I think are....misguided at best.
Wow. Leading with the Elon Musk love-fest is really, really off. Reminds me yet again why I do not look at the front page. I once again ask the mods or someone who interacts with JD King to sanity check him. Much as we all rush to IC after UNC loses, we are the face of Duke basketball. The poor choices and or glaring mistakes reflect poorly on the Duke basketball community. Is this the end of the world? No. But it is really tone deaf. And this is not directed at Elon Musk. I would feel the same way if someone I truly admired was doing the same thing.
