FB: Duke 21, North Carolina 20

Is anyone else questioning the wisdom of putting Jacquez in the game? While he seemed to run confidently during the one carry he had, he clearly aggravated the ankle during what was an uneventful tackle. I'm sure Jacquez was pushing to get some action in what's likely his last game against Carolina, but Duke needs to be smart and let him heal fully. Duke's medical staff neeeds to be better. Three weeks is not enough time to come back from a high ankle sprain. We can only hope that he hasn't reset the clock on the healing process. IMHO, he needs to be inactive until the FSU game.

You know I love piling on Mack as well as any of us, but I'm watching his presser for the first time tonight and I appreciate his humility. He's not on K's level, or even Roy's level, but he's way above The Hat and the other fillers in between his stints.

This is a good listen. I am betting (but not a pie) that this is the last one you'll see him in after a Duke game.

I was pleasantly surprised by most of his comments in the presser. I objected to ‘…they called holding and that cost us 4 points’ (paraphrased), but most of his comments seemed very sportsmanlike. Maybe age softens the edges (it has with me!)

I notice Mack mentioned several times that they won 5 in a row against Duke. I guess he wanted to make it sound like an aberration that they lost this year.

I don't like the guy, I think he's a used car salesman, but I don't want him fired. They are likely to hire someone better.

Speaking of things UNC football tries to forget, do you think most of them realize Brown left to go coach Texas and won a national championship and will be remembered by many for that tenure over all of his time at UNC?

Mack is in the College Football Hall of Fame, inducted for his achievements at Texas.

Yeah, that will be how he is most remembered by a national audience.

Re: criticism of Maliik above. Didn't Coach said he was too keyed up at the beginning and was missing "bunny shots" he could make in his sleep?

I wouldn't be too critical, as he is clearly able to play at a high level in a high-pressure game.

Re: defense. Lack of talent? Doesn't football defense involve a whole lot of "want to??" Manny is known as an outstanding defensive coach. And, evidently, a motivator.

I think the "Feely Effect" is maybe the only thing we can read into this team so far with confidence, and I agree with you it certainly seems/feelz like "a thing." I'm also impressed with how they've played three terrible half games, and managed to win them all. Perhaps that resilience mentally is related to the "Feely effect" physically. To my eye, I don't see a lot of talent out there.....but incredible conditioning and resilience is not a bad foundation. Given the bigger forces at play in CFB, I think Manny has an impossible job, but is doing it very well thus far....
I agree. I do think this is a significantly less talented team than last year, at least on offense. The defense seems to be performing around the level of last year. It's impressive we've been able to put together some wins, though we could easily have 2-3 losses right now. I'm excited because I didn't have super high hopes for this team. We seem to have kept the "culture momentum" of the Elko years going, and Feeley is the key ingredient in that mix.

Here's a crazy thought- arguably our offensive and defensive MVPs are guys who transferred from New Mexico State and Youngstown State. What a credit to the staff for salvaging what looked to be a disastrous transfer portal season.

I remember in 1997 when news reports came out that Brown was going to leave UNC for Texas, and Mack did a press conference where he loudly proclaimed that he was for sure staying at UNC. He left for Texas the next day. I suppose we shouldn't cast stones when Elko did something very similar, but at least his statements weren't public.

When Mack returned to the CHeats a few years ago fans described him as "UNC's National Championship-winning coach" which is technically correct but highly misleading when the title he won was not with UNC.

1st half started like I feared it would UNC would come out agressive and Duke would have trouble matching them to keep up. But in the 2nd half they stayed with it. Thats the one thing you can't take away from the team. In 3 of the 5 wins, they were down in the 2nd half and had to stick with it and pull off the win.
Still not a fan of the offense, its just not consistent enough, but Star Thomas has had good performances 2 weeks in a row. Jones is also running well in spurts so it will help when Jaquez gets back in the lineup. Defense is solid but not likely to shut anyone out. Looking at the schedule, SMU and Miami look like longshots. Duke has never been FSU, even bad FSU so I'll believe they'll win after the game is over and Duke has more points. FSU is a mess so they probably won't have a better chance than now. GT, NCSU and VT are toss ups, and I'd give each a slight talent edge. NCSU could end up being a different team by the time Duke plays them. Duke should beat Wake as things are now but its the last game of the season and both teams could be in different spots. Duke cannot take any team for granted. GT will be a challenge and a real good barometer to see exactly how Duke stands with the rest of the conference. UNC is a bad team, they just now realized it.

I don't think our coaches are doing him any favors with the play calling. Some quick hitting first fown passes could help him get going instead of putting him in so many third and longs in the first half.
This ^ times infinity. Some shorter passes on first and second down would likely do wonders for his rhythm and consistency.

As it relates to Maalik's running, I don't think it makes sense to try to incorporate designed runs for him as anything other a surprise or change of pace (i.e. very infrequent). But I do think he needs to get comfortable moving out of the pocket and taking a 3-5 yard gain on the ground instead of either lingering in the pocket too long or forcing a very low probability pass downfield. Those opportunities are there for him with some regularity.

My thoughts are similar. Many of these games will be close and we have performed well in the clutch so far. I feel like a 4-4 ACC record is attainable if we are relatively healthy. I’m putting my new O/U at 7.5 wins (I started the year at 5.5) with 10 wins within two standard deviations…

If the OL continues to improve then the passing game will open up more and we may have a decent offense on our hands.

No question Manny is a talented defensive coach and bringing in experienced guys as transfers who can pick up his system quickly is a real benefit while it lasts.

I think 7 wins is very attainable with an outside chance at 8.

I still think some of it is on Maliq. The second and 8, 9, or 10 doesn't help but it appears that he tries for the big play more often than not. I tend to focus on where the ball is so I am not certain but I would imagine that receivers are open in the shorter distance when he goes for the big play.

I like the cut of you jib.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, and last night was another prime example. I think Murhpy's accuracy was pretty on target, he threw the ball to where he expected the receiver to be. He really is not good at reading the field, reading the play, and making adjustments. I've called him a robot, because he throws where he's programmed to do so. Thankfully it all worked out in the end, but he has to become more fluid and I'm not seeing that happening.
