FB: Duke 21, North Carolina 20

perfectly fair assessment by the bookies. I had thought being favorites vs unc was NOT a good thing, especially after they were humiliated by James Madison. I know how the Football Gods work, and everything was aligned against us on Saturday...won't even mention the black jerseys...
I've attended some horror show games in Atlanta, trust the lads won't be overconfident.
Agree on every point above.....the football gods, not to mention "reversion to the mean" (often kind of the same force) are real things in CFB....I'm convinced. And they don't like Duke's black unis either. Amazing we escaped all that bad karma....

I finally had the chance late last night to watch the 2nd half of the game. Jeez...talk about 2 different halves! Manny's postgame comments mentioned that they challenged (my word, not his) the offensive and defensive lines. Whatever they said to the guys obviously worked and then some. Except for a few runs we did a much better job slowing down Hampton and of course we ratcheted up our own running game with both Star Thomas and Peyton Jones getting in on the action. I'll say this...watching Star Thomas juke, spin, and make people miss is a thing of beauty. He also is a more powerful runner than he would appear to be, as he often slipped out of the grasp of tacklers. Houston, we may have a running game!

Our defense in the 2nd half was so impressive. Sure, the offense finally got it together but the defense sealed the deal when it really mattered. Especially with some emerging playmakers, this is a mighty fun team to watch. Let's just hope we can keep injuries to a minimum.
Star Thomas is one of those special runners who moves laterally just about as fast as he does moving forward. He sees where the hole is and finds it. It must be infuriating for other teams to plug the hole our line is trying to open (at those rare, rare times :) ) and find that Star is already five yards downfield five yards to the left or right.

I thought Duke did a good job wrapping him up most of the time. I didn't see many "Saquon Barclay" type runs where he made multiple guys miss. Our tackling was sooo much better than their's was. There were times in the first half where he wasn't hit until he was 5 yards or so down the field but that didn't have to do with bad tackling.

Of course I've only watched the second half 3 times, I'm not bothering with watching the first half again.
There were a number of run where we made excellent ankle tackles, and had we missed them he could have been gone. Alarmingly close on a number of occasions, but good tackling prevailed.

We dominated in the second half. With any reasonable offensive outputs in the first half, it would probably have been an easier win.

I don't think our coaches are doing him any favors with the play calling. Some quick hitting first fown passes could help him get going instead of putting him in so many third and longs in the first half.
I agree with that. Several times, we just needed 3 - 5 yards for a first down, and he would be called upon to throw a long, low probability pass.

I don't care about winning any argument about Murphy's running/not running. We have different views. But watching the games, and reading this thread, my view is strengthened that when a QB such as Murphy cannot present a run threat, then the D's job is much easier. They pass rush more aggressively and efficiently because they can stay in their lanes and not worry about covering the edge. They cover our receivers more tightly, and worry less about explosives because Murphy cannot buy enough time [due to the D's enhanced pass rush and Murphy's stay-in-the-pocket frozenness.] If the D would have to worry about Murphy's lateral mobility and breaking one downhill now and then, their job becomes much harder.

And, as several have pointed out, Murphy does not seem comfortable staying strong in front of a rush to the very last second. That is NOT a good trait for a stay in the pocket passer.

I notice Mack mentioned several times that they won 5 in a row against Duke. I guess he wanted to make it sound like an aberration that they lost this year.

I don't like the guy, I think he's a used car salesman, but I don't want him fired. They are likely to hire someone better.
I watched Mack's presser and was impressed by his candor, centeredness, accountability and graciousness. The context of his mentioning Carolina's winning 5 in a row was in answer to a question about how his team was feeling. He responded that they were feeling awful, terrible, they had played their hearts out and left it all on the field. But then he said that he told his team, Guys, this is what the Duke players have felt 5 times in a row. Yet, they came back and won this one. This was an empathetic, classy comment. He was reminding his team that in sports you do your best and sometimes you lose. No whining. He went on to say that there are life lessons from sports that are more important than winning or losing games.

This reminds me. One thing I meant to mention in my earlier post was how impressed I was with the crowd and how much noise the Duke faithful made. For anyone there Sat night, you folks made a lot of noise as it was obvious even via the broadcast. It sure warmed the cockles of this ol' Duke fan's heart.

Crowd noise was good, could tell on the broadcast. Whenever talking about good Duke crowd noise though, I always think back on the game at ND where we basically owned the stadium in South Bend on the last two drives. I rewatched the broadcast because the game was so good (was in attendance at the game), and you can loudly hear “Let’s Go Duke” even though we were on the road. One of my favorite Duke football experiences of all time, only slightly behind the 2012 Victory Bell win

I have to say I'm envious that you were at the Notre Dame game because that was one for the ages!

That was an outstanding video! Every Duke football fan should watch. I love that they included Manny's halftime speech. Well done Due Football!
The HT speech is the best. I know he's just generally good at motivation/focus, as we've seen all year so far, but ... I can't help but think his memories of Mack throwing him under the bus at UT in 2013 are still pretty fresh.
