FB: Duke 21, North Carolina 20

I wonder how much Mack can rally the Cheats for the game. I like that we’re home dogs, definitely gives more whiteboard fuel. Manny will use this well. However it kinda feels like this will be a binary outcome for UNC, at least from the perspective of their defense. Either they’re mentally already defeated due to a beatdown the prior week and the moral destruction of having a third-string QB starter, or they rally due to the rivalry. Man I hope it’s the former

Side note, as much as I hate Midnight Mike (and boy do I), he did have a way of getting everyone absolutely pumped. Idk how much of this was Feeley though. Anyone who has a perspective on this would be greatly appreciated

I don’t wanna be favored

I know it's trite to say turnovers is the key to the game, but we just have to disrupt the Heels' offense and create opportunities. They can run the ball well, and if they control the clock it could be a long day for our defense.

And Maalik has to cut down on the wild or risky throws. Just can't give them extra opportunities.

I do not want to see a close game that the refs can manipulate at the end. Let's do to them what JMU did, and more, in the first half.

Love the optimism!

However, as a counterpoint, that lot down the road still has better recruited talent, Mack is undefeated against us since 41-0, and they seem to have a way of pulling something out of a hat against us.

In 2014, they allowed 70 in an embarrassing loss to ECU. Later that year, with a huge Thursday night ESPN spotlight and a packed Wallace Wade, with our second straight division title in sights.... they absolutely wrecked us. Please football gods, do not let that happen again. If ever we were owed a close win in a series, it'd be against them.

I think this game might be played in very poor weather. Lots of rain. The soon-to-be-named storm "Helene" is currently projected to be over Western NC on Saturday. Let Bob Green address the Team - RUN THE BALL.

If it's on the current track, the field may be wet but the skies clear. The system will have moved into western Va/Kentucky by game time. If it stalls this week though, have your poncho ready.

So there is a better than 50% chance we could enter the Georgia Tech game at 5-0 here in Atlanta?

After Tech beat Fla State to open the season, I was thinking the game here could be a long afternoon for us. Perhaps FLa State isn't as good as advertised and maybe we will be competitive vs. Tech.

I'm not looking ahead, but of course I am. I typically only get to see Duke football in-person every other year for this game.

Weather matters more to our game than it does to theirs. Hopefully that system ends up somewhere else by this weekend.

I had forgotten that Mack Brown fired Manny Diaz, who was his DC, after a bad loss at Texas in 2013. I hope that gives Manny plenty of extra incentive this week! I know Carolina has a talent advantage, but maybe we have a coaching advantage. Although Mack has seemed more like a figurehead since his return to UNC, and appears to totally rely on his coordinators and assistants.

It doesn’t seem like Mack has changed much either, as he has replaced his coordinators several times since returning to UNC. Former GT head coach Geoff Collins is now his DC, and Collins replaced Gene Chizik, former HC and national champion at Auburn, who was at Carolina under Mack for a total of 2 years (his 2nd stint there).

That game still haunts me. That and the VTech game with the Ross Martin field goal. I don’t think the Cut era ends any different given the stubbornness and refusal to cut coaches in need of firing, but I do wonder what may have been for a few more years there. 2 Coastal titles back-to-back and our ‘cruiting my have been a bit different

Also let’s not talk about the ECU 70burger on the Cheats that year anymore. That fact has me terrified for Saturday. Great memory of history, but I totally forgot and am now so much more nervous!
