DWBB: Summer of 2025

It’s interesting because she literally could talk to Riley Nelson who transferred out of Maryland and came to Duke. I’m sure she could give her the run down on what it’s like there. However, maybe she kept her teammates in the dark about what she was doing.

but they're a perennial mess, which is how they lost a pretty good men's hoop coach...badly mismanaged, no one knows who's in charge.
I don't think that applies to the WBB program. Brenda has been running that show forever, going on 24 years. She was the coach against G during that sad championship game in 2006.

Oluchi's entering the portal seems like such an aberration from Coach Lawson's philosophy and coaching. Oluchi gave no indication of dissatisfaction publicly, but we don't know if there were internal discussions or issues. The program has been very tight and unified so it is puzzling, but then again, there are bound to be occassional surprises. If she does leave, there may be an opportunity for a quality incoming transfer.

For anyone who cares, I just checked with the Duke ticket office about a season ticket renewal. Despite the current seating map on their website, the band will be remaining in Section 17 for the 2025-26 season. I did write to let them know that the seating map was incorrect.

I'm not sure what I, personally, will do at this point. I can't sit in Section 17 as long as the band is there. It's just too loud and the sight lines are lousy. Moving to Section 19 will cost me double what I'm currently paying. It's not that much, especially for anyone regularly going to men's games, but it's more than we budgeted.

I renewed our Section 19 seats this morning. I hope you will decide to join us next season. Overall, I find the games enjoyable, entertaining, and a pretty good value. I don't understand the rationale for putting the band in section 17 for the women's games. It is especially irksome when the students attend and are crammed into the end areas of that section. It seems to be a disincentive for student attendance.

I renewed my tickets today. Go Duke. I'm in section 2 - they are great seats.

Asking this question from you, Phredd3, Has Duke had a highly drafted player lately in the Women's draft? I don't keep up with the Duke women like I do the Men. I know, shame on me.

GoDuke!

Not lately. The last first-rounder from Duke was Lexie Brown, who transferred into Duke from Maryland as a rising junior. She was drafted 9th in 2018, and has bounced around the league since, most recently to the Seattle Storm. I'm not 100% sure, but I think she's the most recent Duke draftee to still be in the league. The last career Duke player drafted in the first round was Elizabeth Williams in 2015, picked 4th overall. She still is playing, I think for the Chicago Sky.

We've had peripheral picks up until 2020, but nobody who has made an impact, and nobody at all in the last five years.

Chelsea Gray? 11th pick in 2014

Tricia Liston was a first round pick in 2014. #12. Same class as Chelsea Gray.
I just saw that Haley Peters (also class of 2014) has signed a training camp contract with the Sun. She has played in Europe with a few stops in the WNBA.

EWill was a class behind Gray/Liston/Peters (one of DWBB's top two or three classes ever), so she's the most recent impact player. But yes, we've had many prior to EWill. Duke's first-ever first round pick was in 2004, when Alana Beard was picked #2 overall, followed shortly in the same round by Iciss Tillis (#11). But we haven't had a first-rounder - or any player who made much of an impact at the next level - since 2018. So, not "lately".

The ticket office could offer no explanation for the move or for why they are keeping it. I guess they've gotten more good feedback than bad? I'm not sure who they are talking to, since as far as I can tell, every single patron with General Admission seats absolutely hated the move, the students thought it was horrible, and at least one couple I know of is just dumping DWBB entirely because of it.

But in the end, I decided that the move to Section 19 is probably the right thing to do for me, even though I hate rewarding them for their lousy customer service. But at bottom, it's still a pretty good QPR. It comes out to about $10/hour/person, which is only slightly more than going out to see a movie these days. As I mentioned last season, it's a move I was already looking at making. I'm mostly just hating the appearance of it. But I'm doing it just the same.

In hindsight, an absolute steal. Six-time All-Star. Finals MVP. Unrivaled Finals MVP just this year. Two-time Olympic gold medalist. (Wild stats in 2024 -- TOTAL of 8 points in 6 games, but 31 assists!

Hall of Famer in waiting, surely.

In fairness to the draft scouts, she had major injury concerns, to put it mildly. Didn't really get to show her best her last two years at Duke.

But yeah -- no one from Duke has had anything close to that impact recently. Before her, there was Alana Beard, Monique Currie and Lindsey Harding. Jasmine Thomas, drafted in 2011, was named to the All-Defensive team five times.

Since Williams went 4th in 2015, the only former Duke players picked in the first round transferred in or transferred out.

In other words, I miss Coach G. But Kara has certainly steered things in the right direction.

No surprise to me that the ticket office had no explanation for the placement of the pep band in section 17 at WBB games; they don’t set the policy for such things. If you want to complain/give feedback about this, here’s my suggestion: send an email to marketing@duke.edu and let your thoughts be known and don’t mince words! I’m pretty sure that certain people in this office are the ones who had the brilliant idea of moving the band out of the end zone and transforming that area into some kind new “fan experience” (remember the sign that stayed there most of the season). Unfortunately, this particular fan experience didn’t come to pass so maybe they’ll try again in the upcoming season.

Thanks for the draft info on the Duke women. Beard was probably my all-time favorite Duke women player. Didn't she get her number put in the rafters? Loved Harding and Gray as well. I love those gals that could shoot.

GoDuke!

She was the first women to have her jersey retired. Definity my favorite women's player, but also one of my favorite players, men or women, to watch in Cameron. Amazing player, especially defensively.

Sorry, "ticket office" was a proxy for "Duke". I've been to the marketing department and back a number of times. No words have been minced. They hinted at the ephemeral "fan experience", but it's still TBD and just as ephemeral. I have no idea what's driving the thinking, despite asking exactly that question.
