DWBB: Summer of 2025

There are 3-4 haves in WBB and we are still a have not. Not a coincidence some South Carolina coach just followed her

My favorite basketball player from among the Duke men or Duke women. Now I'm depressed.

Oluchi Okananwa's run to ACC Tournament MVP was easily the best story in the sport last season. It happened organically, a complete counterculture shock to the current trend of having to import ringers from other teams. And now some team is going to try to merge her into their collective, and won't allow her to be herself.

I hope she changes her mind and decides to return. I recognize that the Mair/Jackson starting backcourt is still in place, but Coach Kara Lawson's entire approach tells you that starting doesn't really matter.

If this is about money, how can that not be tampering? Someone had to approach her. Or can players go to others and ask "How much will you pay me?".

College sports is a cesspool. Not surprised, why shouldn't it follow the rest of the culture. Really disappointed.

I assume that other schools contact the player's agent to see if there is interest, or the agent may contact schools on behalf of the player. Is that incorrect?

The negative of Kara's 10-player system. The stars don't get the minutes to get the counting stats that get them the awards (that Kara doesn't care about.) At least, that's what I'm guessing is part of the reason.
New world of college sports (well, not so new, of course.)

I know it happens to every school, but this one feels different. Honestly, it makes me wonder what the point is to being a fan.

Definitely does make being a fan less enjoyable. One of my favorite parts of college basketball used to be watching the evolution of players from their freshman to senior year within a program. Now we are lucky to see 2 or 3 players do that.

100% agree with Kedsy & Bluedvlfan1. It's why in the last 10 years I have probably watched less than 5 full games of DMBB (which would have been inconceivable to me before then) and have gravitated to DWBB.

That said, this is only 1 player. We still have Ashlon & Co. No disrespect to Louann and Jenessa, but their leaving was understandable if they wanted to see any game time at all. Though unless they are transferring to Stanford, I don't understand why they wouldn't get a Duke degree because they are not going to the WNBA. I had athletic dreams at that age, many of us did, and though I talked to Duke coaches as a freshman I knew it was time to move on.

Oluchi might make the WNBA (I'd say it's 50-50), and I'd also argue Kara is teaching her more pro skills/systems/techniques than most other programs. As I alluded to last night, what most disturbs me is her recent statements in pressers. I wonder what her (former) teammates think.

Final (maybe) thought: She was the 3rd leading scorer and got the 5th most minutes on a team that is going to be a consensus top-5 team next year. What the hell do these kids want?

Would Skinner's arrival be expected to have a negative impact on Oluchi's minutes? Also, I wonder if coming off the bench rather than starting has been a factor.
New subject...what are Duke's academic requirements for an incoming transfer? I've read that a player has to get at least 50% of course credits at Duke to be accepted as a transfer (unless a graduate transfer). Is that correct? Does that imply that only freshmen and sophomores (and grad students with eligibility) are transfer candidates?
