DWBB: Summer of 2025

Some video here, looks like a classic back-to-the-basket post.

Her sister, 2 years older and 6'3", was not ranked in high school and went for 19.7 points and 8.4 rebounds at Bucknell this year.

she entered the portal at the end of the season and has committed to Michigan.

Not that I’m ever upset about getting a new highly rated recruit, but don’t we have 1 million power forwards and right now centers with Roberson coming back we need guards not forwards or centers.

Gonna be a log jam up front

For one year, maybe. And even then Roberson would be the only center.

Fantastic. She looks like she has the height and weight to bang down low with some of the bigger centers we will face. I also really like her use of the left hand to finish inside.

Welcome Taylor.
While I realize such videos are cherry picked highlights, I like what I see. She appears to have a "toughness" to her under the basket game. We already have at least one inside player like that (Toby), but it would certainly be great to have another one...color me excited!

She's only the first recruit of '26; there will be others coming in with her.
By the way, there are only three players 6'4" in ESPN's top 60. If she's actually 6'5", that will make her the tallest.

Can anybody find a real scouting report on her? I like the highlights, but as with all highlights, they only show the successes, and all those are from very close range. From what I can find, she has not been a good free throw shooter in high school, so I assume her face-up game is...um...emerging. I can't really find anything on her defense, which, as we know, is a critical ingredient at Duke. More information would be much appreciated, but everything useful I can locate with Google seems to be behind a paywall.

I'm sure there's a reason she's not a 5 star recruit. Yet.
Hopefully whatever her skillset is lacking she works on this year, and she makes her McD AA dream a reality.

You need to check out some other boards. Some think we need to be bringing in 5 recruits AND 5 portal players every year. And that Kara is missing out on a lot of portal players who average 5 PPG.

Not a scouting report, but these stats may be of interest https://highschoolsports.nj.com/player/taylor-sofilkanich/girlsbasketball/season/2024-2025

The thing with Kara offenses is that they’re kind of retrograde in terms of spacing - even without a center this year we played basically two bigs essentially who didn’t shoot at a time. So while the extra height may matter on d, it still doesn’t change the fact that our offense will be reliant on a very small number of players who can make a jump shot.

But two of those players graduate after Sofilkanich's freshman season, along with Jordan Wood, whose is only a "break glass" type of center. Also, I'm not sure Kara has organized her offense this way intentionally. So far, Kara hasn't been able to land the inside-outside big. I'm sure she would have loved to have Sarah Strong at Duke. Eventually, I hope we will be able to get a commitment from that kind of player.

Meanwhile, with Sofilkanich, Kara is thinking well past next season.

I guess where we disagree is how much Kara is actually trying to recruit bigs and forwards who can shoot. From where I see, she recruits for d first and then hopes that also comes with shooting. Hence players like Sofilkanich, who looks to average nearly 2 blocks and 1 steal per game but shoots 55 percent from the line.

How many centers and big forwards (defined by me as taller than 6'2") do you think are good shooters in the women's game?

Well, I can tell you this: Last season, in the top 100 for most three-point makes in Division I women, there were exactly zero (0) centers or big forwards. Of those who qualified for best three-point shooting percentage (apparently 2.5 makes per game), there were also zero. Of the top 100 free throw shooters (by percentage) in women's Division I, there were four (4) centers or big forwards. Only one (1) in the top 50.

So maybe it's not because she isn't trying.
