DWBB 2024 Off-season

I thought of posting something prior to the announcement, but didn't want to spoil the moment.
In watching Sarah Strong, she is a prolific scorer, playmaker and a solid teammate... but she is not fully invested in defense.
She routinely takes plays off and does not run the court, camping out at half court waiting for the ball.
Perhaps that is just the M.O. of a high school star, but I didn't see that as a good fit for Kara's team mission.

Then I can't imagine her enjoying Geno.

It also will not fly w/ Geno.

Deja Kelly put her name in the portal. Banghart has a problematic exodus going on if she can’t convince her to stay lol.

A familiar opponent joins the enemy.

Chapelboro: Richmond Transfer Grace Townsend Commits to UNC Women’s Basketball

In the 2023-24 season, Townsend averaged a career-best 13.5 points per game and shot 83.9 percent at the free throw line (UNC ranked 14th in the ACC in team free-throw percentage this season). With Townsend leading the way, Richmond won 29 games and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 19 years. Townsend was named first team All-Atlantic 10 and made the conference’s All-Academic Team.

Townsend (player bio) is a 5-5 point guard, and a grad transfer with one year of eligibility. She had 18 points and 8 assists against Duke in the NCAA Tournament first round, and 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists against Duke in November's season opener.

Yep. Most won't be missed, but I'm thinking that Kelly is only one of the major players to head for the exits. She's likely got at least one more behind her.

That may be true, but how do you build a culture? People can say Kara has had transfers out, but I think Celeste was given her blessing (OSU should have been a Final Four contender but ran into the Duke buzzsaw :)) and Shy just didn't want to do what Kara wanted (just look at her box scores at the end of the year, she gave up). Also, there is some talent leaving:

Paris was #27 in the 2022 class.
Key was #9 in the 2021 class.

Oh I 100% agree. But since it's Carolina, it makes me smile. I remember when Duke fans were complaining that we still had P and could have gotten Banghart. I'm so happy that we didn't. Even if we hadn't picked up Kara, I would still not have wanted Courtney. She grates the hell out of me. Apparently her players saying goodbye find her grating too. :D

I was bummed when Shy and Celeste left last season, but we kept our core, and as you say, our culture.

Another point: the only other ACC teams with at least 5 in the portal are Clemson and Miami...who both have new coaches. What is uNC's excuse?

Another thing of note: Kentucky has 8(!) in the portal. Kenny Brooks is cleaning house, or at least bring Virginia Tech with him.

Their gym is too small.

Saw that. Bye everybody, hope your credits transfer! Maybe he can trade with the new VT coach.

GoStanford.com: Tara VanDerveer Announces Retirement After 38 Seasons at Stanford

In 45 years as a head coach at Idaho (1978-80), Ohio State (1980-85) and Stanford (1985-95, 1996-2024), VanDerveer amassed an NCAA-record 1,216 victories. In 38 seasons at Stanford, she led the Cardinal to three NCAA championships – 1990, 1992 and 2021 – and 14 Final Fours...

Negotiations are underway with Kate Paye, who played under VanDerveer from 1991-95 and has been a member of her staff for the past 17 seasons, to become VanDerveer's successor. Paye would become the program's fifth head coach beginning with the 2024-25 season.
