DWBB 2024 Off-season

Some online are speculating that Deja will take her tripping ways down to the Bayou and play for Kim Mulkey. Boy, that's a match made in, well, not heaven.

Kelly makes more sense to me fitting in with Mulkey than say, SDW (who I can imagine getting benched at some point).

USA Basketball: Twenty-Six Athletes Expected to Participate in USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team Trials

USA Basketball today announced 26 athletes expected to participate in the 2024 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team trials at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Trials begin May 15 with the 12-member team expected to be announced at the conclusion of trials...

Twelve athletes represent the graduating class of 2024, while 14 represent the graduating class of 2025.

Incoming Duke freshman Arianna Roberson is among the dozen from the class of 2024, while the list of 14 rising high school seniors includes a pair of uncommitted players offered by Duke: Jasmine Davidson and Brynn McGaughy.

Without any fanfare, Duke WBB has the 2024-2025 roster posted at GoDuke. Jersey numbers for the newcomers, plus their listed heights and positions:

11 Riley Nelson (sophomore 6-2 guard; transfer from Maryland)
21 Arianna Roberson (freshman 6-4 center)
35 Toby Fournier (freshman 6-2 forward)
42 Jenessa Cotton (freshman 6-2 forward)

Roberson is the team's only official center. The two tallest returning players, 6-3 Delaney Thomas and 6-4 Jordan Wood, are listed as forwards.

Much speedier than last season. :p

Duke announced the hiring of Kyra Elzy as a new assistant coach. Eloy was most recently the head coach at Kentucky. She was let go, and as most know was replaced by Kenny Brooks.

The four assistants from last year are still listed on goduke.com, so this looks to be additional staff rather than a replacement.

(She’s not yet listed on the coaching roster, but typically subtractions are removed quicker than additions.)

Really interesting hire. Here is the GoDuke article on the move. Welcome Kyra!

You'd think the Duke press release would mention that she was teammates with Kara Lawson at Tennessee :p

edit: Ah, it's in her quote.

The FIBA U18 Women's Americup began today in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

Team USA 97, Brazil 51 (recap, box score, full game replay)

Incoming Duke freshman Arianna Roberson had 4 points (2/6 FG), 5 rebounds, and 1 steal in 14 minutes off the bench. 2025 recruit Jasmine Davidson, offered by Duke but still undecided, got the start and played 19 minutes, scoring 11 (4/6 FG, 2/2 3PT, 1/2 FT) and adding 5 rebounds, 1 steal, and 3 blocks.

Tuesday's opponent is Puerto Rico. The game starts at 4:10pm ET and you can stream it on FIBA's YouTube account (embedded below):

Can't tell much from today's level of competition (Puerto Rico has scored 20 through 3 quarters and was shut out in the 3rd), but Ari is very long and runs like a gazelle. Good hands. I think Kara is putting together a very fast, athletic team.

Although Sarah Strong would have been a huge 'get' for the program, she does not fit the general mold for the team. I think we'll have a lot of fun watching this group. Great 'D' with a fast breaking offense.
