Duke Women's Soccer 2024

You can tell almost to the minute when I was finally able to tune in when I tell you that I saw the third goal, but not the first two. BTW, I hate that the ESPN+ broadcasts have no replay whatsoever. Not live, not even at halftime. There's no way to see what you missed except to troll around online. You'd think they could hook up an AI to find goals at least.

Tennessee on Sunday
The Vols have been struggling a bit this year but the usually give us a good game

#1 FSU 1. #24 UGA 1 last night. Wild last several minutes in a barn burner of a game. FSU without several players last night including their star Jordynn Dudley.

I believe they have a limited number of live replay games. Extra equipment and personnel are required. This was not one of them.

Duke out of TDS Week 4 Top 25
#1 Stanford
#2 UNC
#3 UVA
#4 FSU
#11 Clemson
#13 Notre Dame
#16 Pitt
#20 Wake

BTW, Ohio State, our only loss, is #24

I said something similar in the other thread -- I cannot understand why Duke isn't able to consistently keep up with the top programs in the country.

Soccer parents spend a gazillion dollars on youth soccer specifically so they can get their kids into good schools. In a lot of cases, the scholarship doesn't matter. Just get in the door. Even if you have to make up a kid's soccer background and bribe someone. (I still don't understand how a player with no notable soccer experience was able to be on UCLA's women's roster for a year, and the *men's* coach was implicated but not the *women's* coach.) A Hall of Famer has been an assistant coach for decades. The team has come so close on several occasions. So why would they ever leave the Top 25?

Consistently keep up???? We have been a top 10 team for much of the past 15 years.

2023: didn't make ACC or NCAA tournament
2022: 2 seed; lost in OT to Alabama in Elite 8; fifth in ACC, lost on PKs to UNC in ACC semis
2021: 1 seed; lost to Santa Clara in Elite 8; third in ACC, lost to Wake in ACC first round
2020: put an asterisk on the 9 seed due to COVID; lost to FSU on PKs in Elite 8; fifth in ACC, lost to FSU in ACC semis
2019: unseeded; lost to Wisconsin in 2nd round; sixth in ACC, lost to UVA in ACC first round
2018: 4 seed; lost to Georgetown in Sweet 16; second in ACC, lost to FSU in ACC first round
2017: 1 seed; last trip to College Cup, lost to UCLA on PKs in semis; 1st in ACC, last trip to ACC final (lost to UNC)
2016: 3 seed; lost to West Virginia in Elite 8; 3rd in ACC, lost to FSU on PKs in ACC first round
2015: 3 seed; last trip to national final, lost to Penn State 1-0; 8th in ACC, didn't make ACC tournament
2014: missed both tournaments

So that's five outstanding seasons, two OK seasons, one not-so-good, two misses.

It's a testament to the strength of the ACC that Duke has done nearly as well in the NCAA tournament as it has in the ACC!

So yeah, the questions are different for the women's program than they are for the men's. It's more a question of whether they'll ever turn the corner and win it all. It's also astounding that they've never won an ACC tournament.

But hopefully, last year and the current slip out of the Top 25 are just aberrations.

They've never won the ACC Tournament because in large part, UNC and more recently Florida State have dominated.
UNC has won 22 ACC titles, FSU 10....the rest of the league 4

In the last 10 years, Duke has:
1 trip to the National Finals
2 trips to the Final Four
6 trips to the Elite 8 (both times 3 years in a row)
7 trips to the Sweet 16

And you ask, "I cannot understand why Duke isn't able to consistently keep up with the top programs in the country.".......Seriously????

Not only has uNC won 22 ACC titles, they have won 21 National titles - more than half of all the NCAA titles that have been contested. And we play them every year, sometimes twice, sometimes more. They were every bit as dominant as the UConn women were in basketball for quite a long stretch.

No way UNC's current womens' coach will be successful as Dorrance. Gone are the days that UNC gets the best players from over the whole country. They get great players, but not the best. He also tends to like players from his old club he coached at. No knock on the club, but UNC will no longer have the same diversity of players they had in their glory days under Dorrance.

Times have changed recently. In the 80s and 90s, the sport was just beginning, and UNC were able to get the best of the best, and that was a small population. Now there is such a larger pool, with more programs, so the talent is diluted. Historically, UNC ran the show nationally, but they have not won a natty in over 12 years now, going on 13. The new coach at UNC will not help the cause either.

Duke has been to the NCAA Tournament 28 times; only 7 teams have more appearances

Only 8 teams have made more College Cups

Those 8 include UCONN (last trip 1994), UMASS (last trip 1993) and Colorado College (last trip 1991)

So was last year an aberration that most programs have? Or was it more worrying, especially now that we know Church is leaving?

Still frustrates me a bit that Florida State has been so successful. Why there, of all places? Krikorian's obviously the real deal, sure.

The UNC mystique has been gone for a while. I'll be sure not to remind Anson of that when I see him next week. :)

6th best recruiting class in the country this year
Best transfer class hands down this year....crushed the portal
Likely top 5 recruiting class next year

Not sure why the takedown of Rader was not given a PK on review. Had it merely been 1-on-1 with the goalie, no issue with the call, but the defender inserting herself into the play with the forearm shimmy changed the momentum of the offensive player, thus should have been called a foul, and [since in the box] a PK. I sometimes struggle with why the ACC bothers to have video review in different sports, given they seem to get so many calls incorrect on review...

Well, damn. No sooner do we here that Ari Roberson is out of the year for basketball than we see Kat Rader go down and head for the locker room with a fully splinted ankle, bearing no weight whatsoever. No foul against UNC was called on the play, which would have given Duke a penalty at least. But far bigger than the lack of a penalty is the loss of Rader, almost certainly for the season.
