Duke Women's Soccer 2024

ESPN reporting Anson Dorrance has retired. Maybe this gives Church an easier path in his last go-round?

At least Roy gave them a whole off-season when he quit. Dorrance really did pull a full Dean.

Anson Dorrance admits as much in the ESPN article:

"As many of you know I modeled our program after Dean Smith's basketball program, and retiring at this time is a credit to his thinking, as well," Dorrance said in a statement. "He would re-evaluate his tenure, not after the season, but after he had time to re-charge his batteries prior to the next season. When he didn't, he retired."

Dean Smith retired in October 1997. I remember reading a magazine article at a specific place on Duke's campus a few years earlier (I graduated in 1995) in which he said that he would make a decision to retire before a season started, rather than when a season ended. I thought that was weird, so it stayed in my mind, and when it actually happened, I wasn't surprised like many others were.

Maybe he had an ulterior motive to have Bill Guthridge succeed him, at least in the interim, but it wasn't like some nefarious secret plan. He gave us warning years in advance, so it was more like a nefarious open plan.

I'm on a committee with Anson. It'll be interesting to see what he says at the next meeting.

For those who don't know -- his wife was a longtime dance faculty member at Duke.

21 players transferred or turned pro early this spring. There were also published reports of an assistant who left before their 2nd round NCAA game last year having a romantic relationship with a current player. A lot of people insinuating he was forced to retire.

He had a player named Mia transfer to Duke. The signs of the apocalypse were there.

Mia Oliaro is a star. She was a top 20 recruit for UNC. A member of the U17 and U19 USWNT. Her parents were both D1 athletes. Hails from Chapel Hill. Honestly, with her excellence in the classroom, in paper she appears to be a natural fit for Duke.

Top Drawer Soccer named forward Mary Long to their Pre-Season Freshman All America team
No Duke player was named to the top 3 preseason All America teams
5 ACC players on the 1st team, 5 on the 2nd team, 2 on the 3rd team and 5 on the Freshman team

In other news, TDS reports that Duke got their 1st recruit from the junior class, forward Sofia Lopez of Rebels SC in Chula Vista, CA
Although she is not ranked by TDS, she does play for the Mexican U17 national team

TDS ranks this years recruiting class as #6 in the nation. Amazing considering we lost our top 2 recruits (Jackson turning pro and Washington switching to FSU)). Church crushed to portal though and brought in 4 major impact players in Walters, Hase, Oliaro and Bebar.

0-0 at the half
Duke outshooting OSU 6-3 (3-1 SOG)
Duke escaped near disaster in the 17th minute as OSU went over the top to their freshman right winger who dusted Nicky Chico in a race to the ball. Her near post shot kissed the right post and bounced to the center of the 6. Chico compounded the mistake by mindlessly clearing the ball up the middle instead of clearing to the sideline. The OSU player intercepted and had a 1 v1 with Freeman, but she exploded off her line, closed on the shooter, effectively starfished, and took the shot square in the chest and covered it.

Duke loses 1-0 despite outshooting the Buckeyes 21-9 (11-3 shots on goal). Duke had 5 corners; OSU none.

The goal we surrendered was just awful. In the 55th minute, Bruster gets the ball under no pressure and for whatever reason decides to strike a weak back pass to Freeman. The ball is easily intercepted by the OSU striker who rounds the keeper and buries it in the back of the old onion sack. Just terrible. Unfortunately, we continue to stick with defenders who just are not good enough or athletic enough. This is U12 stuff…play progressive soccer. Simple passes up the field. Link with the midfield and get defenders to commit and open up space.

The Duke defender gets an assist on the goal. Looks like another long year for our devils.
