Duke Men's Lax 2025

Tells you all you need to know about Duke’s offense this year. Leading goal scorer with only 30 goals. To be in top 15 of single season goal scorers in Duke history you need 52 goals…And Duke has already played 17 games.

Tough way to see it end. We clearly didn't have it going today, but still made it close. More importantly, we did what we needed to do over the past few weeks to secure an NCAA bid, and gave UNC the belt along the way.

The lack of firepower probably puts a ceiling on this team. But with our defense and goaltending, I think we could win a game and be a tough out for one of the top seeds in the round of 8.

That seems like a realistic expectation for this team--although it may depend on who the first round matchup is. Although Duke should get a home game based on RPI, it's not guaranteed. Even if they do get a home game, as a 7 or 8 seed Duke will probably face a pretty tough team. Fingers crossed.

So I am hoping Friday was not just an out-of-body experience, because this team looked much more like the one we have seen all year. Excellent defense, come-and-go offense, problematic clearing.

Here is my question: In our first game against Syracuse, Engelke was 2-6 on faceoffs, McCarthy was 0-2, and Girard was 8-14. today Engelke was 2-8, McCarthy was 0-4, and Girard was 4-8. So why did Girard take only 40% of the faceoffs? Is there something I am missing?

The box score at GoDuke shows Syracuse as having 4 faceoff violations. I don’t recall how many of Gerard’s 4 wins were Syracuse violations, but several of them were. Girard absolutely provided a boost in the first game, but I thought all three of the Duke faceoff guys were overwhelmed today. I think it’s a major concern going into the NCAA tournament, along with the unforced turnovers on the offensive end of the field.

(7) Duke gets a Saturday night home game against Georgetown. While nothing comes easy for this team, Georgetown is 0-3 v. top 20 and 11-1 v. 21+. I know nothing about them except we used to play them every year for a while.

Great. Hopefully everyone in town for graduation will show up for the game and give us a real home field advantage. Pep talk from graduation speaker Grant Hill?

No real surprises.

Not a gimme against Georgetown but probably as good as it could be hoped for, Georgetown has a lower RPI than Harvard and Notre Dame, we can thank the travel rules for that I guess.

Notre Dame has to go to Ohio State, UNC gets Richmond saving us the rematch, and Cuse has a rematch against Harvard (they lost the 1st matchup by a goal).

Duke played itself into a nice spot. Well done.

Home game in the first round they should win.

Quarterfinal against a Maryland team where Duke will be a solid underdog. Roll into Long Island and give the Terps your best shot.

If you're looking for a silver lining, if Dano can find a way to unlock the offense and make a magical run to Memorial Day weekend, we wouldn't see Cornell until a final. More time for CJ Kirst to potentially be abducted by aliens and be unable to play.

If we beat the Hoyas I think we play our quarterfinal game in Annapolis.

Thanks, that is probably right. I specifically remember seeing Girard win one faceoff outright and violating on another, but I don't remember whether he was facing off on the Syracuse violations. Arguably some faceoff guys might be better at inducing violations by the other side than others, but figuring that out is way beyond my pay grade.

And I certainly agree that the faceoff game overall looked weak and is a big concern going forward.

I think that is about what it would take. 😄

You guys are probably right, but there's SO much parity this year, I'm betting (in the metaphorical sense) Cornell doesn't win it all. I have no idea who will.

Assuming the seeds win in the first round, Duke faces UMD in what is essentially a home game for UMD. I watched UMD play in the quarterfinals at Annapolis in 2018 (when Duke faced JHU) and Maryland fans turned out.

Redwoods selected McAdorey number 2 overall and Jack Gray was picked 27 overall by the Outlaws.
