Duke Football 2024

ACC Players of the Week:

Linebacker - Ozzie Nicholas
Defensive Back - Chandler Rivers

Ha, funny. FSU is bad this year, no doubt, but it's highly suspect that they are one of the 10 worst teams in ALL of college football. They've been competitive in all their games except one (and against P5 competition). If we barely won a game against the team that's the 9th worst team in all of college, I'd be concerned. I assume they're largely there simply because of how far below expectations they have performed this season. In that scenario, they're probably #1!

I would be surprised if they're not heavy favorites against Charleston Southern in the second to last game of the season. They may even be favored against UNCheat. The rest of the schedule ain't easy though (Miami, ND, Florida).

Great line (sweeter being from up North and having my NY great great grandfathers civil war sword hanging up in the house) - "The last time someone went through ACC country like this, they were carrying orders from Sherman."
Yep...that's quite a statement on Duke's success so far...a bit hyperbolic, but hey...

Wow!! I absolutely could have written the same parenthetical with my great great grandfather’s sword on the wall above my desk. Now if your tell me your great great grandfather was mustered out of Courtland, NY with the 157th NY Vols. We should probably exchange DNA samples.

That column is (allegedly) about infotainment, not actually identifying the 10 worst teams.

No one should take those articles literally...clearly comedic material

Winless Kennesaw State won’t be on his list next week. They defeated previously unbeaten Liberty this evening for their first defeat of an FBS program. Sometimes the answer is no Liberty.

SMU football has been aiming to be in a major conference for decades. SMU, the school, has wanted to be an elite national Methodist university for even longer. Ie, it aims to be the Duke of Dallas.

This is a big game for them.

I’m just figuring SMU is good for 30 points (averaging over 40 in their last 4 games). How do we keep up?

Yes. I’m worried about this game. They want it badly. We better want it more.
Honestly I think the players on the field don’t feel anything more than a typical game (and might even care less, given they’re playing in a smaller stadium than other games this year and against a traditionally less-football focused school). Many of the players on SMU could have gone to Duke to play football if they really wanted.

Call a spade a spade, it’s the students and administrators that feel like jilted lovers with the rejection letters to show for it that want this win. Fortunately for us, they aren’t on the field!

I'm sure SMU wants to win, but I don't buy the smaller stadium bit since their own stadium only seats 32,000, and WW seats 35,000 even with Devils Deck...SMU also played at Nevada which also has a smaller stadium than WW.

I’m just saying this isn’t them playing at Doak or Death Valley or Papa John’s or even Kenan. If SMU is up for this game, it’s because the coaches motivated them for regular-way reasons.

Put it this way, the actual SMU players themselves are not motivated in my mind at all by some sort of inferiority complex that we are implying the rest of the school has for Duke (which is what a lot of the “SMU really wants this” chatter is about)

I’ve never thought they had an inferiority complex at all. We’re just another football team they want to beat.
