RUNNING BACK – Star Thomas, Duke, RB, Homer, Louisiana
Thomas ran for 166 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries, while also catching two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Blue Devils’ win over North Carolina. His 166 rushing yards marked the second-highest single-game total by a Duke running back in a win over North Carolina, trailing only a 193-yard performance by Jack Alexander in 1935. The 166 rushing yards were the most by a Duke running back since Mateo Durant amassed a program-record 255 at Charlotte during the 2021 season. Thomas is just the sixth Duke running back in program history to have three or more consecutive 100-yard ground games. 122 of Thomas’ 166 rushing yards came in the second half, propelling Duke to its second-largest come-from-behind victory in school history.

I thought maybe they meant Houma, but no, there's a town in Northern Louisiana called Homer, about 50 miles northeast of Shreveport. It's named for the Greek poet, and not the animated everyman.

Thankfully, because that would be a riddle wrapped in an Odyssey.

Can Ward single-handedly kept VT in the game with three terrible turnovers but gets the award for eventually winning because Miami or something.

Small rant here, but I genuinely don’t get why “The U is Back” gets thrown around every season ad nauseam until Miami blows it by week 8. It hasn’t been The U in over 20 freakin’ years. It’s like they’re getting paid specifically by a Miami propaganda machine. Is it because ESPN owns the rights to the ACC so thinks it’s in its interest? It’s just so weird to me that they get more hype for less production than other teams that have been in the wilderness like USC or Tennessee or even Auburn. And it’s a relatively modest sized private school! This isn’t USC we’re talking about with 20k+ undergrad

For those who don’t look at front page check out the video the football media team produced of the Carolina win. As one twitter responder showed it will make you ready to run through a brick wall. Really good stuff.

Earlier today Duke Football posted a 360-degree video of the Wallace Wade fans during the team's entrance on Saturday:

On a desktop, you can use your mouse to move the picture around and even see the fans behind you. On a phone, from what I can tell, you get a kind of panoramic view but not much more.

Great article at Yahoo Sports about Manny Diaz and undefeated Duke.

I didn't really follow what happened with him at Miami so that part was interesting to me.

Thanks, great read. And useful for those who are concerned that Duke is not prepared for whatever conference realignments may come. I thought King’s statements were very interesting.

I love how that article is much more than just a praise piece on Diaz. Here's a great quote from deeper down in the writing.

“I straight up asked President (Vincent) Price in a one-on-one interview,” Diaz said. “What if this happens and that … is Duke committed to stay at the highest level of college athletics? He looked me dead in the eye, ‘Duke is absolutely committed to compete at the highest level of football.’’

That’s echoed too by King.

“We do not want to be left out. We feel like we are putting in the investment, whether resources or people or facilities, etc.,” King said. “We want to make sure our program is in the next iteration, whatever it is. We are in a good position right now. Not sure you could have said that 5-10 years ago. We will be attractive. We’ll be able to go in with that next group of schools, whoever they are and break off.”

Love the fire with the run-out. We should really try to make some sort of chant as part of the entrance and make that an even more meaningful element of the gameday experience to pump people up. Either a recurring song that gets the fans hyped (that can be “our” song, like Michigan fans have with Mr. Brightside) or some sort of united D-U-K-E by the fans (like the C-L-E-M-S-O-N that they shout when the players hit the field off the hill)

Too much money has been spent in the last 15 years or so and we're too far down the road to turn back now. Just a question of whether Duke can continue to compete at a high enough level to keep everyone happy (and, needless to say, I don't ever see Duke consistently playing at the same level as the big football powerhouses). But who knows what the landscape will look like 10 years from now or even 5 years?

The notion of watching Nan ring the victory bell makes me chuckle. I have it on very good authority how much of a boost it was when Brodhead took over. He liked football. Nan, not so much. (I also remember when Nan foolishly thought that being President put her in charge of Coach K. Ha. )
