Duke Football 2024

As you say, Bob...

LET'S GO DUKE! Too early to draw many conclusions regarding our Blue Devils, but Maalik Murphy throws a powerful pass that will negate some of the swirly wind issues, at least on short to medium tosses.

We’re 2-0 baby! And 26 points seems to be our magic (winning) number!

let's hope the UCONN Huskies are more compliant than the NIU (heroic) Huskies. Have not seen a line on the game yet, would expect Duke to be favorites somewhere in the high teens area...

Recognizing another thread is coming soon, it's really hard to tell anything about Ex-Con. They've been on both sides of the woodshed with Maryland and Merrimack. (Monitor is not on the schedule.) Similarly, I'm not sure what to think of Duke. 129 rushing against P5 can get you a win with error-free passing and good defense, but that game might have been the oddball in Duke's favor that you get now and then.

So, how are we feeling on the Maalik Murphy vs Riley Leonard polls after this weekend?
Murphy has shown signs of settling in....his performance in OT was just terrific...still lots of improvement to be had (missing a wide open Moore in the end zone in regulation time hurt)...a lot will depend upon how well the running game develops...I have hopes we'll continue to improve vs a very mediocre UCONN team...as far as Riley is concerned, he's on his own where the grass was said to be greener. Ha.

I will limit my comments to Maalik Murphy. His arm talent is impressive. He made the 2OT TD pass to Eli Pancol look easy but that cross field pass is a hard throw. Additional practice and game action should help with him and the receivers being in sync. Overall, I’m happy with our QB situation.

Bookmakersreview has it Duke -16.5. Good guess

Interestingly enough, I read a post game quote (can't remember where), in which Jordan said he should've caught that pass. Now, I've got to believe he was covering for his quarterback there in simply taking the blame. Make whatever you want of that, but I thought it was interesting at least. I thought it was a pretty uncatchable pass but except for neighborhood "games", I've never played football...so what do I know? I'm pretty excited in regard to what I've seen from Mr. Murphy so far in regard to the passing department at least. I would like to see him become more effective at running the ball, but that's probably unlikely at this point since it hasn't happened yet. Hopefully the offensive line starts to gel with our running backs reaping the benefit. If one of these things can happen I believe we could surprise an opponent or two, and there's nothing like the sweet taste of an upset win.

The best QB Duke ever had, measured by points per meaningful snap, was Ken Hull.

He was Dilweg’s backup in 1988. Most of his snaps were in garbage time. But in the N.C. State game, which ended in a tie (bad call helped State tie it), Dilweg got banged up, and Hull came in. He ran for a TD. Then he passed for a two-point conversion (I think it was Clarkson Hines).

Dilweg returned on the next possession.

He’s basically the Baker Perry of Duke football.

I think Murphy is doing alright given his newness to the team and his WRs. II still think he needs elite targets to be successful, or at least maximize his skill set. We're not going to really know how either guy stacks up till the end of the season. Honestly, if I had the choice between the two, I'd go with Leonard over Murphy for one simple reason. Duke has been a read option team for over a decade. Our current offensive players were recruited with that offense in mind. We don't have the WRs that are able to catch a pass 20+ out. They are very good at catching a pass around 12-15 yards and then running for additional gain. Thats something leonard was good at making happen while he scrambled arouund making the defense collapse. Murphy is the better passing QB, no question, and he's probably the better pro prospect. But having the fastest sportscar isn't the best if you have it fitted for economy tires.
On the ND side of things, I don't know that they've ever have had a read option QB. Hartman was a passer through and through and he came a slow mesh style offense. Prior to that, maybe Deshone Kiser? I don't think they've had a ton of QBs where running was a threat, let alone the best option. Part of Leonards issues from the two game's Ive seen is he doesn't seem to be on the same page with his receivers, and they and the ball often end up in different places.
That ND schedule that looked like a cake walk now looks a lot tougher, and 3-4 more losses is not unreasonable. Whats Leonard's eligibility status after this year? Does he get a covid bonus year? I know he started 1 game in 2021, was the starter for all of 22, half of 2023, now 2024. Its going to be real interesting to see what happens this season if he continues to struggle or loses his starting job. If he is having that bad a year, then he is not going league and his shot at ND is done. Thats going to leave him (maybe) with 1 year of eligibility left.
