Duke 72, Kentucky 77 Post Game Thread

Agree with folks here that Scheyer not making adjustments really hurt us. Could very well start the season 4-4. Very disappointed with this one.
We are a young team but losing to Wofford, KS and AZ doesn’t feel like a good parlay. They are good teams but so are we and we will show up.

Saying the team missed shots feels lame and oversimplifying. Sometimes you miss shots. Sometimes refs are inconsistent. Sometimes defenses are overaggressive.

You have to adjust. You have to win games in different ways. We have the team that can do those things. It's early in the season, so I'm not gonna lose sleep. But watching the offense (and defense) play like we did was not simply about *missing shots*. We were missing a lot more than shot [in the last 10 minutes].

I'm assuming Sion had a dislocated shoulder? Oh, and the play where he was injured should have been an offensive foul. The pick was illegal.

Hurts that ManMan wasn't able to play more either. I mean, when you only go 8 deep and lose 2, it's gonna be a tough second half. Especially with the way the officials swallowed their whistles and let UK play rugby.

Ton of missed 3's. Too many missed FT's. Too many careless (or perhaps tired) turnovers late. Too many key players out due to injury. Too many silly 3's by the other team. Kon was so off it was really tough to watch. Proctor had a great first half, but kinda disappeared offensively when we needed him in the second half. Same with Foster.

The game actually turned a bit in the first half after Pope whined to the officials and suddenly Duke got multiple whistles against them in the last 5 or so minutes that kept UK in it. And many of them were weak calls that took Flagg and ManMan out of the game for extended minutes in that first half.

So much more I could write. But I actually agree with Scott that in spite of all those things going against us, we still were right in it to the end. I'm still bullish on this Duke team.

And for those calling for Scheyer. He's a K disciple. Coach K would call ISO for his best player every time in the end a la RJ 2019 (although it should have been Zion... harrumph).
What does that mean, a K disciple? Do you really think all Jon asks himself is, "What would K do?" God I hope not.

Even putting aside the last two possessions, the offense in the second half just wasn't flowing. In the first we had multiple guys getting to the rim, so even though we weren't hitting from three we still had the lead. We got away from that in the second, UK made adjustments and we didn't counter.

Also, it will get overlooked because we lost but Flagg's defense all game was tremendous. He made so many great individual plays.

We played an 8 man rotation that went to 6 after injuries and in November. We’re on pace for a 4 man rotation 😂. For all the talk about the depth and the shooters we have on the bench there wasn’t a time to try subbing Kon who was ice cold for one of our other shooters for a spark?

Flagg played amazing, I don’t blame him at all for the last two possessions he shouldn’t t have to be there. Where was Proctor or Foster??

And there were times I didn’t like it then. Let’s take all the dimensions and abilities of guys who can score and reduce it to just one or two options. No I can’t go with that. Not on consecutive series (maybe it was just two but seemed a lot t more.)

That neither team was in the bonus until 2:01 left was astonishing. Refs don't usually give up on "freedom of motion" until sometime in December!

Each team had 3 fouls deep into the 2nd half which was a joke watching the game. That both ended up in the bonus because of a late flurry of calls is an even poorer reflection on the officiating, which remains far more amateur than the play.

Disappointing loss. We are going into year 3 and our offense still isn't good. I don't care about where we finished last year. We have way too many lapses and dry spells.

Much like the later Coach K years, when the other team adjusted to what was working on offense, we responded with ISO ball. It resulted in losses then and now. Jon has to figure out how to counter adjustments on the offensive end to be a legitimate top coach. Defensively I think he's shown lots of promise and results, offensively not so much.

Tough game – those last two minutes really showed our youth. Hard to believe they missed the foul call on that moving screen that injured Sion. I would’ve thought Bilas would be all over that missed call since he likes to whine so much. Lol
Don't get me started on that ****** Bilas. He hacked me off less than 2 minutes into the game when Cooper made a great drive for 2 and Bilas says, "He got away with a hook." I don't give a flip what anyone else thinks. Jay just does it subconsciously at this point. He never made an issue out of several questionable no-calls UK got away with. But he has to say something when it's Duke. It's undeniable.

We wilted in the 2nd half and were the cliche "young" team in the clutch.

However, it felt like we were the better team and should have won this game had we hit a couple open 3's and/or hit our free throws.

Alot of places to improve upon.

A major gripe is our players cramping up? Was that both Sion AND Khaman both having issues during the game?

We need to stamp that out quick.

Three takeaways, and they are mostly about us, not about the team

1) It's the third game of the season and the negativity in the game chat and in here is unbelievable. I know I have contributed my share over the years and I pledge to be better. But, for pete's sake, IT'S THE THIRD GAME OF THE SEASON.

2) Going into tonight, we clearly had a solid 8 man rotation. Sion gets hurt, Maluach get cramps, and people are griping at Scheyer for not putting Evans and Harris. I mean, come on. When have we had solid 8-man rotation established this early in the season. Ever.

3) Jay Bilas is a member in good standing of The Brotherhood and has done a lot for the program. I also can not ever listen to him announce a Duke game ever again.

Hoping Sion is ok. I suspect a separated AC joint, which could put him out for awhile (many weeks).

Really hoping it’s not that.

I’m worried it may be an AC joint injury )separated shoulder). If that’s what it is, then depending on severity- a couple weeks to a couple months)

You may be right, but it looked like an AC sprain/separated shoulder to me (separated shoulder sounds so much worse than what it really is)

Eh. Better team lost. If not for some absolutely wild 3 point shooting variance, we win fairly easily. Also we lost 2 guys to injury and had some bad bounces on out of bounds plays. Credit to UK for making plays late, but if we play like this all year we'll win a lot of games.

That's not to say there aren't concerns. I thought we were great for about 25-30 minutes, but poor down the stretch. We got rattled, and Jon didn't have the answer. It didn't quite feel like the elite eight game, but somewhat similar. I think Jon may have pushed Kon too hard, and he was clearly gassed. Leaving Maluach to mark Carr when they went small was a mistake. We didn't have a great plan for the last two possessions. If we were just going to run Cooper ISO, why bit hold it to the end of the shot clock?

Our freshmen sure looked like freshmen late. Kon inexplicably didn't call time out, leading to a bad turnover (he also did this in the 1st half but got away with it). Cooper had 3 TOs late and the failed block out. Good learning experiences for our guys.
