Duke 72, Kentucky 77 Post Game Thread

Let’s be clear what we just watched. In a game where we shot about as poorly as we possibly could, where we lost Sion after he was playing great, where Man Man was in and out, and where the refs let it become a football game in the second half… we lost an incredibly close game we still should’ve won.

Yes, we showed our youth at times, especially down the stretch. Cooper is going to stew about those last few possessions, for sure. But talented young Duke teams of the recent past would’ve gotten the doors blown off them by good teams when they shot this poorly. This Duke team still should’ve won the game.

This stings because it’s Kentucky. If this was to a random Top 20 team in the non-conference we’re shaking this off as an explainable early season loss.

I, for one, am still incredibly excited by what these young men can do.

I mean, yeah. I guess.

Pretty disappointed that Scheyer couldn't settle the team down for the entire last ~10 mins of the game. Anyone with eyes could see we were rattled. We stopped communicating on defense and stopped running offense.

For an off-season where we were supposed to be loading up to get "older" and avoid getting "knocked back", we certainly seemed to be young and get, well, knocked back.

Disappointed we couldn't adjust. Mainly on the staff, IMO.

A lot to be excited about.

But…
Scheyer has struggled mightily in late game situations. Why not have a big man on the inbounder? Why not run an actual play with 26 seconds coming out of a timeout?

And I’m sure cooper will learn a lot from this one. A few awful turnovers and forgetting to box out late. Cancels out what had been a very strong night for him

Onto the next one.

My expectations are lowered a good amount after this one. I thought this team had the talent to be like 2019, but our last 10 minutes were not good.

Disappointed we did not have better plays drawn up in the last two minutes.

Oh I love these early season slugfests. You're 2 best players are an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old. And you shot terribly. But you competed and this is the type of game that you have to play to get better. I love this stuff.

I’m not going to lose sleep over a hard fought loss to a good team, but where were our guards down the stretch? Proctor and foster might as well not have played in the second half. Part of that is on Jon: everyone in the chat melting over cooper. Maybe someone besides the 17 year old with the team on his shoulders should have the ball in their hands and make a play?

Look 4/23 from 3 is really all that needs to be said but man, Flagg seems to be the only one who came out of the locker room in the second half…including Scheyer. Head scratching timeout there at the end.

Flagg played amazing all game but made poor decisions on those last two possessions. UK knew he was getting the ball and just collapsed on him while our other players watched. Despite that, we still showed the potential of what we can be if we hit more open shots, run better offense in crunch time, and can stay healthy.

Maluach going out combined with Brown being in foul trouble really hurt. Our rotations were thrown off and everyone was gassed in the end. Proctor had a great first half but both he and Foster were no-shows in the second and that was probably the biggest reason for the loss. Hope Sion is ok.

Tough loss. Duke matched their physically well. Can't blame Flagg on the ending, he was the only one who was scoring. Play call was fine. Flagg in the middle of the floor to operate. He was scoring on those all night. Just a poor handle on the ball. The two starting guards were non factors in the 2nd half.

The staff didn’t miss all those shots.

The two injuries had a huge impact, and we couldn’t shoot from 3. Shocked that Cooper fell apart at the end after he played brilliantly for the rest of the game. As long as Sion isn’t badly hurt, we’re fine. Would have liked some more offensive creativity down the stretch but I can’t blame Scheyer for rolling with Coop.
