Duke 72, Kentucky 77 Post Game Thread

Feels like we went away from what was working. Too much Flagg iso and putrid ball movement in the second half. Uk was in the passing lanes more but we couldn’t adjust. Caleb had a rough night. I don’t expect him to miss 471 wide open threes going forward. I think Jon still has a lot to learn in-game. He the best team builder in the country and he pre-games at an elite level. He got out-coached tonight down the stretch. Also, refs were kinda inconsistent. Second half was called really loosely and that benefited UK.

We withstood the football game better than we have in tournaments past and this is game 3. We'll be better at it as the team matures. Also the football game took out 2 of our better physical players. We still had every chance to win. We do need that dog that will come in and drop elbows when the other team is getting too close to the line.

I hated our ending sequence: take our last time out to call a basic iso for Coop whose dribble gets away from him.coomit a shooting foul even though we had a foul to give. Two upperclassman guards then actively avoid bringing the ball up in favor of Coop (see the first play) whose dribble gets away from him.

Tough loss. Duke matched their physically well. Can't blame Flagg on the ending, he was the only one who was scoring. Play call was fine. Flagg in the middle of the floor to operate. He was scoring on those all night. Just a poor handle on the ball. The two starting guards were non factors in the 2nd half.
Flagg with the ball in his hands was the right call. His four teammates standing and watching him was not. Really frustrating to see Proctor and Foster disappear in the second half. Kon's shooting was off but at least made a lot of other plays on both sides of the ball.

I'm actually more confident in this team after this game honestly as long as Sion isn't seriously hurt. We couldn't shoot, didn't execute well, played hero ball the last few possessions and still had a chance to win. I like our chances against the upcoming gauntlet of zona, Kansas and Auburn as long as man man and Sion are back. And not having foster shoot 3s. Kneuppel shot poorly but I don't expect that to repeat often.

Need more offensive options. Foster and Procter need to be focus of the offense more
I don’t wanna be critical of Scheyer at this point in season. I assume there are other considerations that are not apparent to me, but I don’t quite understand the decision to have so many consecutive series of Flagg basically going one on one from the top of the key. There’s a lot of talent on this team and despite Flaggs many gifts making it so obvious as to what we were going to do seems like a bad idea. Foster had a bad game and Proctor seem to get deemphasized and put in too many off ball situations after having an outstanding first half.

Fluke shooting game from Duke on the 3-point line. Two second half injuries. Still lost the game on the final possessions. Would love to win ugly like this, but it’s a fluke game overall and it’s November. Duke is fine. Can’t wait to see how Cooper’s turnovers on the last two possessions motivated him to be even better the rest of the season. Maybe this loss will turn out to be a blessing.

You don't want defenders moving around with the chance to steal it from the blind side though. Flagg can't turn it over there and it's at least a good shot from 5-10 feet away.

And for those calling for Scheyer. He's a K disciple. Coach K would call ISO for his best player every time in the end a la RJ 2019 (although it should have been Zion... harrumph).

My main takeaway is that Flagg is 17. Remember how mediocre Tatum was until Mid-January of his only season? Also, K2 may be an offensive savant, but he can’t take so many shots against stout defenders. Proctor needed more looks.

I feel very much the opposite after this one. I know we had a really bad shooting night, but this one should have been the easiest of our ranked opponents this month. We should get better, but we are not as good as I thought. I can easily see us starting the season with 4 wins and 4 losses.

Great game. Flagg was incredible although he was trying to do too much at the end. I’m really psyched for this team. We shot horribly but still competed against a very tough team. I tip my hat to Kentucky. They played really hard and locked us down in the second half.
