DBR Chat is Open!

You bring up a really good point, Larry. Why not have a chat open all the time?

...

We turn the chats on for the games so we don't have to work so hard to moderate the in-game thread, which sometimes gets VERY heated, especially with people posting while impaired.
This is the meat of it. In-game threads and chat in-game are some of the least-pleasant parts of our community.

This last game chat seemed pretty good to me… considering all of the gaffs and miscues. I would even consider temporarily closing the game thread for the duration of the game and only use the chat… as devil84 said, easy to delete the chat once the game is over and not let the in-game comments linger online “forever”.

For basketball, there’s a pre-game thread which becomes the in-game thread, then a post-game thread. So I’m saying to close the pre-game thread when the game starts, and only use chat for in-game comments. Game ends… open a post-game thread.

Not a bad idea. Except that some of us on mobile have difficulties with chat. Maybe not with the new format.

It seemed like posters in the chat were pretty well-behaved considering the many easy targets for critical hot takes. Maybe the embedded format discourages emotional outbursts. Is so, I agree that the in-game chat could make the in-game thread unnecessary. That might change over time.

Some games are better than others. Generally speaking, behavior is good in August/September as we get back into the swing of games and our expectations get progressively emotional as the football season progresses and basketball season starts. By tourney time, expectations are wildly unmanageable within a game and we don't always remember that what we shout at the TV may not need to be shouted in the chat (especially if copious quantities of alcohol are involved).

Note: getting progressively emotional can mean both amazingly awesome euphoria or extreme disappointment/anger. "Emotional" doesn't always mean "bad." Winning helps A LOT to keep chats entertaining and fun.

On the other hand, would it be better/easier to monitor only the in-game chat, as opposed to monitoring both the in-game thread and in-game chat?

I do like the idea that the entire chat can be deleted after the game, but the in-game thread could be there "forever"... especially if the in-game thread starts to get... weird.

Not being a mod, I have no idea about how stressful it must be to follow and track these things... good job to you all.

Do you see the chat window at the top of the EK forum? If so, do you see a box below the chat discussion that says "Enter your message..."?

If not, can you try a different browser with no plugins installed?

If yes, what happens if you type a message there and press enter?
