I wouldn't mind if there was a DBR Chat (only when you select the page) that is open all the time. There's enough interesting Duke sports games that there might be kindred fans. Why should the DBR Chat only be for times when there is a Football or MBB game? I hear bits are almost free.

You bring up a really good point, Larry. Why not have a chat open all the time?
There are several reasons why. One is traffic. Bits are almost free, but these chat boxes can sometimes use a lot more computing power than a regular message board. To oversimplify it a bit, service providers charge by how much computing power is used. Turning this bunch loose on a chat would cost a fortune!
Another reason is keeping conversations on-topic. Can you imagine a chat room that has a few people talking about minutes, a few others discussing the merits of cinder blocks as a unit of measurement, some asking why football isn't talked about more, puns abound, and have politics involved? It's a moderation nightmare, people would be complaining and combative, and there'd be minimal sense of order (moderators see all the reported posts -- we KNOW this will happen!). AND it'd cost us a fortune in extra computing power!
Third is that the message-board format suits this kind of community. You can have near-real-time conversations in threads that have a topic. Readers can view or ignore topics that interest them (or not). Moderators can delete offending posts without deleing the entire thread. And we have a whole archive of all the conversations. Chats are a lot more ephemeral (which is sometimes a REALLY good thing) but it makes it really hard to moderate. REALLY hard. The tools to manage posts on a chat are much less robust than the forum system.
We turn the chats on for the games so we don't have to work so hard to moderate the in-game thread, which sometimes gets VERY heated, especially with people posting while impaired. A few hours of a chat that is naturally focused on a single topic and the contents can be deleted at the end of the night is preferable. We can let people can vent a little more (it's still moderated, y'all!) with a bit more relaxed standards allows the moderators to both participate in the in-game discussion and watch the game, which satisfies both posters and mods. Games that aren't going well can be awful for mods because we have to deal with so many infractions and removing posts on the in-game thread that we don't get to watch the game. We'll just delete the chat at the end of the evening and no rival bulletin boards or sports media outlets can check after the game to find any fodder to slam Duke fans for what might have been said during the heat of the game (how many of you wander over to IC for schadenfreude?!).
If there's interest, I think we'd be amenable to opening it for soccer, lacrosse, or any other Duke sports or related events. We can find another location for the chat, instead of at the top of the EK Board for sports or events with a more limited interest.
And finally, if you're having trouble with the chat -- PLEASE POST! You're likely not the only one and the only way we'll know there's a problem is if you tell us. I assume that if there's a lot of people in the discussion that everyone can see it and join. Let me know if this isn't correct!
