CFB Coaching Carousel 2024-25

Carolina was quick to announce how they are the only P4 school with an opening, so everyone will be clamoring for an interview. That statement of course was silly, (but hey, it's Bubba) and now it's proven false.

Purdue opens up a job as Ryan Walters gets the boot after only 2 seasons. Turns out, not winning in conference at all isn't great for job security.

There will be more comings and goings, so UNC will simply be a face in the crowd.

I know this is blasphemy, but I think this age of transfers and NIL is perfect for a quick UNC rebuild. You get a Deion Sanders type who can bring instant attention and rile up the boosters (Jeff Saturday?) and they could be a CFP contender in a season or two

Only if the bucks are there.
You're probably right. MTHN (My Tar Heel Neighbor) doesn't see boosters shelling out big dollars for the football program either.

I wouldn't say "sleeping giant," but the alumni base and footprint suggest to me some pretty significant opportunities.

But also - history certainly doesn't look promising.

You are not wrong.....that said, the NCSU cash infusion totally bombed this year. Now that was a cash infusion into players.....but do get a big name coach you're gonna need a big NIL budget. Buyer beware. Jordan Waters didn't have much of a year, KC Concepcion was a big disappointment this year, and now his brother is out of the NCSU recruiting class. Likely DD on the hot seat....be interesting to see how long fans at UNC and NCSU pony up for NIL....at some point they'll realize that whatever they do. the SEC and Big Ten schools can do more of it, period. Be interested to see how it impacts the coaching search.

KC is in the portal as of today

That's gonna put a crimp in the Pack's NIL donations I would predict. (to take this out further, while there's a rush of new fans and interest due to NIL, realignment, and gambling......the NIL donors getting burned like this are going to cause that momentum to reverse at many schools....that's my 60-40 prediction......as in 60% confident.

The Portal adds emphasis on how well you evaluate the players. Manny did an excellent job. Doeren did not. Mark Pope at UK did an excellent job, maybe the best in the country. Jon appears to have done a good to excellent job. The jury is still partially out on that. Just another part of judging coaching ability that we didn’t have three years ago.

Actually I would say if you have a big NIL budget that evaluating players is an area where you have some room to screw up. And keep in mind, DD's problem is not evaluating players....KC and Jordan are proven good players....the problems lie elsewhere. Like maybe a 19 year old with a new big contract loses motivation and drive? Or there is a constant thread of distrust and resentment running through lockerooms full of teenagers.......etc. And BB is a whole different thing......

DD still arguing to keep his job…
“Beating Carolina matters more than winning a game to get bowl-eligible to me,” N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said. “That may sound weird, but when I got hired, they didn’t say, ‘Win six and get to a bowl.’ They said, ‘Whatever you do, beat Carolina.’ And we did that. Four years in a row. That means a lot to me. That’s the reason I haven’t been able to wear blue for 12 years. For real.“

I think it was in the ACC Football Week 14 thread where someone mentioned that Mack's firing made UNC the first "big opening" in college football, and a small debate ensued as to whether or not UNC constitutes a 'big' opening. In my opinion, this piece from Andrew Carter at the N&O sums the situation up perfectly. For the TLDR among us, some key snippets:

"The old cliche, the origins of which are sketchy and debatable, is that UNC is a football “sleeping giant.” And maybe it made sense to make such a claim 30 years ago. Now, though, it just sounds absurd. UNC isn’t some dormant power in waiting. To use another tired phrase, UNC simply is what it is in football: mediocre, with the chance for more or less in any given season."

"Here are the facts: Carolina has not won the ACC since 1980. In the past 25 years, it has finished as a ranked team exactly twice."

"Because what, exactly, do these disgruntled fans think UNC has ever been in football? ... This is UNC, which has two fewer ACC championships than Duke and N.C. State and four fewer than Maryland, which hasn’t even been in the conference for a decade now."

I agree with Carter's thesis.
