2024 Olympics - General commentary

So the CAS has now ruled that Jordan Chilesā€™ inquiry for her score came late (1 minute 4 seconds instead of 1 minute) and they are taking her bronze medal. This is going to get ugly. Thats a huge BS move.

Apparently, USA Gymnastics is now saying, "Okay, so you want to go the legalistic route..." (link)

The US is now appealing that decision and USA Gymnastics announced Sunday that it has submitted additional evidence to CAS as part of the effort to have gymnast Chilesā€™ medal reinstated. The organization said it has video evidence ā€œconclusively establishing that Head Coach Cecile Landiā€™s request to file an inquiry was submitted 47 seconds after the publishing of the score, within the 1-minute deadline required by FIG rule.ā€

The thing that's kinda crazy is every gymnast has two minutes (or even more, they have until the next gymnast's routine starts) to appeal EXCEPT for the last one only gets one minute. And Jordan just happened to be last. The officials there in person at the time took the appeal as valid, reassessed, and updated scores. And then they change it several days later? That's be equivalent to an NFL replay review on the final play, the refs make a determination during the game that reversed the on field decision, the outcome is then decided and the game is over. But then several days later another body say the refs shouldn't have overturned it and changes the outcome of the winner. That'd be totally crazy. Especially because they're not saying they determined the wrong outcome, but rather there was a 4-second timing difference. It'd be different if the officials at the time of the competition said "sorry, this appeal came late and we can't reassess." But that's not what happened.

And now USA gymnastics says it has video evidence that the appeal was submitted in 47 seconds: https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...jordan-chiles-bronze-medal-video/74761100007/

The gymnastics issue is crazy.
1) the Romanians seemed quite upset about the emotional toll on their gymnast, since she thought she won bronze for a couple minutes and had already started celebrating. But that is their own faultā€¦they had also used the challenge system for one of their gymnasts, although their challenge (inquiry) was denied. They should never have let her celebrate until the results were official.
2) ā€œ4 seconds lateā€ seems to be a somewhat convenient excuse to solve the problem with the Romanians. Is there a timer at the desk (like in a chess match) or are they working on the gymnast officialsā€™ version of ā€œstoppage time.ā€ And now it seems that maybe whatever clock they were using was not actually accurate, since the US claims to have evidence that the inquery was submitted in less than 60 seconds.
3) as others have said, the goal should be to get it right. Clearly the officials made an error in their original scoring of Jordanā€™s routine and they should want to award the medal to the one who deserves it.

If in fact the inquiry was late, that could be a reason to award two bronze medals. IMO it is wrong to ask for a medal earned to be returned. But it seems like Jordan is the one who deserved the bronze, and the inquiry was accepted and ruled upon by the judges, so I think she deserves the bronze, period. And now, if the inquiry was submitted in under 1 minute, there should be no dispute.

This is just bonkers to me. I still don't understand why the Romanian gymnast whose appeal was denied didn't have the deduction removed. Video seemed to pretty clearly show that she didn't actually step out of bounds. Somehow she has ended up being the one person who has no shot at ending up with a medal, when granting her appeal would have given her a score the others couldn't touch.

So many 4 second OPK honeymoon jokes, so little time...

I have always strongly preferred sports where the outcome was determined by finishing first, scoring the most points, etc. We all know that refs can still have a huge influence in one of these types of events as well, but the result still almost always feels well decided. In this Olympics I finally came around to gymnastics a bit, as I really liked the members of the men's and women's teams for the US. This whole situation is really making me rethink that.

They did not appeal it during the meet. So while the out of bounds penalty was incorrect, they called it out well after the medals were handed out. Jordan Chiles coaches, on the other hand, appealed within 47 seconds or 1 minute 4 seconds depending on who you ask. If the prior 4th place person appealed during the timeframe, she likely would also have been granted the correction. It's like a coaches challenge. You can't throw the flag on a play after the game is over.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, it's past time to retire before you end up doing PBS fundraisers. Your guitarist is bald, and your lead singer is wearing a walking boot. Having been neutral on them from the start, it pains me to type this as there hasn't been much good to replace them for a long time.

Bassist and not bald. Heā€™s got the Costanza and takes the alternative route. And Kiedis has been in that boot for months, while on tour and still running and hopping around stages. In 15 years I hope to be that active. Still I probably wouldnā€™t have picked them for this unless the played one of their California themed songs.

I havenā€™t been that into them but Californication is such a brilliant song

This would be great news...at this point, just give all 3 a bronze medal and be done with it.

"The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted," USA Gymnastics said in its statement.

"The video footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunalā€™s decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it."

The Romanians did appeal it (Maneca-Voineaā€™s OOB penalty) immediately after her routine, but they were denied. They then included it as part of their post-competition appeal up the chain. CAS denied that part while ruling in their favor on Chiles.

Hopefully the 47 sec ā€œvideo evidenceā€ is tight AND CAS agrees to look at the US appeal of the appeal.
