2024 Olympics - General commentary

The Summer Olympics is coming up at the end of July.

I think it is a good idea to foment and centralize all things Olympics in a thread.

Since we are just over a month away from the big O, that means qualifying for the team is happening now, if it hasn't already occurred.

I was watching the Swimming Team qualifying and (some) finals. I noticed a Duke woman qualified for the Final of the 200 meter breaststroke (on NBC at 8pm tonight).

I found this article indicating the Duke contingent at the swimming and diving trials:
https://goduke.com/news/2024/6/11/swimming-diving-blue-devils-primed-for-us-olympic-trials.aspx

There are other present and former Duke athletes competing in the olympics or attempting to qualify.

Jason Tatum has been selected to the Men's Basketball Team (does Grant Hill count as the team picker??).

Chelsea Gray (player) and Kara Lawson (assistant coach) are on the Women's Basketball Team.

Chelsea has not been playing lately in the WNBA; hopefully she can recover from an aching ankle in time to participate.

The track and field team trials starts on Friday and will continue for 10 days:

Lauren Tolbert is participating in the Women's 800 meter trails, thanks to her finals participation in the NCAAs a couple of weeks ago.

Who else?

Unfortunately, there is no Curling in the Summer Olympics; I'll have to find a new favorite sport. Go team Shuster.

^ I like curling, too. Recently my wife and I went to Europe and met a Canadian couple from Manitoba...spent a lot of time with them, and I mentioned how I was fond of curling...turns out the humble husband had won a silver medal several years ago in the world championships...

I presume this silver medalist did not have 2 different shoes :) That's one of the funky things about curling.

The nearest curling place is an hour from here, so no chance to try it. I just don't have the stones.

I see what you did there. Lol

Anyone know if the Olympics are streamable for those of us who have cut the cord or if a Peacock sub will be necessary?

Through the end of June, Peacock is offering a promotion of $19.99 for a year for the ad-supported level. That's $40 off, and the price they usually offer around Black Friday.

I learned recently that Instacart+ subscribers (like myself) get a free ad-supported subscription to Peacock.

Do you know the current promo code? I tried the link and it took me to a webpage that sets forth the terms governing subscriptions using the Code; but it doesn't appear to provide the Code. The only $19.99 Peacock promo I could find with a search was a recent one using the code "STREAMTHEDEAL," but that code has expired as of last week.

Hmm, that's a good question.

The page I linked above was the Offer Terms page from an email I received from Peacock on June 12. I already have a subscription (from Black Friday), so any Peacock link that I click on my desktop (a device that's signed in to Peacock) just takes me to my account.

TV Line mentions the same promo from a June 3 article and explains the sign up process step by step. There's supposed to be a yellow "Get Offer" button when you go to PeacockTV.com -- but I tried my email link and the TV Line link from my phone (a device which is not signed in to Peacock), and I don't see a Get Offer button.

My guess is that the offer has prematurely concluded. Maybe it was too popular? It looks like STREAMTHEDEAL was the code, as it was part of the URL for the Offer Terms page, and it's all I could find in Internet searches as well. The Offer Terms do say that the code would be subject to early termination.

If you want to contact Peacock and try to get the deal anyway, go for it. Assuming that doesn't work, the best option for the Olympics is to pay the regular price of $5.99 per month, signing up sometime before the Games start and canceling before it automatically renews.

Keep in mind that the price goes up to $7.99 per month on July 18 for new customers, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Because the Olympics take place from July 26-August 11, that creates a tiny window from about July 12-17 to sign up at the $5.99 price and cancel once the Games are over.

Peacock also has a military discount of $2.99 per month, requiring a military ID for verification.

(P.S.: I don't work for Peacock. I just wanted to be thorough.)

Thanks for following up. It's unclear to me how much additional Olympics coverage Peacock will provide that isn't already going to be available to us through our Spectrum Cable channel lineup; but the streaming options might be worth subscribing for a month or two, assuming the process for cancelling isn't unduly burdensome. Still, that $19.99 annual subscription would have been a sweet deal.

Lauren Tolbert finished a credible 5th in the 200 m IM. Tremendous effort by her, but alas no Olympics this year.

I used that code yesterday and it worked. It took me a while to get to a screen where I could enter a code though.

I had no trouble getting to the screen with a box for entering the code -- I just clicked on the annual subscription button; but when I entered that code, I got an error message saying that the code had expired.

Congrats to Duke grad Ashley Twichell, 35, Class of 2011, on finishing 3rd in the 1500m free behind the Goat, Katie Ledecki and Katie Grimes, one slot away from making her second* Olympic team.

*She finished 6th in the Open Water 10k at the Tokyo Olympics.

I'm wondering how I can watch South Sudan MBB games other than any they play against the US team.
