Give dude a break....he was more than fine.Brian Oliver, as an announcer, is not good. Perhaps that is why he works for the CW.
Yes, I was coming to say exactly this. Oliver is better than a lot of college basketball announcers.Oliver might not be the most eloquent guy out there, but his comments were cogent and he tried to make a game interesting that got out of hand fairly early. He was not the best or the worst.
I posted this in the pregame thread, but it fits better here. If you don't know the backstory of Brennaman's past, um, error, read this Wikipedia entry, "A Drive into Deep Left Field by Castellanos". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_drive_into_deep_left_field_by_CastellanosYeah I'm more comfortable with Oliver than I am Brennaman.
I mostly do too. I'm not crazy about the assertion that the response to what he did was excessive. It wasn't. But I do believe in redemption once a penalty is paid.I posted this in the pregame thread, but it fits better here. I tend to believe in the possibility of redemption, so I'm hoping Brennaman learned from his mistake.
How to fill air time during a blow out without sounding like it’s a blow out. Not an easy task. CA and so many others fail this miserablyLast night's Miami game. The insufferable Corey Alexander and "WD" Woody Durham. Here was the exchange, and I forget which one said which line.
Announcer 1: (I'm paraphrasing) And looking ahead, the Hurricanes next game, they welcome SMU to Coral Gables.
Announcer 2: That's right. So it doesn't get any easier for Miami!
Ummm yeah. Yes it does. SMU is a fine team and won't be an easy game for Miami. But are you telling me that playing SMU at home isn't an easier game than playing a Duke juggernaut in Cameron?
Just goes to show, again, how so many of these announcers are just automatons. They know a set series of catch phrases and all they're doing is repeating those tired phrases no matter how inappropriate and how flat-out wrong they are. I just still can not ever believe that these kinds of guys (and gals) are really the best, most informed and informative and intelligent commentators on college basketball that can be found. Impossible for me to believe that.
CA fails in so many areas that this one seems insignificant. How to fill air time during a blow out without sounding like it’s a blow out. Not an easy task. CA and so many others fail this miserably
It's called ego.CA seems like a really likable guy. He doesn't seem to understand that viewers are a lot more interested in the basketball game than his stories.
Thanks for bringing this to the board.https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/43439250/beloved-brewers-broadcaster-bob-uecker-dies-age-90
Bob Uecker has passed. He didn't cover hoops, but he was great. Not just as an announcer, but many know him from his "Major League" roles or his Miller Lite commercials. Since this thread subject doesn't include "basketball", I wanted to pay homage. Hope he's in the front row now.
