2024-25 Announcer Thread

For the Pitt game, we get CA and his main straight man, OB.

“The straight man’s job is to provide contrast to the more outrageous or comedic elements of the performance, allowing them to stand out and be funnier.”

FWIW we DVR the game and Forward or Pause the DVR to catch up with whatever Dave Shumate is broadcasting at that time. Once sync'd up it usually stays pretty close to Dave's commentary...

Oliver might not be the most eloquent guy out there, but his comments were cogent and he tried to make a game interesting that got out of hand fairly early. He was not the best or the worst.
Yes, I was coming to say exactly this. Oliver is better than a lot of college basketball announcers.

I posted this in the pregame thread, but it fits better here. If you don't know the backstory of Brennaman's past, um, error, read this Wikipedia entry, "A Drive into Deep Left Field by Castellanos". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_drive_into_deep_left_field_by_Castellanos

I tend to believe in the possibility of redemption, so I'm hoping Brennaman learned from his mistake.
I mostly do too. I'm not crazy about the assertion that the response to what he did was excessive. It wasn't. But I do believe in redemption once a penalty is paid.

Don't know where else to put this, but if I had to listen to Al Michaels say, "There he goes," about Lamar taking off one more time, I was going to toss the TV out the window.

Last night's Miami game. The insufferable Corey Alexander and "WD" Woody Durham. Here was the exchange, and I forget which one said which line.

Announcer 1: (I'm paraphrasing) And looking ahead, the Hurricanes next game, they welcome SMU to Coral Gables.
Announcer 2: That's right. So it doesn't get any easier for Miami!

Ummm yeah. Yes it does. SMU is a fine team and won't be an easy game for Miami. But are you telling me that playing SMU at home isn't an easier game than playing a Duke juggernaut in Cameron?

Just goes to show, again, how so many of these announcers are just automatons. They know a set series of catch phrases and all they're doing is repeating those tired phrases no matter how inappropriate and how flat-out wrong they are. I just still can not ever believe that these kinds of guys (and gals) are really the best, most informed and informative and intelligent commentators on college basketball that can be found. Impossible for me to believe that.

How to fill air time during a blow out without sounding like it’s a blow out. Not an easy task. CA and so many others fail this miserably

It also created the legend of the Nick Catellanos home run
