2024-25 Announcer Thread

Saw the Allmans at Cameron on my 20th birthday- my favorite band at my favorite place! Having them in the same discussion with Corey Alexander is to go from the sublime to the ridiculous.

The guy survived cancer 3 times and is important for the game of basketball. Least of my worries. He might not even be with us again ever so maybe just let it go. I also don't like not hearing the ambience of the game so I put up with the annoying commentators but it's probably easier for me since I am not a native speaker so I can tune it out a little easier.

speaking of announcers, this is the week when, due to so many games being played, they make announcers out of guys passed out in the corner of bus stations....folks you've never seen before and are likely to never see again.
That's me. I am available lol

CA is doing the NBA game tonight on ESPN. He is ubiquitous and omnipresent. If I recall, he is actually better at NBA because there is a lot less name dropping.
Yeah, was just flipping around the dial after copious versions of bracketology and came across Cory yakking away about OKC vs MIL.

He is slightly less annoying about the NBA Please assure me that Cory will NOT be doing the NCAA tourney.

I didn’t mind the Dickie V closing speech, but I wish it could have happened after the game was over. ESPN ended the broadcast pretty quickly after the final horn so that probably wasn’t an option, but it would have been better as a signoff than during gameplay.
Definitely. Vitale deserves his time. He's one of the big reasons why college hoops is what it is now. But don't do that when the game is still in limbo. Halftime was the time to do it. I can see many other Duke fans besides me were annoyed, but can you imagine how upset Ville fans probably were? They were trying to get back into the championship game, they didn't to see Vitale crying.

I don't blame Vitale, Angel Reese, O'Brien or even CA (who should take so much blame for so much he says). I blame the producers here. Idiots, they probably have no background in sports. The days of Roone Arledge are now decades old, back when networks cared about the game, not about announcer stories or personalities. I know I sound old, but the new generation of sports producers don't focus on sports. They seem to only use sports as a stepping stone to greater things.

Bill Rafferty I wish wasn’t doing Duke game. Ian Eagle is good as is Grant Hill. I dislike Rafferty’s “puppies ,onions , the kiss and other hackneyed phrases he always uses.
Much better than listening to Cory Alexander or Dave O’Brien

Ironically, Roone Arledge is the primary reason we have the “up close and personal” stories invading game broadcasts, from ABC’s coverage of the Olympics. Probably a different “personalities” than you meant, though (I presume you were talking about the announcer personalities.)

Yes, exactly. Announcer personalities. Which has led us to CA's long-winded stories of his good friends, Bilas' 94 feet, etc.

Different strokes, I guess. I only ever hear Raff in the tournament - I don't watch much in season Big East. I think of him as the voice of big March games, and I find his schtick rather quaint. I'd probably feel differently if I listened to him for more than three weeks.

Raftery is legendary. I think he strikes a great balance between analyzing the game and having fun/not taking himself too seriously. He barely drops his catch phrases at all. He is much more connected to players and coaches than CA but doesn't feel the need to brag about it. I love listening to him during the tournament. Fox actually has some really good announcers (and good games) and I regret not watching them more during the season - out of habit I go straight to ESPN. Believe it or not, there is good basketball played on other channels (and outside the southeast).

Wanna bet that he doesn't say the first team on D starts out with his schtick "man-to-man"?

I respect what he's done, though I'm also kind of done with Raft. But like heyman25 said above, he's better than CA.

I guarantee he does that. Because that is what he does. I wrote "he barely" not "he never". If that is the worst thing he does, he is better than 99% of the other announcers out there. It is one second out of your life. And unlike other announcers, it at least is 100% relevant to the game. I wish I had such tsuris.

And to speak negatively of him on St. Paddy's day of all days!

Cory Alexander won't be doing the NCAA Tournament -- it's not on ESPN -- but he will be doing the NIT, which is.

I looked at the PDF game notes for Georgia Tech's game tomorrow against Jacksonville State (ESPN2), and he's been assigned, along with Rich Hollenberg.
So the other Gamecock fans gonna learn a lot tonite about celebrities. Bet CA best friends with all important people in northeast Florida.
