2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Season General Discussion

I noticed that no one posted about that upset yesterday. I guess when losing is no longer a rare occurrence….. 🤭
I almost went to that game but part of why I didn't was that I assumed Seton Hall would get killed (I'm a lifelong Seton Hall fan). They were giving out cool t-shirts depending on what part of NJ you are from, having a Bon Jovi singalong, and having some kind of a contest with taylor ham and cheese vs. pork roll and cheese (it's a Jersey thing).

Not sure which thread to post this, but I was poking around stats and stumbled on something I found interesting. Auburn clearly has one of the most elite offenses in a long time (according to KenPom), and my perception has been that can be attributed at least in part to their effective scoring from 3-pt range. Here's what I found interesting (and encouraging), which is Duke is making 3-pointers at a higher rate than Auburn, including on more attempts. It's encouraging because we weren't firing on all cylinders from 3pt range earlier in the season.

2024-2025 First 25 games: 3 point shots attempted and pct made

I hate the ACC.

In a year where we have a truly special team, we are kneecapped by the absolutely pitiful state of the ACC. While Auburn is slugging it out with Alabama and Tennessee, we're playing a preseason exhibition schedule, only in conference.

After crushing Cal, Stanford, and UVa, we get this reaction (behind a paywall The Athletic Tournament Bracket Watch):

"The question moving forward continues to be the SEC’s chances of bumping Duke down a line and making No. 1 seed history. Committee chair Bubba Cunningham said “it’s possible” that Duke could be overtaken, and I don’t think that was the product of North Carolina AD bitterness.

If we lose a #1 seed while winning out the season (which is certainly possible), I'll forever hold the ACC responsible for a missed opportunity.

If we win out I think we will be fine. The win over Auburn will be our saving grace. If we lose one and definitely two, it gets a lot hairier.

Too many of the top SEC teams still have to play each other, I think, for Duke to get overtaken.

Alabama still plays @ Tennessee, vs. Florida and @ Auburn. (And has UK and Miss State at home).
Florida, in addition to the trip to Tuscaloosa, also has A&M and Ole Miss in Gainesville.
Tennessee is @ A&M and @ Ole Miss and has Bama coming to Knoxville.
A&M has Tennessee and Auburn at home and goes to UF.
Auburn finishes @UK, @A&M and home with Bama.

Houston seems to be the other team that could make a run for a one seed. They've got home games with Iowa State and Kansas and a trip to Texas Tech left.

This seems like the scenario that gets Duke passed, maybe:

Bama goes 4-1 with a loss to UF.
UF wins out.
Auburn goes 4-1 with a loss to Bama.
Houston wins out the regular season.

And that just gets you to conference tourneys, where Auburn might be looking at UK in the quarters, and Florida and Auburn are looking at Miss State and Ole Miss to get to play one another.

If Duke keeps winning, I don't see how the attrition isn't too much to keep three SEC teams and Houston ahead of us.

There is approximately a 0% chance of us winning out and then NOT getting a #1 seed.

yeah i'm not sure there is a huge risk here.

Gaudy record, gaudy nerd numbers, win over concensus best team....we'd have to take two more losses, IMO to get knocked off the line....and I don't see it happening.

so they had, like, Exit 1 t-shirts, Exit 2 t-shirts, on and on, right? :)

LOL. North Jersey, Central Jersey, and South Jersey. Whether Central Jersey is a "thing" is subject to debate. Given that Seton Hall is in North Jersey (you can get off at 14 or 15W depending on if you are coming from the north or south) I assume those shirts were most popular. North Jersey rules!

Saw a very damning post on the Jayhawks record since landing Hunter Dickinson (just 40-19 overall and 18-14 in Big 12 play). General consensus is that it was a huge mistake for Self to build the team around him.
My memory is that Duke went pretty hard after Dickinson but things cooled down mutually after Mark Williams committed. Was that the case? As good as Dickinson has been, I almost feel like Duke got the better end of the him vs Mark bargain.

ya, the way the state is shaped, the state has kind of a natural waist, north of Philly and south of Princeton...not sure where Central Jersey would fit in.

Dickinson is not a winning player at all. Horrible defender and doesn't contribute anything outside of his personal stats. That's outside of being one of the most unlikable players in the sport. Very thankful he didn't come here, Duke doesn't need more reasons for people to hate us.

Exit 14 is the Newark Airport, the Newark Seaport and Ikea. Coming from the north (Hudson Valley), I would take the Garden State. It also looks to me that the Garden State is how to come from the south (say Philly).
But - it is all irrelevant - almost no one in New York (or Philly) cares at all about Seton Hall sports.

Correct - from the south you would most likely switch to the GSP and there are a few exits you could take depending on knowledge of backroads, desire to avoid tolls, etc. But if for whatever reason you stayed on the Turnpike, you would get off at Exit 14 to take 78 west. From the north there is a decent chance you would come from the Turnpike - depends on exactly where you are coming from. When Seton Hall used to play at the Meadowlands one would take 280 to the Turnpike to get there.

Seton Hall was very popular for a while in the late 80s and 90s, but now they probably generally draw more for the opponent than for their team - I think they don't even open the upper level of the Prudential Center for most games unless they expect a lot of visiting fans.

Sorry for the sidetrack and trip down memory lane. Go Pirates!
