2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Season General Discussion

As I think was discussed upthread, we are very likely to get an SEC team on our #2 line - since they can't match them with the #1 SEC seeds -which will mean no SEC team on our #3 line, making it likely we also get one on our #4 line.

The SEC currently has 9 out of the top 25 teams. Odds we get an SEC team at #2 AND #4? Probably greater than 50%.
I think they can put a 1 and a 2 from the same conference in the same regional if that conference has 5 of the top 8 seeds. Could happen. Probably won’t but possible.

Watching this Kentucky-Tennessee game, it's truly astounding how Tennessee players commit hard, sometimes borderline dirty, fouls constantly on offense and defense, only to have the coaches and fans howl in protest whenever they get whistled.
Toward the end of that game an offensive foul was called on a KY player but before that, the TN player grabbed the KY player around the waist. I just knew the call was going against TN, but I was wrong. I don't see how a competent official could not have seen what happened. Sometimes I believe Barnes has something on the refs. Some people confuse holding, grabbing, hip checking with good defense.

GoDuke!

Saw the exact same thing!

What's the consensus on who to root for tonight, Houston v WV? Alabama v Miss St?
Usually root for higher seed to lose but there is consideration that assuming we take care of business (1 seed) that we wouldn't want to have either Houston or Alabama as the 2 seed in our bracket. Maybe better if they 1 seed in another region.
Realize that in long run we just have to win our games but fun to have rooting interest in other regular season games.

I think Houston ends up as the 4th 1 seed. Bama even with a loss tonight is very well positioned for the #3 overall seed. Hard to imagine any of these teams falling to 6-8 national seed. I got my eyes on Florida, Tennessee and Michigan St./Purdue Big Ten winner as our #2 seed.

Maybe but they've still got quite a difficult schedule ahead of them, which includes among others:

at West Virginia (NET 41)
Texas Tech (14)
Baylor (29)
at Arizona (13)
Iowa St (6)
at Texas Tech (14)
Kansas (8)
at Baylor (29)

They're a very good team don't get me wrong. But thus far, other than the absolute miracle they made happen to beat Kansas the other day, their best win of the season has been BYU (36). Obviously they have a lot of opportunities for quality wins going forward, but they have a lot of work ahead of them to get a #1 seed IMO.

Yeah, Houston is solid but wouldn’t be better than 3rd in the SEC and might be closer to 5th. The halfcourt offense other than offensive rebounds is often not pretty. Not a team you want to play because of the defense but its margin for error is smaller than the very top teams.

Alabama missed 3 free throws in final 30 seconds and Mississippi State had a wide open transition layup to take the lead. Somehow he missed and Alabama escapes.

Illinois is really spitting the bit. After tonight’s loss to Nebraska, which is a Big 10 bottom feeder, they’ve now lost 4 of their last 6 with a heavy schedule still to come. Wish our game with them would have a lot of cache but with the way theyre playing … ugh

Illinois's center has missed the last 3 or 4 games with mono. He's a big part of their game -- 7'1", strong rebounder, and can shoot, including 3s. He's got a crazy BPM of 11. Might be a first round pick. So you can see why Illinois is struggling. When he returns, they'll be strong again, but their resume won't look as good as they are.

I really want to see Iowa State lose, but I just can’t root for Kansas State when they are wearing those uniforms. That is the second least intimidating color a uniform could possibly be.
