The endless pain of the Carolina Panthers - Season 2024

Barely watching, but the few minutes I have tuned in for shows two things.
Bryce Young sucks, and our offensive play calling sucks. (Proven by a 3rd and long when the play called was designed for like three yards.) The team is 0-8 on third downs.

Young is 10/14 on passing. That's pretty good, right?
Well, not if the average yardage is 4 per throw.

When he throws it more than a few yards downfield it goes to the wrong team more often than not.

He’s broken. It’s cruel to keep running him out there.

Panthers have come out saying that Bryce is their guy, because being stupid is the key to success. Andy Dalton is making a nice chunk of change getting to go to sleep at night without worry of being put in to play.

Young had a historically bad day, passing for only 84 yards to tie for the fourth fewest in team history for a quarterback with at least 25 pass attempts.

He became the third player in the past 20 seasons to average 4 or fewer yards per dropback in four straight starts. He has three interceptions and no touchdowns in two starts this season.

Yet when first-year coach Dave Canales was asked who would be his starter next week against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, he didn't hesitate.

"Bryce is our quarterback,'' said the coach who was hired to turn Young around. "We're going to continue to shore and fix the things we need to fundamentally, from a scheme standpoint, all those things.''

Bryce has had a historically bad start to his NFL career. Statistically, he is prob top 3 worst QB in NFL history with as many starts as he has under his belt.

Yet people constantly blame everyone else but him. It’s either the play call, the offensive line, or his weapons. It’s never Bryce’s fault.

Please tell me what I’m missing. He’s short, has a noodle arm, and average athleticism at best. He’s supposed to be an “elite processor”, so when will we see that? Yesterday took one of the worst sacks I’ve ever seen. Chased out of the pocket and gets to the sideline, stands there trying to make a play, had all the time in the world to throw the ball out of bounds, but instead gets lit up.

What is everyone seeing with Bryce that I’m not? The Panthers (or he himself) are scared to death to let him throw the ball rather than 5 yards.

Before you respond, make sure you’ve actually seen him play. I’ve seen every pass of his NFL career. Many of them in person. He’s a DUD

he has many physical attributes that are against his ability to be a QB1 in the NFL.....everyone said his mental agility was off the charts, but i don't see that...

tepper won't admit that he made a mistake...

You’re missing that literally no one is defending him. He’s awful. He got booed at home yesterday. He’s getting completely roasted on Twitter. I don’t know a single person who thinks he’s even a reasonable facsimile of an NFL QB.

All the other stuff about lack of support, terrible system around him can also be true. It’s not one or the other. It’s both.

I've been trying to find it without success, but there was a whole article written in which that play was the premise for proof positive that Young sucks in the NFL.

Unfortunately, everyone in the Panthers locker room is, from Tepper and the coaching staff down. As I showed above, Canales stated right after the game that he's our guy.

Fair enough. Canales is defending him, and I’d contend probably doing him more harm than good by continuing to run him out there to get demolished. His teammates are getting increasingly visibly frustrated with him though. It sounds like Bryce is a nice dude but I’d be shocked if there aren’t a lot of players who’d rather line up with Dalton, even if they don’t say so publicly.

Yup, that was my point about having a better O-line and skill players at Alabama than he has with Carolina. It got him to the first overall draft spot.

Dude won the Heisman, playing against lesser talent (often)* and on a Saban juggernaut team. In front of 100,000 screaming fans. That's a world of difference than playing with the Carolina roster and coaches against clearly better teams in an empty home stadium.

Alabama made him look better than he is. Carolina likely makes him look worse than he could be with a better team. But with an 11-13 TD/INT ratio and few wins to show (2-16 record as a starter), I'm not sure that keeping him out there is beneficial to anyone at this point. It's not like Andy Dalton could do worse. Probably.

* The SEC was still pretty brutal that year. They played five ranked teams, including UGA twice.

When stuff like this happens, my question always is "but what about the Pro Day workouts and the combine?" The Panthers scouts obviously must have seen him a lot in those types of environments -- not just killing Vanderbilt with an NFL team around him at Alabama. At those post season workouts, they had to see him: Could he make the NFL-level throws or not? He had to make them, didn't he?? Or else why on earth would the Panthers (or anyone else) consider drafting him so highly? I get that he's short. There have been other short QBs who have been successful. But the arm strength: how can you not evaluate that correctly?

Tepper had tunnel vision when it came to Bryce. While there have been other short QBs who’ve had success, they’ve been few and far between.

When it comes to arm strength and size, the feeling was among some, that Bryce’s “elite processing” and off script plays would account for his deficiencies. He has yet to show elite processing, off script heroism, arm strength, or really any other NFL translatable skill.

You offer up a great question. How did the scouts or the Panthers get this wrong? I think media bias. Had he had the same stats at Iowa would he have gone number one? His skills fit the profile more of a late round or undrafted prospect. I think playing for Alabama and being a media darling has helped him. People are still making excuses for him when it’s painfully obvious he isn’t the guy.

Look at his last play on Sunday. 4th and 3. No pressure. He jumps to complete a check down to the running back 4 yards in front of him and it gets batted away. Any time you’re jumping to throw the ball without pressure in your face there is a problem. Problem is, he can’t see the field. Hence why he stands on his tiptoes.
