The 2024 Transfer Portal

RJ Davis is scary. I'll reserve judgement on Cad'oh until I see if he can hit a shot. He was 10-53 (18.9%) from three last year and was taken off the court in the second half of their final game because he was such a liability. For comparison, freshman Tre Jones was 27-103 (26.2%), Trevon Duvall was 31-107 (29.0%), and sophomore Mark Mitchell was 11-40 (27.5%). All of them were considered terrible shooters. Cad'oh can distribute and occasionally get to the rim, but he's small and defenders can play off of him. As for Ian Jackson, he's talented but needs the ball in his hands as do the other two guards, and when was the last time a freshman actually made an impact at UNC?

I learned my lesson last year about writing off the CHeats too early, but I see them as a top-20 team. No idea how CBS has them in the top 5.

My thoughts exactly.

I'll also add that while I expect Tyson to continue to be a good shooter, I'm also a bit skeptical that he'll maintain last year's rate now that he's going up against ACC length/athleticism. And Drake Powell will really be a liability in the half-court next year as his offensive game is extremely limited, plus he's a freshman. A lineup with Cadeau, Powell and Trimble is gonna be very problematic for UNC if they get extended minutes.

Wake Forest looks as dangerous as ever with the return of Hunter Sallis and incoming portal additions like Tre'Von Spillers, perhaps the best all-around player from a 27-7 App State team

Spillers, a rising senior, averaged 12.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in his one season with the Mountaineers, while shooting 60.4% from the field. Prior to App State, the 6’7” forward was a NJCAA 1st Team All-American at Moberly Area Community College. He spent his freshman year at USC Salkehatchie.

The Charleston, SC native started 30 of 32 games for the Mountaineers this season, of which he was named KenPom’s MVP 13 times. Spillers scored 15 or more points in 14 games this season, including a 23-point effort against South Alabama on 11-13 shooting.

Spillers recorded double-digit rebounds in 14 games as well, including 16 in a win over Old Dominion. He pulled down five offensive rebounds on five different occasions.

Steve Forbes demonstrates again that he can put together a good team from varied sources.

Forbes always seems to grab interesting portal players. He got a pair of really intriguing freshmen who are now rising sophs -- Ty-Laur Johnson from Louisville, who was 9ppg, and Omaha Biliew from Iowa State. The freshman to soph jump is often significant and these guys could be major players for Wake. Biliew is especially interesting because he was a 5-star recruit -- ranked in everyone's top 15 -- who really struggled in his first year at Iowa State. Forbes has a history of taking kids who were highly touted and faltered and then turning them into what they were expected to be. I would imagine they are hoping Biliew can replace the lost production from Andrew Carr moving to Kentucky -- very different players but Carr's departure opens up a lot of minutes at the 4 for an explosive athlete like Biliew.

If Hurley takes the Lakers job the U.Conn players will be able to enter the transfer portal. There may be a mass exodus. We probably won't be in position to take any of them but I hope some other ACC teams (other than UNC) are.

Yeah, if this comes to pass UNC may get its shot at two guys in Samson Johnson and Tarris Reed who could be ideal fits at the 5 for them. Johnson was a fantastic rebounder and defender as Clingan's backup last year, and played major minutes while Clingan was out while keeping UConn afloat. Meanwhile, Reed's game reminds me of a lesser (probably much lesser) Bacot... he's a very strong defender and rebounder who has a full, strong body. Reed probably has a bit more verticality in his game too, but has minimal polish offensively. Still, if either of those guys make it to the open market, with UNC the biggest name school that still has a clear hole at the 5, there'd be a natural fit.

FWIW, I'm not sure how these guys already being on campus (and I assume registered at UConn) would affect any of this, because UConn has begun posting content from summer practices just like most other schools do.

A final point: if, and again it's still an if, Hurley leaves, you have to feel for Alex Karaban who just left the NBA Draft, where he may have been in the conversation as a late first round pick, for a shot at a three-peat. If he enters the portal, there's an argument to be made that he is if not the top, certainly one of the Top 10, transfers in the whole portal class. A team who gets him would get a heck of a lot better instantly.

UConn has two great candidates in house to take over in Murray and Young. The challenge will be choosing between them - Young is the associate coach but has some legal baggage in his distant past, while Murray is a rising star but on the younger side (though he is a few years older than Scheyer). Though I'm sure players will test the waters, I am guessing that as long as they keep one of those two as coach, there likely won't be too much turnover at this point. Though there will be some interesting conversations.

Good point. If Hurley leaves, the best case scenario from a Duke perspective would be (apologies for another Michigan reference, haha) if UConn follows the blueprint Michigan did when Harbaugh left by quickly hiring a beloved internal candidate. Michigan prevented the exodus of top talent to the portal that many were hoping for. If UConn could do the same that'd be great in terms of preventing our more direct rivals from benefiting.

I'll never understand why DBR members want to provide unsolicited assistance to UNC. Their fans -- the literate ones -- read this board. Earlier this week, in another thread, someone reported that UCF added a 5-star center from 2025 who reclassified to 2024, which is accurate, but gave Nolan Smith co-credit, which is not. (Despite the one rumor from one anonymous social media source, Nolan Smith was not hired as an assistant coach by UCF. Two other people were.) Within 24 hours I read the same misinformation in Inside Carolina.

You're a moderator. Create a sticky thread and call it Hey UNC fans: here's how you beat Duke and then promptly lock it. Then, when the rest of us feel the inexplicable urge to fill the silence with damaging information, we're immediately reminded that we shouldn't. This approach should cut down on our self-inflicted wounds.

Dan Hurley isn't leaving Connecticut, and even if he did, the program would do its best to maintain continuity and keep the threepeat hopes alive. So their players are unlikely to transfer. I'd only worry if Hurley (or the Lakers) demanded his assistant coaches join him, and I don't see that happening. You might think that Bill Murray's son would be a good fit in Hollywood, but I would remind you that Bill Murray himself is not a very Hollywood person.

I could be wrong, but the transfer portal closed a while back to any new entries and I don't think having your coach leave automatically re-opens it. The UConn guys might try to apply for a waiver or something but I am fairly sure they are now bound to UConn whether Hurley remains there or not.

JJ to UConn?

Nope. PDF link: "SAs [student-athletes] receive an extra 30-day time period to enter the Transfer Portal if there is a head coaching change or if aid is canceled."

We just saw this when Wisconsin-Green Bay hired Doug Gottlieb on May 14, two weeks after the standard portal deadline. Two players transferred out within a few days, and others still can before (about) June 14.

It's a shame for U.Conn that Gottleib isn't available to be their head coach.

Whew, I am getting to be a pro at getting stuff wrong. Two in two days... yay for me!

I learn from you every day. Now on I will start every opinion I give with "I could be wrong".

That should give me a way out every time, I think, but I could be wrong.

I get the sentiment here for sure, but something tells me if I'm thinking this and it's actually a good idea, someone on the UNC staff is (unfortunately) probably thinking it too. It's fun to imagine that I'm more in tune with the college basketball landscape than the UNC staff, because that would be embarrassing for them, but unfortunately I bet that's not the case ;)

Counterpoint: you are smarter than they are.

I've been paying close attention to UNC for this transfer portal cycle, and while I can't read the minds of their staff members, I've reached a quite reasonable conclusion that they are NOT thinking about the same things you are. Now, it's entirely possible that there are some people in that camp who have presented intelligent alternatives to address their roster problems, and maybe they're just getting overruled. I don't know, but I feel like I have a pretty good handle on this portal, and I am not interested in helping them.

What they don't know will crush them

From IC: "Yes, it may turn out that Lubin is better at the 5 for us than Aidoo, Omoruyi, Onyenso, ... I think Hubert got the guy and the roster he wanted. We'll play fast and small. Rebounding is less important when every shot is a 40% 3-pointer or a layup at the rim."

Seems they are very happy with their new style and players.
