The 2024 Transfer Portal

Rookie Scale... incorrectly listed Arkansas player Trevon Brazile as all in, but can you blame them? Brazile told ESPN back in April that he was "100 percent into the draft" and has hired an agent. The linked article even said that he would not be entering the transfer portal, but a few weeks later, he made a casual declaration for the portal just before the May 1 deadline. And now he's withdrawn from the draft entirely, and looking for a destination school. What to believe?

After all that, Trevon Brazile is returning to Arkansas.

trevonbrazile.jpg

I would think this move would close the door on Coleman Hawkins going to Arkansas, because (1) he and Brazile would overlap in a frontcourt that also has Jonas Aidoo, Zvonimir Ivisic, and Adou Thiero, and (2) John Calipari has recently said he would not be pursuing more than 8-9 scholarship players, and Brazile is the ninth.

I guess I can start making this a weekly post. Call it Transfer Tuesday.

Plagiarism update: Last week I noticed that Cheriehoop, a moderator from the Syracusefan.com board, had lifted the Transfer Tuesday list I had compiled from May 21, verbatim, and posted it there on May 25 without giving me credit. (Stolen Saturday?) I'm not registered over there, but on this board I asked for attribution and a link to DBR.

Since then, Cheriehoop updated that post and also posted my May 28 list the following day (Whole-Enchilada Wednesday?), both with the note:

Thanks to Duke’s "brevity" for this weekly list.

It's at least something, but later that day, DBR moderator -jk was kind enough to register on the Syracuse board to make a post that provided them with more details:

That's thanks to brevity from the Duke Basketball Report (DBR, over here). Y'all are welcome to drop by and join the discussion!

While I agree that their backcourt (and potentially up to their wings) looks scary, it doesn't always work the way you'd intuitively think. Meaning, improvement isn't always given year to year, especially with significant roster changes.

Without the frontcourt that UNC had last year, you can envision scenarios where the backcourt of UNC is neutralized as teams can devote substantial excess resources to stopping it. Same concept if their rebounding suffers without Bacot/Ingram.

I wouldn't bet on that happening, but it's definitely possible that RJ takes a small step back (or plateaus) and/or Cadeau doesn't jump as much as you'd normally expect and/or Jackson doesn't flourish as a freshman (although that's probably table stakes for UNC).

I forgot Lubin. I think he could really help them. Good rebounder at the 4?

The two freshmen are #7 Jackson who will likely start at the 3 and #11 (I think) wing Powell who will likely come off the bench.

They may have a top5 backcourt but a top100 frontcourt. Proctor and Foster and James all have the length and athleticism to really bother RJ and Cadeau. I think our perimeter defense will be a step up from last season.

Maybe a top15 team. But unless Washington outperforms at center, they could also drop to a top30 team.

I think the frontcourt with Lubin is top 33 or so

RJ Davis is scary. I'll reserve judgement on Cad'oh until I see if he can hit a shot. He was 10-53 (18.9%) from three last year and was taken off the court in the second half of their final game because he was such a liability. For comparison, freshman Tre Jones was 27-103 (26.2%), Trevon Duvall was 31-107 (29.0%), and sophomore Mark Mitchell was 11-40 (27.5%). All of them were considered terrible shooters. Cad'oh can distribute and occasionally get to the rim, but he's small and defenders can play off of him. As for Ian Jackson, he's talented but needs the ball in his hands as do the other two guards, and when was the last time a freshman actually made an impact at UNC?

I learned my lesson last year about writing off the CHeats too early, but I see them as a top-20 team. No idea how CBS has them in the top 5.

I have full confidence that if Proctor is healthy, he can give Davis fits, again. Plus without having to worry about a road grader setting picks with abandon (i.e. Bacot), Davis' options will be reduced.

I'm kind of looking forward to see how the Cheaters manage to put together a top 20 team without an inside game or a second high level option on offense. Last year they had 3 and a 4th when Ryan was going off.

Some guys make major improvements in a single offseason. Tre Jones went from 26% to 36% in year 2. Wendell Moore went from 30% in year 2 to 41% in year 3. Flip went from 28% to 35% in year 2. If Cadeau and/or Trimble can learn to shoot, that would be huge. I will say their numbers from midrange and the FT line don't inspire a lot of confidence.

For all the talk of replacing Bacot, I think Ingram leaves a huge hole as well. He was the connector piece for them, able to play the 4 and with strength to deal with bigger players. His shooting really stretched the floor, so that their spacing wasn't terrible even when teams sagged off of Cadeau/Trimble. I'm not sure if there's a like for like replacement on the roster. Option 1 is using Tyson, who has the shooting, but not the athleticism or the defense. Option 2 is using Lubin/Withers at the 4, but that could give them spacing issues on offense. And if they play Tyson at the 3, defense could be a problem. Ingram's flexibility solved so many tactical issues for them last year. I think Hubert will eventually settle on a small ball approach, since his talent is so heavily slanted towards perimeter players.

One thing UNC seems to always excel at is rebounding. Between Bacot and Ingram, they lost 19 rpg from last season. And their only frontcourt addition, Lubin, is a 6-8 guy who averaged 6rpg in 28mpg last season.

They are really dependent on up and down Withers and two-knee-surgeries Washington to make big jumps in minutes and contributions. Might work out but also seems like they could be very very soft inside with defense and rebounding.

Hubert will also need big contributions from his star freshmen. We know firsthand how those guys can struggle, especially early in the year and especially on defense.

I predict there will be a lot of post game meltdowns on the IC board this season.

Oh, they have a top-5 backcourt! Argh, their shooters can improve! OMG, they are going to get the best big from the portal! Okay, well, that last part didn't happen. Let me put all your minds at ease. UNC will suck because that's who they are, and that's what they do. Whether or not they are any good at basketball remains to be seen, but rest assured, they will suck.

I deserve some of this heckle as I am the one with predictions on their backcourt etc. Now, we KNOW RJ is a killer. Probably best 2 guard in ACC if not the nation. You had to hope he was a little off if you had a chance at winning last yr. EC is a great distributor and that was with people sagging off which makes it easier to intercept his passes etc. The dude can run a team. He SHOULD improve at shooting. Most guys do. I mean they will have him taking a bazillion 3s this year in the summer and I would be surprised if he didn't bump up 7%+ in his three shooting this year. But if he is still less than 30% that's fine. And he probably will be. Still, EC and RJ are STRONG. Trimble is a good defender who I wish hadn't returned... And he may become a good three shooter as has shown that ability. They have a lot of options - Jackson, Tyson, Powell. Some possible D lacking with Tyson but a lot of mix and match.

I agree the frontcourt doesn't look anywhere like an Ingram and Bacot level :D - I just remember a FF game and them sweeping us last year... so until we beat them I am hesitant to get all giddy.. Plus we still are a little too freshman-reliant for my liking. Wish there was one more BRUISER inside. Hope Brown can really help there

Proctor was effective in slowing down RJ last year. Ingram and Ryan each had career games to beat us. And Bacot has always given us fits in his 10 years on the team. I like our chances to sweep this year. We have a lot more top end talent and will be taller and equally or more athletic at every position except maybe Gillis or another wing guarding Jackson.

They outperformed expectations last year, and could again, but I think we've got a much better roster from 1-8.

Oh My Goodness!!!! More common ground. :D

A while back in this thread, I said that there's no one more dangerous with an open scholarship than Bill Self.

Earlier today it was reported that 6-3 rising sophomore point guard Elmarko Jackson tore his left patellar tendon and will be out for 12 months. Bad news, certainly, but just now we've learned that Self has received a commitment from the transfer portal: 6-1 senior point guard Shakeel Moore, who was a freshman at NC State and spent the last 3 seasons at Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-1 senior originally from Greensboro, NC averaged 7.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game this season. He also shot 46.8% from the field and 36.3% from three.

The insanely fast and accurate Andrew Parrish has already updated his 2024-2025 Scholarship Tracker to reflect these changes at Kansas. The Jayhawks are now at 13 scholarships, but Jackson and Noah Shelby (a 6-3 sophomore guard who transferred in from Rice) are both being listed as sitting out next season, so Self might not be done yet. You never know with him.

I try to be objective. Withers did impress me at Louisville. Before h e transferred. He has the talent. Washington? Not sure. I feel good about them if they have to lean on Washington. However Lubin looked good in last part of season as he averaged a 14 7 reb in last 15 games all vs SEC. that’s pretty much exactly what Ingram brought if we give a 2 rebound bump. He could really be a help. 14 7 in SEC? Strong. Now if he being at unc helped prevent them getting a 5 then I’ll take it
