Thank you, Captain: Jeremy Roach transfers to Baylor

On3: Scott Drew on adding Duke transfer Jeremy Roach: 'Seemed like a perfect fit for us'

Drew had high praise for Roach during a recent press conference last week. He joked that the Bears realized that they needed him for themselves after he played well against them in a Top-25 matchup last season...

Roach went for 18 points (5-9 FG), three rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals in the 78-70 win for No. 21 Duke over No. 10 Baylor in NYC. He helped the Blue Devils to close it, including the final two free-throws to seal the eight-point victory in mid-December.

That wasn’t all that sold Drew and the Bears on Roach, though. The remarks and endorsement of his former program also showed them that he was going to be great for Baylor.

Field of 68's Jeff Goodman interviews Jeremy Roach...the link here is a placeholder for tomorrow at 9AM but they are running promos on social media with the following quotes:

"I wanted to stay but stuff didn't meet up and it was just my time to go"

"I want to let the whole world know right now, I am not a 2, I am not a 3, I am not a scoring guard, I am a point guard. Cut all the 2 stuff, that's just what I had to do at Duke. I am a point guard and it's great to get back to what I do."

Wish him the best of luck but am skeptical he can be a true PG - happy to be wrong…

This fits with what little we know about the process (i.e. from Jason and Donald's sources that they've alluded to on the pod). I imagine that this will get skewed in the Twitter-verse to reignite the "Scheyer forced guys out!" nonsense, but personally I think this is exactly how this type of decision is supposed to work. If Jeremy decided the best way to prepare for his basketball-playing future (even if it isn't in the NBA) is to improve and showcase his PG skills, I'd much rather Scheyer be honest with him and say, "Well, we have Tyrese and Caleb on the roster next year who fit what we need in a PG a bit better, so I can't promise you those minutes" than sell him a bill of goods only to have him disgruntled during the season (which I have to imagine is happening all over the country). As much whiplash as it might give us, I think everything about this was the "right" way to go about things in the modern basketball landscape.

Same here. I think he had enough reps at Duke to show that while he has a quick first step and can penetrate well, he lacks the vision and anticipation to create for others at a starting PG level. Bully for Jeremy if he proves me wrong this year though.
yep. this where I'm at.

Yeah Jeremy had tunnel vision on his drives. He’s a pretty good driver, ball handler and defender but Proctor has much better vision.

Four years at the college level is a big enough sample size to say he has proven to be far more effective playing off the ball. What he means is that he WANTS to be a point guard because to be blunt about it, he's too short to be anything else at the next level. I wish him the best but don't blame him for going somewhere he'll have a chance to prove himself at the point.

I’d love to see him blossom as a PG - he has a deceptive ability to get by people. If he could improve his passing and vision on drives it would go a long way toward giving him a shot at a pro career. He’ll get every chance to showcase that at Baylor. Hopefully it works out well for him. It’ll be weird seeing him in a different jersey, but JR is Duke royalty and always will be.

The actual interview, available at the original link a bit upthread, is only 5 minutes long and worth watching. Other stuff not included in the original teaser clip:

-"I sacrificed a whole lot those 4 years"
-He's still in contact with all the Duke coaches and it's "all love"
-Being the PG is back to "that old PVI feeling"
-"I am getting back to myself"
-VJ Edgecomb is the most athletic freshman he has ever been around, by far, and he's all about the team
-He thinks Baylor is the best team in the country, or at least has the best backcourt

How much can you develop court vision and awareness? And the passing ability that comes along with it? Seems like JR will get his chance to show it at BU this season. Hope it works out for him. Agreed it was the best outcome for JR and Duke...

yeah...after 4 years, i feel like he's a known entity.

He's definitely improved, but there's a reason my friends and I have the term "roach ball" in our lexicon.

Agree with the consensus above regarding Jeremy's PG and playmaking skills. He's just not much of a passer/creator even when he's tasked with being the primary ballhandler. He seems to have reached his ceiling the past couple seasons at Duke. I don't think he's got more capacity as a scorer and he hasn't shown greater skill as a facilitator.

Over four seasons at Duke, Jeremy's Usage % in chronological order was 17.9 / 17.3 / 23.6 / 20.7 while his Assist % was 16.9 / 16.9 / 18.7 / 18.0. Those first two years stand out to me because his usage was basically the same and he wasn't asked to score as much, yet his Ast% was exactly the same whether he was playing for Duke's worst team in a quarter century or with Paolo & Co.

He's always seemed like basically the same player throughout his career and very much like a "he is who he is" guy at this point.

2 short form thoughts on Jeremy

1. Thank you Jeremy! Your FF run was a beautiful thing to watch. He always played hard and lead Duke with class.

2. Now the truthful part: if Duke really wanted Jeremy, he would still be here. But let’s read between the lines here.
Both of these points appear to have been accurate.

Love Jeremy. Big shot maker. Two time captain. Hanger of 3 banners. Great Blue Devil. I wish we had him for one more year, but I get it.

I agree with those who say he just isn't a natural point guard. Can he become one in a different system? We'll see. I can understand why he wants to give it a go, and that he sees that his pro career depends on it.

I think the old school pass-first PG is becoming a thing of the past, at least at Duke. In the last 20 seasons, a Duke player has averaged 6 assists just once: Tre Jones in 19-20.
