Summer Lax News and Notes 2024

Burns, I think you're right. Dino coached Unterstein for 2 years at Hofstra. With his PLL experience and ties with Tierney, it feels like that's the way it could go.

Duke incoming freshman attackman Liam Kershis won MVP honors at last night’s All-American game, going for two and four to lead the North to a 16-15 win.

Duke women picked at number 22 in USLacrosse Magazine’s wat-too-early top 25.

Given the amount of scoring that has to be replaced, I wouldn’t argue too strenuously if you said that seemed a little optimistic.

Confirmed by Ty Xanders of Prep Lacrosse....for every Balsalmo there's a Pedicano.

This is big, for a couple of reasons. First, this kid can play, and at a position of need. Second, after not recruiting effectively in New Jersey for a number of years, Duke cleaned up in the 2025 class with Pedicano joining Drago and Scioletti. The 2026 group doesn’t appear as deep, but there is real quality at the top with Summit GK Robbie Kiewit and Don Bosco MF John Devir.

USA U-20 women are off to a rampaging start at the world championship, winning their first two games by a combined 61-4. Duk’s Caitlin Barrett had four goals in the 33-0 win over Germany, and added one in the 28-4 win over Puerto Rico.

Another four-goal effort from Caitlin Barrett as the USA U-20 women cruised to a 31-6 quarterfinal win over Puerto Rico.

USA faces Australia in the semis at 4:00 a.m. Eastern on Thursday.

Ridiculously way too early rankings by the guys at USA Lacrosse magazine but a decent recap of who departed and the additions via the transfer portal.

The have us ranked 7th, 4th in the ACC behind Notre Dame, Syracuse, and Virginia.

Barrett with a hat trick, plus an assist and four DCs, in USA U-20 women’s semifinal win over Australia.

USA faces Canada for gold at 6:30 a.m. Eastern on Saturday.

Barrett and the USA U-20 women claim gold with a lopsided win over Canada in the final. BC’s Emma LoPinto is your tournament MVP.

Barrett didn’t get on the scoresheet in the final, but contributed two DC, two GBs, and a CT. Given Duke’s graduation losses in midfield, she and Goodwin will be looked to to step up in a big way.

Congrats, Caitlyn!

Brennan goes to Philly with the first pick in the NLL draft, making it two years in a row for Duke (Dyson was the first pick in last year’s draft).

Congrats to Duke alum Tyler Carpenter, named LSM of the year in the PLL (in his rookie season).
JT Giles Harris earned the PLL Sportsmanship Award and Mike Pressler named Coach of the Year.

More good news, per IL:
“Duke had one of the biggest single days of the commitment cycle, locking up No. 2 overall midfielder James Gillis as the first of four commitments announced on Monday.

In addition to Gillis, Duke landed 5-Star and No. 5 overall Bennett Matthews (Bedford, N.H. / Tomahawks), plus [5-star and] No. 11 overall Tedy Frisoli (St. Sebastian’s, Mass. / Laxachusetts).”
The New England takeover of Duke sports continues...
I wonder what Dano is telling the kids with regard to how much longer he is coaching...
