Strategy Discussions: rotations, play calling, roster management, and more

Somebody pointed out to me that Cooper was even better than 2-5 from 3 last night because his toe-on-the-line shot would have made him 3-6.

His shot looked different. Slower. Less elevation on his jump.

Is it possible that Cooper first put in the work on limiting his turnovers (done) and is now focused on upping his shooting efficiency? If it plays out that way, the kid is truly a savant and it has to make you wonder just how high his ceiling could be.

It is only one game. Let's see what happens...
KInda like Larry Bird?

I'll add a third which is in each of the past two years, Jon noticeably unveiled new sets and actions in January.

But I'm not expecting to see new sets with Khaman or Brown posting for the same reasons you don't see the Mavs run sets with Lively posting. I do think we will see sets with Cooper posting (maybe a sample last night?) and possibly Kon posting.

Maybe we will see a "pick and pop" option with Maluach shooting some threes at the top of the key? He's shooting 80% on his foul shots. If he could hit 35% of those, it would REALLY open up the lane for Cooper and Kon and the guards to attack the rim.
I have been wondering if they would start running sets with Brown posting since he is such a good passer. He was hitting Sion on cuts to the basket early in the season, I think.

They might prefer to do that with Flagg, but I think defenses are geared toward keeping him from getting the ball inside in the first place.

Brown is a great passer for sure. The modern offense is to pull the big away from the basket to open up scoring opportunities.

I may be wrong but I expect we will see Brown making passes from the top of the key and not on the low block. Khaman is a good passer too.

It will be interesting to see what Jon adds. He has lots of options. When I watch our offense, I see the Mavs and the Celtics - not so much Coach K teams. I expect he will add sets from their playbooks.

I wish that Flagg had a softer touch on his layups and shots around the net - a la Zion. He seems to give a little push as h lets the ball go.
This. The number of short shots that he misses because he shoots the ball too hard is sad. If he softened up the shots around the rim, he would be completely amazing.

I've updated the player stats from 3 weeks ago. Some quick observations:
  • Biggest improvers are Cooper, Kon, Evans and Tyrese, while biggest decliners are Caleb and Mason.
  • Comparing total impact to impact just from stats, Mason, Evans, and Brown add the most "hidden" value.
  • Defense has fallen off due largely to Maliq, Evans, and Foster, while Khaman has stepped up.
  • Caleb is approaching unplayable, would like to see Mason and Evans get those minutes.
  • Our top 5 "chemistry" pairs are Kon-Evans, Kon-Mason, Sion-Evans, Cooper-Evans, and Cooper-Sion.

In fairness, you are comparing Flagg to the player with the best interior touch I've ever seen in college basketball, bar none. Everybody would love to have that kind of touch, but literally nobody does.
Flagg's shooting appears to be improving across the board. Up to 76% FT now. I know it's not this simple, but from the outside it looks like he's taken three big steps in succession to elevate his game.

First, clean up the bad early season turnovers. Second, reduce the poor mid range shot selection. Third, make every shot count. Let's hope it continues!

Wow, 76% from 3- that’s almost Plumlee territory😜

I am not comparing him to Zion, I am wishing he had a softer touch with his layups and used Zion as an example. While he will never have the unbelievable touch that Zion has, he can improve the softness with which he lays the ball on the Board.

Zion uses the glass frequently, out to 10 ft or so. I've noticed that Cooper rarely does. He should try and work that into his repertoire as he matures.

Flagg seems to shoot threes much better from straight on, rather than from the corners. His improvement may be partly due to better shot selection on threes.

I saw reference to Auburn's young offensive coordinator and the "zoom actions" they like to run. That took me down a bit of a rabbit hole learning about the different 5-out actions like zoom, drag screens, stagger screens, give and get, ...

For those interested in this stuff, I found a good link with short descriptions, diagrams, video clips. And, yes, Duke is pretty much running all this stuff. These are the actions behind a modern offense.

Interesting article by Will Warren on the increase in the number of three point shots:

"Delaware State, who as of the time of writing had attempted far more catch-and-shoot (i.e., intentionally designed) two-point jumpers (85) than the last nine seasons of Nate Oats-coached teams combined (78)."

Most of the article is behind a paywall, but the beginning info about how teams are shooting so many threes is worth your time.

I’m not disagreeing but Elton Brand is on the short list of players I would consider in that rarified air…
