Scrimmage Video (June 2024)

On a Tulane team with the #105 best offense according to T-rank, Sion was a low usage player offensively --17%. I really hope he isn't a primary offensive option for Duke.
Could be true, then again maybe their offense sucked because they didn't use Sion enough! Me, I have no friggin clue about any of this, just really intrigued by how Jon puts together all of these very different pieces...biggest question for me is can he actually keep people happy by, to some extent, extending our usually short rotation. I'm guessing maybe he can. A clear, definite maybe!

I mean, semi-seriously, your and other posts above would preclude a role for a 19-YO Luka Doncic, given the similar size and athleticism with Kon. I think speculation is fine, but as they say, there's a difference between certitude and certainty.
I think comping an incoming freshman to one of the top-10 players on the planet does a tremendous disservice to the freshman. At the age K2 is now, Luka had been playing against men for 2 years with Real Madrid, not boys in Wisconsin, so no a 19-YO Luka would not have been precluded.

If you want to ignore that K2 faced the weakest competition of any player on Duke's roster and has athleticism concerns when evaluating him, knock yourself out. TJ was not as skilled as K2 but he was skilled and more athletic than K2. TJ couldn't see the floor with Mark Mitchell in front of him. K2 has Cooper, Sion, Mason, Caleb, and Evans looking for the same minutes.

I do think K2 will be a great player for Duke, I would just be surprised if it is this season.

I really hope Jon utilizes a deeper rotation this season. There is a lot of talent on this roster.

WRT Sion's usage, I don't think it is a happy coincidence that all 3 transfers were low usage players at their prior stops. I am guessing Jon targeted players who have shown they can positively impact the game without the ball in their hands. I am not expecting their usage to increase at Duke.

In his defense, K2 led Nike EYBL in scoring, shooting nearly 48% on 3s.

Also, K2 is starting to show up in multiple mock drafts ahead of his competition for wing minutes. That's not random. The hype is building for this kid. Feels a lot like Jared McCain's rise in the rankings and development coming into Duke...

It was a crime that he didn't make the McDonald's game. Kon is a top 10 player in his class. He is mocked ahead of several guys that the industry ranked ahead of him. Kon is a legitimate NBA guy in 2 years and I think we get him for 2 yrs. I love everything about his game but he would have to play 25+ minutes to go top 20ish in what will be a much deeper draft and we are too deep for that I think. I think he plays 18-20 min/gm and is a pre season All American going into '25.

In November of 2022, Givony was saying that Tyrese was Duke's best player and biggest surprise. This time last year Tyrese was consistently mocked as a lottery pick.

I agree it's not random. The term you are looking for is WAG.

Cooper Flagg lacking confidence. 😂 college basketball fans will love him or hate him. But they can't ignore him.

Love me some Cooper Flag...on Offense! I watched the scrimmage, but didn't break it down in the film room to help the guys prepare for the next scrimmage. :)

I saw Cooper go to the hoop with quickness, creativity and finish. Electrifying scorer who will get buckets. And he passes with L Bird brilliance.

But, I THINK I saw him getting beat on D multiple times. Like he didn't even move his feet. I would appreciate others who saw the scrimmage to give their views, including telling me that I didn't see what I think I saw. Thanks!

I saw flashes of a quick first step and the strength to finish inside, especially early in the year and in his outburst against Michigan St. 21 points, right?

When Proctor got hurt, Jon definitely asked him just to run the offense and not create offense. I think that was very intentional.

We will see what he offers this year and how much rope Jon gives him to run some PNR sets - most all of those were for Proctor and Roach last year. Hopefully he has a nice frosh to soph jump.
Same here. I too saw Foster with a great first step and handle, but was so often behind McCain and limited PT. His shot is a high lifter with great mechanics. I think he had to defer a bit being a freshmen with two good guards ahead. He hasn’t had much of chance to get on a heater and in high school he was a scoring machine. With the talent we have on the wings and inside, Foster and Proctor are going to be surgeons — they can pass well out of the pick and roll. Procter has the best step back — and turn and shoot in the lane. Foster has a better cross over to the basket. Basically our guards are going to be an embarrassment of riches this year. Foster has a ton more confidence and those two will push each other — but the space they’ll get when defenses have to handle our bigs is going to increase their scoring opportunities. This team is going to be unbelievable.

I'm in your camp. I've seen too many predictions in the past based on pre-season videos that didn't come true. Power being the most recent. I think Foster is going to be a terrific player this season at the 2 guard with some minutes backing up Proctor at the point. I think it's possible K2 might get minutes there as well. However, it's too soon to make that assumption. I know Flagg has the potential to be a very special player, but I want to see him in action before I anoint him POY. I'm anxious to see is how Coach Scheyer distributes minutes to the freshmen not named Flagg and do we play at a faster tempo this season.

GoDuke!
This team is 2018 but with better outside shooting so teams won’t be able to compress in the lane on Zion. Just saying. Buckle up for an incredible season.
