Scrimmage Video (June 2024)

I kept wondering where Harris was, thinking he was the new TJ Power, but it turns out he broke his hand.

This statement probably needs a little elaboration. (Between Harris' hand, this scrimmage video, and the new DBR podcast with Jay Bilas talking about Kyle Filipowski and the NBA Draft, Friday was an eventful day to not have this board.)

On3: Duke announces Darren Harris had surgery for fracture in non-shooting hand, on track for full recovery

"The fracture was on Harris’ non-shooting hand. The announcement did not include a timeline for his rehab and recovery, though the injury is not likely to cost him any games in the upcoming season."

Wow. I can't tell who should be in the rotation. I thought James's blocks and drives show he is a man who can play at this level. 2K showed surprising athleticism, not what I expected. And Flagg is Flagg but I don't think he'll be blocking a lot of shots at this level.

Attention all passengers on the Sion James train, this is your captain speaking. We are bound to see more folks boarding in the coming hours thanks to about 4 or 5 blocked shots by Sion in the above video as well as several nifty finishes at the rim despite having Flagg and others all over him. Please make room for the new passengers and welcome them with open arms.

I never want to read anything into a bad showing in these scrimmage videos, but I do think you can take something away from good showings.

Kon has that mature shooter-playmaker look to his game. A lot like McCain coming in last year... If he can play defense, he might be the dark horse 5th starter.

James and Foster both look very athletic getting to the rim. Proctor doing the Proctor thing.

We know this will be a great defensive team, but I think this 3-man backcourt (maybe 4-man with Kon's guard skills) has the potential to surprise everyone and be one of the top backcourts in the country. Length, athleticism, experience, shooting, defense, valuing the ball. They check all the boxes.

He got my attention when he blocked a dunk try by Khaman.

OTOH, he handles the ball more like an off guard than a shooting guard. SSS, of course.

He looks really good! I've always been on the James starters-minutes train. 20-25mpg in a backup role. But I've said he's unlikely to be our 5th starter because we need his minutes at the 2 guard knowing Foster would slide over to PG for 10mpg.

What could allow him to slot in as our 5th starter could actually be Kon's guard skills. Kon looked very comfortable driving the ball and making plays so maybe he could eat up some of those Foster backup minutes.

Also possible James starts ahead of Foster, but I think that's unlikely for multiple reasons. Foster also looking great in the video.

Thank you Conductor, here are my tickets. I upgraded to a first class cabin.

Honestly, that video looked like Sion was saying, “You’re not going to start me? Really? I double dog dare you to find someone better.”

It is kinda cool to see your shooting guard stuffing the 7’2” center at the rim.

Flagg is going to block a lot of shots.

Anyone have an idea how long this scrimmage was? If these highlights are from a 1/2 hour or a 3 hour scrimmage it may be more or less meaningful.

Are you implying the video was EDITED!?!?!?

When the players walked out, everyone said Maliq Brown was the best defender because he had a ton of deflections… I don’t think we saw a single one in that video.

I’m just hoping Flagg’s perimeter shooting looks that good in real games (and that those three makes were not out of 30 shots). He becomes a 20+ PPG guy when you add a reliable jump shot…

I’ve seen him a few times at the Peach Jam — Cooper can definitely swoosh it from deep. At least against that level of play (elite high school).

Really like what I see from Sion James. He brings an athleticism and physicality that we really needed in the backcourt. Foster and Proctor are big guards, but have a tendency to settle for jump shots. While I think/hope they can get better at attacking the rim, Sion needs no instruction in that regard. He took more shots at the rim (133) than those two combined last year (108). It also looks like that athleticism can be weaponized on defense. Sion put up really good efficiency numbers while playing 37 mpg on a bad team last year. It's hard not to get excited about what he can do in ~20 mpg with much better teammates around him.

The halfback body build on Sion James is definitely a plus when trying to finish at the rim. Duke hasn’t had that feature since Zion.

I’m sure highlight videos are just that. These tend to show just the shots that worked. But, for a group of guys that just came together, it’s definitely 4 months’ of optimistic outlook.

I am absolutely SHOCKED that the announcement did not include a timeline for recovery! We always get precise timelines on injuries and recoveries, right? (the fact they revealed it was his hand is even more shocking, not just an "upper body" malaise.)
